EF I’m thinking I may buy another SWFA. This time in 10x. I’m really loving the MQ reticle. Here’s a picture of the SWFA 20x reticle which is similar to the other scopes in the Classic series ($299.00):

The brand has been highly rated as punching above it’s weight, and I’ve enjoyed having the 16x on the Eddy. It doesn’t look too bad on the Short either, if slightly large. I want something smaller so maybe the SWFA will be too big after all. The gun will primarily be a short-range shooter. Anyway,:

Thanks EF (Hutton? “when EF talks, people listen!” ).btw, I measured the o.d of my barrel and it’s 15.26mm, iirc, but definitely larger than 15 mm by a good bit. more later.

Mine’s a tad over 15mm OD like 15.1x or something but I just chalk that up to my el cheapo $20 caliper. Unless you have a $100+ caliper that’s been calibrated those margin of errors are within reason.

btw these guns shoot terrible if the scope rail/ frame isn’t tight. I’ll try to get mine across the chronograph soon. I like the HST adjuster. Really smooth. But it cries out for those pins to be installed in a simple tool like a screwdriver hand or something similar. I’d hate to lose those pins in my shag carpet!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a lightweight scope for the Shorty? I think anything between 7x and 10x would suit my needs.

Vortex Viper 2.5-10×32 It is not cheap

:dito: :dito:

I’ve own the Vortex these guys are raving about. It’s a nice compact FFP scope with good glass within it’s price range. Like they said, it’s somewhat pricey relative to what others typically spend for an airgun scope given the street price of around $700. That’s priced similar to the SWFA HD scopes. I’ve never owned an SWFA so I can’t comment on them.

That said, I sold my Vortex Viper. It’s not that I was unhappy with it. I just felt I needed more magnification. At 10x, you can still see a sparrow at 100 yds clearly with the Vortex. I just prefer more magnification so I stumbled upon the Athlon Talos BTR 4-14×44 FFP scope. Length wise it’s approximately the same as I measured my Talos to be just under 13″ with the weight of a tad under 24oz. The Vortex is pretty damn light but with the added weight of the Talos, you get more magnification and it parallax down to 10 yds even at 14x. With the Vortex I couldn’t do that. I got it parallax free down to around 15 yds at the lower end of the magnification. Plus I like the xmas tree reticle on the Talos much more than the Vortex. It gives you hold over points with windage as I don’t think many dial much for airgun use. The turrets on the Vortex is better than the Talos. Clicks are more audible and have a better feel. The Vortex also has a shimmed zero stop and the Talos doesn’t. To some that matters more than to others. I didn’t own the Vortex and Talos at the same exact time so I can’t compare glass side by side. Based on my recollection, if I had to assess the glass quality, I think they are comparable. I wouldn’t be surprise if the Vortex was a tad better but again, the max mag was only 10x. On the Talos right now, at 14x the image is still really good.

For the money, I value the Talos BTR higher. That’s because it offers almost the same features at less than half the cost (street price below $300) with a better reticle and more magnification. To me, it’s a good compact bullpup scope with the right magnification range for my needs. We all dream of that compact 15x or 20x FFP scope that’s under 20oz and parallax down to 10 yds but until that becomes a reality that’s affordable, we’re left with compromises.

edited for a quick update, EF. My barrel has the same dimensions as yours does.

RS, after loosening the barrel grub screw, and the rail bolts, does the barrel simply slide out with a bit of a wiggle? How’s it removed, in other words.

PS your scenario of cutting one long barrel blank to make two unchoked barrels is a bit unsettling. Just goes to show…it’s always something.

To remove your barrel, first loosen all 8 screws on the barrel clamp. Afterwards, shove a tooth pick or something into the each barrel clamp (font/rear) to keep the clamps apart and it will help reduce the chance of scratching your barrel while sliding it out. Then remove the grub screw on top of the breech. The barrel is held in place with an oring so it might feel snug. With the moderator still attached to the barrel, grab it and pull it straight out towards the front of the gun.

My barrel has a 22mm gap between the back of the moderator and barrel clamp. Overall length of my barrel is just over 12.5″. OD is 15mm. It kind of bugs me that it longer than OEM and as a result the Shorty looks different when fully assembled. I had plans of installing an adapter for an LDC and it will thus add length on top of this.

quote REARSPROCKET:

“the dimple sits midway between the scope rail towers.I’d have a 6-inch barrel! :suprisedn: There is no alignment dimple near the breech on this barrel.”
Darryl if the dimple is that far ahead of the breech, I’d pull the barrel and push a few pellets through to make sure it’s choked. Someone could be cutting barrels in half to make two out of one, so one would end up without a choke. If it is choked I would not worry about the barrel. JMHO
The machining on the barrels looks good, the extra length is a preference area, some want it that way and others don’t.

OMG that would be a total Breech of trust at the highest levels of airguning

Those dimples mean it’s a cut down CZ200 barrel. The 19″ CZ200 barrels aren’t long enough to cut in half to make two barrels from one. My stock barrel measured rite around 11+3/4 to 7/8″ long IIRC.

Cricket, you are right. I live in the states. there is a golf course across the street from me, but that doesn’t count, except it’s pretty to look at. No shooting. I just don’t get to a range very often. The near one I spoke of has a three year waiting list to join. I go there as a guest with friends on rare occasions. Maybe this year I’ll get a bit more shooting in with my friends. :sadn:

iride, I agree with you in large part. A good shooter should expect groups of MOA or better at 50 yards in this day of airguns. Even in my limited shooting circumstance I have the Crosman 1701P pistol in a carbine stock, and Sparrows are dead ducks at 25 yards (using JSB 10.34 gr pellets @ 7.3 fpe). I also own a Parker-Hale Phoenix non-FAC in .22 tweaked to 13.5 fpe. Low power quiet for a close community. So my interest in the Short.

quote darryl:

Cricket, that’s a great idea. Sadly most of the woods around here are in city parks with walking paths. I’ll try to find some place, but even at that I’m looking at a drive. Sometimes I wonder if I should try a new hobby. But there must be some place I can get to and stretch this gun out that’s nearby. I’ll have to see what I can find.
Darryl
PS I took some photos today. I’ll add them to my photo-bucket and post them a bit later.

Sounds like you live in the states

I live in the land of forests, they are everywhere here and because of the allemansrätt I have the right to be in everyone of them, so long as I do not damage the trees. Not too long from there, maybe a 8min bike ride I have a local “trash place” on the outskirts of town where the crows gather…. :4:

I got a Crossman 760 pump up gun in 177 that is a 30 dollar gun that shots pretty tight groups at 25 yards,
At 50 yards it opens up big time,
\I think that’s the test of a gun for tight groups , (good barrels cheap barrels) :2cents:
I did a test a year or so ago on my 760 and my Cricket 22, at 25 yards it was pretty close , at 50 yards you could tell which one cost 1300 dollars.
I never posted the targets as no one really posted to my post so I just thought no one really cared,
Just saying.
Mike
oops I think that was on the Marauder site, Because it was the 177 Crossman , 22 Cricket and the 25 Marauder.

Oak, can I have my wallet back, please? Guys. I think I’m leaning towards a fixed magnification scope. I should have been more specific. Lightweight, and fixed magnification. I put my SWFA 16X on the Short, and it makes the gun feel decidedly top heavy.
but thank you (rich fellows) :biggrinn:
