Dr. Steele’s Cricket finds a new owner this evening
Well, I’m gonna give that favorite little Edgun shorty some compact company as I got a hold of Steve again this evening and was able to purchase a special little used Cricket Compact Skeleton Stock in .22 just as I was wanting.
I feel fortunate in that this is a used gun with some nice tuning work from Ernest and has both the original and a N.C. moderator with an optional extension and was the gun previously belonging to the late Dr. Steel here on our forum. I have to say I am a bit sentimental and would much rather have this gun than a new one, it will always seem special to me. Rest in Peace brother, your gun will be in caring hands, enjoyed as you would have wanted and well kept in pristine condition and I will be honored to look after it for you.
Steve is as nice and good to deal with as everyone says !! Two thumbs up !!

Cricket Compact arrived earlier than expected and I just had a few minutes to play with it for now. But I do like what I see. Steve and Wild West Air Guns done a fantastic job with packing the gun and everything that came with it. Maybe even overboard, but who is ever going to complain about that. It arrived with 110 bar and I single loaded it using the installed single shot tray Ernest made when it was there. I fired 3 shots with and 3 more with out the LDC installed and wow it is quite with it, and about like my Edgun short without it upon first impression. Does the NC moderator make a significant difference compared to the original Moderator ?? So far so good. I have to read, study and figure it out. I’ll scope it up in a couple hours and go out side and play. Fun Fun… All for now.
I am down to hours now instead of days, should I take off tomorrow ?? and do a little bonding after lunch when she arrives.
I am completely wiped out with studying scopes for this gun, so for starters I decided to pull a little 4×32 Nikon off of my Browning BuckMark Carbine rifle, and start out with it cause I can get a feel for the lite weight. And them switch over to one of these jumbo size and feel Hawkes and see how much lite vs heavy feels differently. I will get something nice but just not sure what yet. I am honestly getting closer now than ever to just duplicating Shanu’s Leupold order and finishing some ” Unfinished Business ” for him and me…
This was severa years ago. wouldn’t hurt to give them a call, or getter yet, go to bass pro, cabellsa, ganderMt. sportsms wearhouse and check one out first hand.

Ride, sorry I didn’t get backk to you, my computer took a dump. Now on my wifes Comp.
My Zeiss is a 4.5×14. It is advertized to focus down to 25 but will go down to about 11 or 12. I tried a 24 zeiss, and it wouldn’t focus below 20 very well. 🙁

Ohhh nooo Ernst, lets not get started again…
I feel like a soldier seeing new baby pictures but cant get to my new off spring to hold them. I think I’ll go check the tracking to see where she is tonight.
Edit: She is coming through Champaign Ill. tonight.. I bet this is one of the most traveled Crickets out there. Been shipped out and received at lease 5 times now. Poor Little gun… Come to daddy
Nice. Very, very nice.
Just remember He wanted it shooting 33fpe 30+ shots but was getting only 25 shots, so I lowered it to 30fpe with 32shots.
Thanks again guys, I don’t know how I missed this…
Ernst, Steve at WWAG asked the same thing but I am not much of a seller so we won’t likely have to go there and figure that out. :winkn:
Doug…
P.S. I was shooting my 27″ edgun short this afternoon and now that I am scope shopping for the Cricket Compact I have realized I really don’t like the size and weight of the big Hawke scope this gun either so I done a bunch of shooting with the power wound down at 12x and below and for the ranges I like shooting, I might have to reconsider the mininum 20x criteria. Hell I am old and blind, who am I kidding about off hand shooting long range, this gun, and now my Ed short also both need smaller lighter lower profile scopes and not necessarily 20x.
Hey ride, post some more pictures of that awesome compact when you get it, I never get tired of looking at those compact cricket. Dr. Steele really did it right. have fun and congrats, shes a beauty!!!!
That is usually the case with better optics. My Delta , iex, focus down to 15 meters at 30x and closer still if you wind the power down. The factory claims down to 25 meters so it clearly does much better than advertised.
BTW – Delta and Clearidge are both made at the same plant in Japan. Same tube and everything on both AO and SF models.
EDIT – I lied … Checked it today and i can focus it down to +-20 meters at 30x , full power. If i wind it down i can come as close as 10 meters.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2. This POS iPhone sucks though …
Ride, I don’t know what the near focus on the higher Zeiss is. I have heard the sam as you. 50 yards. Mine is only a 4.5×14 and it will focus down to 10 and under, but not at full power. Which I don’t need anyway. I mean, I can see the target or game just fine at 10 yards. I don’t need to see the mites on the hair folical to kill a tree rat! But the flee’s come in good! 😯
Serriously, I can see .177 pellet holes just fine at 100 yards with a zeiss at 14x. My buddys night eater can’t see them at 24x or anywhere in between. Power isn’t every thing. But resolution IS! 😉

