Carette 4500 PSI Compressor Report

The Carette 4500 compressor is a Chinese compressor that seeks to fill the price performance gap between “big boy” dive compressors and Shoebox compressors.

Mr. Wang has kindly supplied a demonstrator unit for testing. As a demonstrator unit rather than a final production unit, the test unit may not match the appearance and configuration of the actual shipped units. This one included a PMV, high pressure air filter unit and automated condensate drain system. I do not know if those features will be in the final configuration. I have been told that the external finish will be better on the actual units. Also, the crankshaft bearing and rods will be more durable than those on this demonstrator.

I had hoped to be testing a unit that is an actual production sample, but because this is a demonstrator unit, bear in mind that the shipped product may differ from what I am testing. This does affect my ability to report whether the machine is a thumbs up or down. If the production units are worse than what I’m testing, I certainly wouldn’t be happy, nor would our forum members. On the other hand, I am getting very appropriate and encouraging responses from the manufacturer regarding my findings. Mr. Wang (Sincere) is actively improving the machine based on my comments.

For instance, he was ready about make changes regarding current draw based on my measurements. I don’t think changing the current draw would be worth it, if it slows the compressors. Also, the amount of oil I see in the condensate was already a known issue on this demonstrator. They already have a different component that cuts the oil bypass to 1/3 what I’m seeing. The oil bypass even on this demonstrator isn’t horrible. He’s also planning how to integrate the air filter on the compressor frame. It’s that type of desire to make a better product that I want in a manufacturer.

Rather than the demonstrator being perfect and production machines worse, we could end up with better production machines. However, I can only report what I am seeing and won’t speculate on what will actually ship to you. On the other hand, I have the impression that Mr. Wang actually does intend to deliver what he promises.

What a grown man, and a mature Berkshire Sow do in the privacy of their own lot, is nobody’s business!!!

You’re right Larry…I’ll end up with one of those Chinese electric bicycle pumps that Kiwi Beak is testing over in the nether regions.

Hoot, in a previous post the manufacture said the pre-order price was 1299.00 USD shipped!! I can’t find a current price shown anywhere.
I guess your out of luck on this one, you would never get more than 300 bucks for your last sow and I,m guessing there is some personal attachment issues.

Perhaps I missed it…do we have any idea of what this unit costs????

It’s an interesting compressor, with a lot of details, but I don’t want to waste my time researching a machine I can’t afford. I’d love to have one with all these features, but cost is a serious factor for me…I’m on a fixed income in Arkansas. If I have to sell my only hog to own one then there’s no deal!

Much of the compressor power load is reactive. so, that calculation for watts doesn’t apply.
You can calculate VA as RMS voltage x RMS amperage. Wattage requires integration.

I didn’t calculate or report VA figures because I really just need the amperage to assess load on the circuit. We don’t want RMS amperage to get too high. We pay by wattage, but the circuit still has to handle VA (which is larger)

The wattage figures I am reporting are active power(real power) displayed on my AC power meter. The meter doesn’t display apparent power (VA). Only the real power (watts) flowing through the load does work, but the apparent power (VA) is going to be higher. The circuit needs to handle the entire apparent power (VA) even if real power (watts) is lower

For the purpose of sizing electrical breakers and wiring, the amperage reading from the meter is the important one. That more directly relates to the load (VA) seen by the wiring. The wattage relates more to how much you will be paying to run the load.

The meter panel I’m using is the same type I’ve been using for testing my Mrodair, Bauer Jr ii, and this Carette. https://www.amazon.com/bayite-BAYITE-PZEM-061-Multimeter-Voltmeter-Transformer/dp/B00YY1KOHA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1481097645&sr=8-4&keywords=ac+power+meter

This keeps all the measurements I’m reporting on all three compressors under the same methodology. The wattage figures are simply read from the meter, not VA calculated my myself from amperage and voltage. I’m most interested in the amperage, since that is the limit we will run up against on a home circuit.

At 4500 PSI…
VA was (118 volts x 14.5) or 1711 VA <— your wiring has to handle this much heating effect
Wattage at that time was 1089 watts <— you pay the electric company based on this.
Power factor was (1089/1711) or 0.6 <— power company gets upset and charges businesses extra if power factor gets too low.

Bottom, line is the Carette does not trip a 15 amp breaker even when running at full load. The amperage stays low enough to avoid tripping the breaker. If you are super conservative, you’ll keep continuous loads below 80% of rated circuit breaker amperage. On a 20 amp circuit, this compressor would easily stay below that 80% threshold. Personally, I would run this compressor on a 20 amp circuit for best safety.

The Mrodair Fumigator Extreme, by contrast, drew crazy amperage for use on a 20 amp circuit. It measured 26 amps even without even pressurizing! It really needed to be on a special 30 amp circuit to safely run at 120 volts. Not many of us have a 30 am RV circuit in our homes. Sure, you could use one leg of a 30 amp 220 volt dryer outlet, but I sure didn’t have one in my garage.

The Carette 4500 has a reasonable amperage draw for commonly available home wiring. I really like that in a consumer product.

Watts divided by volts equals amps
1136 divided by 120= 9.46 amps

My wife, who has been watching my progress through the various compressors, was commenting on her own that even the castings for the metal parts look much better than on the Mrodair. They aren’t even comparable if you see them both live. The familiar shape of the crankcase in the on line pictures and videos had me concerned, but in person these looks like prime parts instead of seconds.

The Bauer synthetic oil I used is already 40w. While it looks like a lot of oil in the condensate I caught i the tray, it really is a small amount for the run duration. The Carette’s separator + PMV + cool compressed seems to do a good job actually separating water and oil from the output air. Also, there isn’t the smell of thermal cracked oil. I don’t think this compressor is dieseling its high pressure cylinder.

I wouldn’t want to breath air from this compressor, but it’s definitely doing better than expected.

Looks promising, seems like the build quality is way above nimrodair compressor. This will be very interesting unit, looking forward for tear down and internals. If it can deliver shoebox and altaros has some competition in the market, if you don’t have a shop compressor and don’t need one this could just be what’s needed in the pcp market.

Edit: you should use the included filter for fair review of the compressor, for that’s what people are getting.

What grade of oil did you use?
Is it the same grade that sincere use or recomande?
Will it be better to use a litle heavier grade “MORE THICK”?

First four parts are up.

Crazy work schedule lately including nights. Sorry, for the wait.

Sumptin funny going on here. If you click on Guykuo’s profile there is nothing in the “Last Active” section, and this appears to have been his final post……back on the 28th

Amen. I was beginning to think I was the only one who felt this way.

Test the machine crazily, please! Do not let it rest! Torture it please!

Actual content will replace these place holders over next few weeks.
