Q:

Blowguns!

So I decided to try out a blowgun after looking at the aoa blog to help a friend adjust his power level after, ahhh nevermind.

BUt anyways I have no idea what to order, 5 foot, 4 foot, 50 cal, 625 cal(what I think I want)

http://www.coldsteelarizona.com/c/6/big-bore-blowguns

These seem to be nice, I was thinking maybe the 5foot 2 piece one?

Also I doubt Im going to be stealth warrior ninja, and read you can coat them(darts) in something for hunting?
Pick your poison.

I brought the Condor Blowgun to a friend’s shooting range when we were setting up a .308 AR. After we get the scope set up and dialed-in, I mounted the CS pipe on the Condor for a demo.

First, he doubted the dart would reach the plywood target base at 70-75 yds. I wasn’t sure either. When it was aimed a little high, the dart went screaming over the target, so the next shot was pointed closer to center. It might have dropped a few inches, but at 70 yds, the dart went a good inch into the plywood!

“Holy shit!” “Do you think that would go through a car door?”, he said.

One way to find out. He had a junker ready for the scrap yard, in the woods, an old Cherokee. At about 20 yds, the dart had no trouble going through the rear seat car door, completely through it and caught in the back of the driver’s seat! 😯

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a camera, but if I can, I’ll post some pics. What really surprised me was it was more accurate, at long range, than I suspected. I just sighted down the blow gun, as if it were “normal”, not shouldering the contraption, but resting in the middle of my chest. I might put a scope back on to see what happens. I’m having trouble sending the Condor off for a .25/slug conversion, too much fun!

Might be a good idea to get a cheap used frame and permantly convert it to a condart?

Also I actually have had good luck with the big broadheads with frogs, but still havent gotten the elusive bull frog.

Unfortunately, I didn’t weigh them out. I’ll need to make some more darts and also check them with the CS blowgun the way it came out of the box, without a Condor at the other end!

This was one of those fun, gotta try it projects which allows both the Condor and blowgun to quickly return to their stock configurations. Aside from the awkward length, the main drawback is the darts are going so fast, they self-destruct on impact; you only get one shot per dart. I want to try some JB Weld, instead of super glue, to reinforce the cones. If the target is far enough away, maybe they’ll survive impact.

The only reason the dart cones survive the blast of a Condor is that they’re the big bore, .625 size. The air blast coming out of the Condor slows down as it expands sideways to fill the big diameter of the blow pipe. That pipe, being 5 feet long, can hold a lot of air. I would bet that a smaller diameter blowgun would shred the dart cones.

Forgot to mention, the power wheel was set to 12. (The TH was set, with an o-ring, previously, for ‘Cudas. Took the stem o-ring out, ran up the pw/preload…easy.)

HOLY DARTS BATMAN!

Jesus dude, do you know how much they weigh?

Hey Bog, pm me I need to talk to you about something. [/quote]

😯 😎 😆

Here’s a shot of one dart which didn’t have the cone bored-out by acceleration, but just barely. You can see the thin spot, that’s another glue spot for the modified darts:

other cones, before gluing, didn’t survive:

the shaft cutting to lighten/shorten darts before gluing:

the bottom one is a CS stock-length dart.

The one inch shortened darts, middle set of four, seem the best. The super short, top two, disappear way into wood and are harder to find after shooting. Much like airgunning a nail.

Could be fairly accurate, with practice, up to 60 yards. At that distance, it would likely, at least, go through a 2 x 6.

Yikes! I slipped a 9/16 x 3/4 x 3/32 o-ring as a seat when the CS 5 foot blowgun gets put on a stock .22 Condor:

makes the whole rig 7 foot 9 inches long:

The CS mini broadhead darts were shortened by one inch and by two inches. Super glue, swabbed on the cleaned wire shank was pushed back into the plastic cone and dusted with baking soda to start catalyzing the glue which made a bead in front of the cone. A second bead of super glue was put behind the shaft, inside the cone; so, superglue on both sides, sandwiching the vulnerable seat inside the cone.

Vulnerable? Hell yeah…the first shot pushed the cone so fast, it ripped over the wire shaft; the acceleration was too high for the plastic. The cones either split in half or got holes bored through them. The super glue trick worked. The one-inch shortened dart was clocked at 619 fps and the darts shortened by two inches, as in the photo above:

The smaller dart easily went 60 yds into a hillside. One inch shortened darts did this to a 2 x 6:

went completely through, stripping off the cone and clipping a small dogwood tree

Shot into a gnarly red cedar/juniper:

Tophat was .060, tank pressure 2,800-2,400. Hi-flo valve. Darts were loaded into the blow pipe breech before sliding onto the Condor stock. The gun was held muzzle up to let the dart slide next to the muzzle before composing shots. Front hand held the pipe onto the Condor.