You know, I do need to think about that, I was assuming that most list nearest focal range at full power but that is not logical thinking. I’m going to the shop to get my Hawke and experiment, I’ll be back !!!
Nope, My Hawkes are obviously rated at lowest power, crystal clear at 6-8x at 10 yards but muddy up with zoom. Yet Zeiss claim only 50 yard to infinity focus but you say they are clear at 10 yds. at low power ??? Sounds like a little truth in advertising issue. What model is your Zeiss ?? This is starting to get interesting again.
That SF clearridge looks sweet!

Here is the other offering they have under 20 oz. !!!!! 20x zoom side focus,to 10 yards, 1/8 moa adjustments. 19 ounces and 15.5″ long. It is still an AO adjust but it looks like it is easier to grip and access, maybe even see with this design.

This one is interesting at least, lighter shorter at 13″ long, smaller than Hawke still 20x, Side PX down to 25Y and 23oz. Another Clearidge option I found.

Wow these little buggers use a lot of air and go through a lot of pellets fast. !! Your guys don’t want or need my review but I will just comment on likes and dislikes and in each case and it will be in comparison to my Edgun .22 short which is 1.5″ longer. Bear in mine this is all based on first blush and shooting 4 mags through the Cricket. First Impression only.
P.S. what kind of .177 compact shot count are we talking about.
……………………………..
Likes:
14 round pellet capacity of the mags is nice.
Grip and feel is better, Edgun grip would likely be a non issue to someone with bigger hands or he would just contour it some.
I like the look of the centered magazine design, looks less added on
I like the ease in which this N.C. mod. and LDC can be installed without the tensioned barrel setup
I like the availability of extra mags. at a very reasonable price. I got 6 total.
………………………………
It’s a Wash:
For now the general use and function of the multishot is a wash. Eds holds fewer pellets but changing mags is a much nicer design. The effort is similar but I think I prefer Ed’s straight pull bolt to the rocking arc feel on the cricket thus far, in this .22 caliber but it is iffy either way. Ed’s .25’s pull lots harder than the .22’s and this comparison will be subjective based on caliber.
………………………………
Dislikes:
Installing or changing mags is not well thought out.
shot count seems low but I’m not sure of anything yet on this.
Semi gloss Finish on the stock looks porous and cheap compared to the more hand rubbed look of Ed’s stocks. Crickets would be much more handsome in low sheen hand rubbed finish, ” Opinion”
I kind of think the multishot bolt pull on the Edgun 25 caliber was long and hard and the Cricket might really shine in that comparison. On the other hand the If I could still buy a new Edgun R3 then it would be a real tough decision. In it’s absence I am pretty sure I would now opt for a cricket in 25 caliber -vs- the R3m being my only choice from Edgun. I think Ed has really hurt himself by not offering us the option to buy the Edguns in R3 if desired. I have both breeches for my Ed .22 and like it that way but always keep the R3 setup on the gun it seems.
If Ed brings back the R3’s I think the Ed’s would always be the single load bullpup and the Crickets will be the multi’s but Ed could have the advantage of offering both easier than Kalibergun. I have Ernests single load tray for this Cricket but the Edgun just seems to make a better platform for single load.
