Q:

big-bore springers?

Make a long story short http://www.airgunadvice.net/viewtopic.php?t=15334 caught this post from a newbie asking about .25 cal HW80.

Well I had to nicely tell him not be silly. Just because the manufacturer is putting a larger barrel on a 17 cal power plant does not mean it is right. I tried to explain it.

Next thing you know the usual butt-heads come in with their 2 cents and their stories about 100 yard shooting with HW50s ๐Ÿ˜€

And we wonder why they sell us smooth twist barrels?

I thought we are supposed to teach people the right airgun principles.

You try to explain something to people that bigger caliber is sure is good provided you have that muzzle energy behind it.

I don’t get it… but I think airgun forums should be informative with the right information that teach people good, basic principles of airgunning and caliber selection.

I might buy a TX200 in 17 for FT but not in 22. Still it’s the price that keeps me away.

I don’t hunt so a 22 springer is of no interest to me. And I think it’s too much power for FT.

I don’t just buy different rifles to try them out, $1300 to test calibers for the same rifle is a bit excessive, that’s what forums are and questions for.

Unless it was a springer benchrest match I would not choose to shoot one in competition…

Is there even a springer BR division. ๐Ÿ˜•

Wasn’t there a guy at that match with a ST FX rifle? ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I thought both those TX200 calibers were super accurate. ๐Ÿ˜•

17 is better at a longer range,, ๐Ÿ˜‰ try them out and see.

quote synopsys:

Yeah but a guy there was shooting a Talon in 22…

that gets like 35fpe, for 50 yards in plenty.. I would have taken a tuned Condor though against those guys.[/quote]

Yeah but a guy there was shooting a Talon in 22…

I don’t see that shoot as a model of what to use and what not to use… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Don’t push it buddy… ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

I tried to find LD’s thoughts on caliber size at distances for bench rest but can’t seem to locate it. ๐Ÿ™

Are you saying the TX200 in 22 isn’t as accurate as the 17 at the same distance?

I thought both those TX200 calibers were super accurate. ๐Ÿ˜•

They are not shooting .22 TX200 at Benchrest? Why? ๐Ÿ˜† http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/message/1312862704/Phoenix+Benchrest+August+Match+Report%2C+(pic+heavy) I guess those guys agree with me too..

I was just curious if it would have less depth in the rifling marks that’s all… I kind of doubt it would be useful because of what might happen on the way back out…

The pellet you pushed through the LW match barrel appears to have grooves that are not as deep as a normal LW barrel. Looks nice and even too. My barrels appear to have a bit more depth to the marks.

I really don’t like the way the ST barrel “marks” the pellet. It appears that a misshapen or mis-swaged pellet would set crooked more easily in that type of barrel and then ‘fight’ the shallow grooves at the end. Those pushed through pellets look wrong and it looks like a lot of pressure and that’s friction.

I was under the impression that the ST barrels had grooves all the way but they were less deep than a regular rifled barrel. I saw the image of the MRod ST barrel at the muzzle end and thought the exterior rifling was a product of the aluminum part being pressed on.

But after reading all 21 pages of your thread I now understand the ins and outs of the ST. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A ST barrel should be called a light groove choke on a smooth tube… “smooth twist” is misleading… But I do think a true smooth twist (where the rifling is the whole length but not as deep as normal) would work well. But those are probably called LW match grade barrels. ๐Ÿ˜†

All I can say is WHY??? And WTF!!! ๐Ÿ˜•

Shit, i’m agreeing with you again. Should I throw in some insults to keep the views up? ๐Ÿ˜†

Asshole!! Is that better. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜‰

Why would you want to push it back before it hits the choke? ๐Ÿ™‚ You think the pellet won’t pick up any rifling? ๐Ÿ™‚

that is a .25 barrel Randy from RL send me. Those that come with 11 degree target crowns.

I personally like to fire pellets into a stack of very soft pillows from walmat and then recover them to see how the rifling is engaging. That is how I test my my guns.

Pushing the pellet through the bore is OK gives a general idea about the barrel.

Some guys shoot into a bathtub full of water to recover projectiles, but that can be dangerous and ricochet in your face ๐Ÿ™‚

I am still puzzled to be honest why FX would venture into these ST barrels, and put their reputation on the line to save few bucks.

๐Ÿ˜ฏ I can imagine that will get interesting… ๐Ÿ˜‰

But I’ll bust that myth too how LW barrels “need change” ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ve heard that the most recent batch of LW barrels rock! Why would anyone want to change that? ๐Ÿ˜•

DaveG makes some beautiful stocks, don’t know anything about his rifles though. I did read his post about his smooth twist barrels and thought of you! ๐Ÿ˜†

Do you post on the Yellow?

I’ve got a good question for you, do you have a LW barrel that isn’t choked and pushed a pellet thought it? Or would it make any sense to push it back out before the choke to see what the rifling marks would look like? ๐Ÿ˜• I’m curious to see if it would be different than the ones you posted.