These things would go right through a deer.

Crazy! 😯

I wouldnt personally eat them as they are in a area where there is waay to much run off, from yards and storm drains.

But like I told you get a mangrove snake dude!
Because I have one and it ate most of the frogs and its wild caught so its use to more of amphibian, small lizard diet.

The couple he didnt put down I walked back down to the lake and the turtles ate them, we have a couple red eared slider and softshells and they go to town on anything that hits the water.

And it is attached, but its got enough slack for any frog shots, but I take it off during the day.

Its raining quite a bit right now, so I am going to walk back down there tonight. The lake is extremely low, so the frogs come up onto the bank which gives me time to shoot before they go water born.

Airgunner, glad you’re having fun. For the price, it’s countless hours of top-notch entertainment. I’d either eat the frogs yourself or find someone to give them to. Leaving a bunch of dead frogs is going to create a mighty stink and eventually draw attention.

Methinks we all need to hunt/use these things responsibly. It’s assholes that shoot innocent passersby and random pets that gets the public’s outrage up and next thing you know, blowguns get banned. Blowguns and airguns don’t get the political protection of the NRA. It’s easy to outlaw a weapon with a limited following and a big paranoid public.

Regarding the twine attachment: is it a twine “streamer”, a short piece not anchored, or is it attached? Whatever it is, you don’t want it snagging and bouncing back towards you. Maybe the cone would pop off, but who knows.

GTBJ, sorry ’bout the coffee, monitor thing man. You should know to swallow that coffee BEFORE you look at the screen! Remember, Hoot is out there, on the loose. 😯 But, since he’s left-handed and they don’t make left-handed blowguns, he’s probably not following this thread! 😆

Now for some exciting news:
If you take the mouthpiece off the CS Big Bore, it fits perfectly on a Condor stock, .22 cal. barrel! It’s so tight, I don’t think an o-ring is needed. I’m thinking of putting an o-ring on the back, where the pipe seats against the Condor, to prevent abrasion. It’ll be a pain to load, either muzzle-loading with a limited length ram rod, or take the pipe off, load and push froward using the barrel (to avoid barrel pinching the cone) and hold the pipe against the Condor, lightly, while shooting. I gotta try it. Not very practical, apt to be around 8 feet long. Wonder what the Chrony would show!

Sweet, I remember my first blowgun…. It was a 4ft Jivaro Blowgun I bought from an ad in the back of a “Soldier of Fortune” Magazine…. I loved that thing…the darts were .38 cal plastic balls and they gave you a bunch of spring steel rods… you would cut the rods with wire cutters at an angle and then heat one of the ends over a candle and shove it into the plastic ball, I remember sitting there and making a bunch of them.

I got pretty good with it. I pinned a squirrel to a tree by his tail and also drilled a barn swallow in the neck while it was flying around in circles inside my garage. I pinned that bastard to the drywall BooYah!!! don’t know whatever happened to it, but the new style darts are definitely more high tech.

Alright, probably most redneck thing I’ve ever done, shooting frogs with a blowgun lol. I live middle class white collar family and that was new.

I got about 15 in ten minutes, and got a double! They were having sex and got them both in the head.

No large bull frogs yet, only the tree and some small bull frogs, Ill post pictures tomorrow after I do it again, because its addicting.

My favorite dart is confirmed as the mini broad head, it flies straight, has sharp point and it is all metal.

I tried the bamboo ones for you rob but they seemed to drop to quickly, and the one frog I got with one broke the tip also they do not fit well in the “quiver”.

Seriously though after I taped the flashlight to it, awesome!

You guys should def check these out, for 40 bucks shipped, I had a gift card btw assman.
And get extra mini broad heads!

So I lost a whole bunch of darts in the grass, so I superglued and melted twine in the back of the dart so when I shoot its connected to the blowgun.

Lol thanks I got it.

Im just waiting for dark, got the quiver filled with the mini broadheads.
Gonna pop some!

quote Backyardairgunner:

Btw I dont understand the whole 2 blowguns in your sight picture thing?

If you will point your finger at a distant object, and look at the object, then you will see 2 fingers…When you look at your target with the end of the blowgun in your sight picture, you will see 2 ends of the pipe, unless you are looking at the blowgun instead of the target.
Now, you put what you want to kill in between those two images and then all you have to do is compensate for dart drop…Then take a big breath and tooooooooooo…

quote Backyardairgunner:

I just spilled coke all over my keys, not cool man.

I meant frogs! But we shall see what else is there.

Should I really use the bamboo darts?

I anchored a lizard to a tree with one earlier.

Btw I dont understand the whole 2 blowguns in your sight picture thing?

He means you should be seeing double. Like if you had a couple few beers, and you look at a womans chest and see 4 boobs! 😛
(that emoticon is the closest to chops licking I could find)
