Air rifle power?
Hello everyone. This is my first post in this forum so I hope you dont flame me for it. Why do many here want to hot rod an air rifle? I have enjoyed air rifles for 35 years or so and I just dont see the point. My reason for enjoying them is because they are quiet, (some more than others) relatively safe, no real long range distance threat or while shooting up in the air at birds and varmits. The diabolo pellet design slows rapidly and is soft to resist ricochet. They are also not accurate at speeds near the sound barrier so why do so many try to make a .22LR out of them? If I need more power or longer range I reach for my .17 HMR. Way more accurate out to 150 yards and more FPE with a 17 grain bullet. I know to each his own but why try to reinvent the wheel. If you want .22 power and the hazards that come with it pick up a .22.

Also I just cant wait for your patent pending air rifles, really I am just so excited, Ive never heard of a guy coming on tag and saying he made a air rifle, ever.

Also my ass your 22 produces less noise, and guess what you had to get a tax stamp to even get your “22” to be at the noise level it is.
Lastly, a out of the box 22 would def not beat half these guys airguns, including mine, so if you want to fly me out there, I will show up with a quiter gun, beat your accuracy take your money and leave.

LOL guys. You crack me up. I too love air guns. They are my first love before I was old enough to own PB’s. Ted’s videos re kindled my love for air guns and shooting. Just to let you know I am a machinist and I have competed in many PB benchrest events. I do my own machine work as in barreling and chambering my PB rifles. My .22 does have a silencer and yes the noise is less than any of your airguns. If anyone doubts me just show up with your money and gun to prove me wrong. With all that being said I have two new air rifle designs I plan to produce for sale this year. As soon as we get the patent pending I can tell you more about them. This thread was to just test the water out there and I am glad to see how defensive airgun owners are.

Ok maybe not the best example.
People will go 1 or 2 way’s when UN-educated and usually it’s the un-educated route because you already know more than most, it’s just the wrong stuff 💡 … Most of my cousins went that route.
I really enjoy TAG,It’s my time with the boy’s,kinda and I don’t have to be but a foot away from my girls.

That life made me the husband and father i am today and I would not change it. My daughter will have a better understanding of life because of it and we get to shoot AIR GUN’S every single day.

Exactly, they are not fire arms and they don’t fall under same laws. I would like to see a .22 rim fire that can make 160+ fpe and be as quiet as my .25 condor. I shoot it in my garage with the door open.
Then there is the .308 that makes 290fpe and is also quiet and will shoot 300 yards.

The real reasons we hot rod anything is either need or for enjoyment. I could go buy a .17 HMR this afternoon if I felt like it but it’s not my thing. Doing the most I can with airguns is a hobby and I enjoy it. There’s your reasons.
That said, the .22 WMR and the .17 HMR are good cartridges but not all that and a bag of chips either. Yeah, they shoot flat compared to airguns but they drop power fast as Hell.
Here’s a quote from Chuck Hawkes, gun reviewer of decent repute I’m told…
“I know of no other rimfire hunting cartridge as accurate as the .17 HMR. We have consistently shot 1″ or smaller 3-shot groups at 100 yards (sometimes much smaller) with off the shelf .17 HMR varmint rifles and ammunition loaded with Hornady 17 grain V-Max bullets. I’m talking about an average group size of less than 1 MOA. I find that to be extraordinary.
I have also owned and used enough .22 WMR rifles to know that they will seldom match that level of performance. I used to have a rather accurate Mossberg bolt action varmint rifle that would consistently shoot into about 1.5″ at 100 yards if I did my part. That is as accurate as any .22 WMR rifle I have ever tested.”
Looks like the .17 is an exceptional round. Hard to believe any airgun might shoot consistent 1″ 3 shot groups at 100 yards!
OK, maybe high power airguns can do OK in accuracy but the power at 100 yards plus is probably nothing like a .17 magnum…
Again from Chuck Hawkes:
“.17 HMR, 17 grain V-Max = ME 245 ft. lbs., 185 ft. lbs. at 50 yards, 136 ft. lbs. at 100 yards, 99 ft. lbs. at 150 yards, 72 ft. lbs. at 200 yards.
.17 HMR, 20 grain XTP = ME 250 ft. lbs., 187 ft. lbs. at 50 yards, 137 ft. lbs. at 100 yards, 99 ft. lbs. at 150 yards, 72 ft. lbs. at 200 yards.”
Using the pessimistic (for solid non-diablo pellets) values in Chairgun, I ran a few figures. My 177gr slug has a ME of 244.9 fpe, at 50 yards it has 203 fpe, at 100 yards it has 168 fpe at 150 yards it has 139 fpe and at 200 yards it has 115 fpe remaining.
The lightest slug I use with my .32 is the Bishop. Shooting that at 960 fps I still have 45 fpe at 200 yards and that is plenty for small targets like ground hogs. Here’s proof:
Yeah, hitting things with a flat shooting PB is a lot easier but easy is for work not hobbies and enthusiasts.
The stuff above is not Condor stuff but plenty of guys hot rod their Condors to bigger calibers and higher power levels. The guys here shooting heavy slugs in .25 get some great results too. It’s fun to shoot with air, anyone can do it with powder!

I have to respectfully disagree with your comment that a subsonic .22 will do what one of these guns will do more quietly. With more power? Sure. At longer distances? Probably. But more quietly? Never. I have a Talon SS with an 18 inch barrel and a Talon Tunes shroud, which dampens the sound to almost nothing. When I shoot it, you hear the ping of the hammer hitting the valve, and the thump of the pellet on the target. Period. I’ve never heard any .22lr, even subsonics, that were that that quiet unless they had a silencer on them.
Now, why shoot one of these, instead of a .22? A few reasons. One, because it is so quiet, I can shoot it from my house without going deaf or needing a silencer. This goes along with my second reason, which is that it allows me to quietly dispose of pests in my backyard (house sparrows, starlings, crows and squirrels) without alerting my neighbors to the fact that anything is going on. Third, they are plenty accurate for what I need them to do. My Benjamin 397 with a Williams peep on it allows me to pop paintballs up to 20 yards away. If I need to go further than that, my SS will group 5 shots under a dime at 50 yards, which allows me to reach a good distance into the greenbelt behind my house. I have killed starlings at least 50 yards out with this gun, and that was when it still had it’s 12 inch barrel on it. Finally, because it’s lower powered and quieter than a .22lr, I get in a lot of shooting practice in my backyard without having to make a special trip to the range. I get in a lot of trigger time with my airguns, which pays off when it’s time to put the crosshairs on an animal, whether I am using one of my airguns or a powder burner.

Luv4pits, Sorry to hear your story but any man in your shoes should have the right to defend himself. Your reply is the only legit answer so far. A $100.00 .22LR and some Aguila SSS 60 grainers will do anything a hot rodded condor will do and do it quieter. I know I have one and its the most accurate .22 pb I have ever shot. I just cant shoot it in the backyard or up in the air for fear of killing someone. Dont get me wrong I love and own high velocity PB’s like the 22 swift, .17 remington, 25-06, 7mm-mag but they have their place and use.
If you have to ask the question, you won’t understand the answer…..
I’m sure mine is a bit more of a rare case. I hope…

at 15 I Broke another kid’s jaw. Mutual combat. He acctually started the fight. Tried as an adult, (had a public pretender) I was poor his family wasen’t. I got tried as an adult. 3 felonys and 3years and 8months out of my life.
So seventeen years later, I’m somwhat Educated. I built my first home at 20 and the second one at 26 I live here now. my wife of 12 years in july, is an oncology nurse and we home school our daughter. Broke the circle thank god.
So this is my only option. I can nerver own a PB and that also take’s my wife’s right’s away also.
really bums me out. Thank god for air rifles.. I think I would still love them just as much if i had pb’s too 😉

well… more power = more things you can humainly kill, and trust me with an add on shroud these are quieter than anything on the market out of the box.
I think we all enjoy the challenge of over coming the down falls of air, and 99% of us around here are the type of people that just cant leave anything alone… everything can be made better 😉
.. your right.. too fast and you loose accuracy… thats why we are forever on the quest for heavy and accurate..
