Q:

Dr. Steele’s Cricket finds a new owner this evening

Well, I’m gonna give that favorite little Edgun shorty some compact company as I got a hold of Steve again this evening and was able to purchase a special little used Cricket Compact Skeleton Stock in .22 just as I was wanting.

I feel fortunate in that this is a used gun with some nice tuning work from Ernest and has both the original and a N.C. moderator with an optional extension and was the gun previously belonging to the late Dr. Steel here on our forum. I have to say I am a bit sentimental and would much rather have this gun than a new one, it will always seem special to me. Rest in Peace brother, your gun will be in caring hands, enjoyed as you would have wanted and well kept in pristine condition and I will be honored to look after it for you.

Steve is as nice and good to deal with as everyone says !! Two thumbs up !!

I´m sure Leupold will change them Turrets for lower ones if you want. That said i myself like my Turrets high, wide and mighty. My fingers are like a bundle of slack Dick´s so the beefier the Turret the better for me !

A friend of mine has one of these on his AA 510: It´s very compact, has good optics and everything. Made in Japan by Optical Light Works and weighs under 12 oz. Unfortunately and despite its good glass and function it´s only max 9x , mil-dot and AO. 😥
If it was atleast 20x i wouldn´t care about the other “shortcomings” but …

Leupold is closed due to bad weather !! maybe next week.

Ville : I would not even trust the smaller OBJ. sidwinders until I could play with one myself, only the 56’s so far.

Knife : I have looked at Zeiss and the focus at 50 yard and beyond as far as I can find, not good for a compact .22 hunter taking closer shots.

My best bet is still to simulate working the adj. Obj. on my Nikon on my shorty Edgun this weekend to see if I can live with that, and if so getting ahold of Luppy next week and see if I can get their B.C. correct BDC type reticle for my trajectory data or maybe swap the turrets for a tactical resetable style. I like running the turrets for elevation, especially in the wind with compensation in two planes being difficult, as opposed to using holdover. Proper dope settings on the scope and (1) great shot is more satisfying to me than a holdover shot. I like it to be more sniper style, very calculating, one shot 1 kill. Or, …in SeCoda’s case, One shot, 1 or 2 or 3 kills !!!! :biggrinn:

Hemm: I have to admit that i have been overlooking how obnoxious they really are, i will ask Luppy about that as well, i getting ready to call shortly

Donny F. wrote, Thanks for the info Mike, I’ll give it a try and if I don’t like it within 30 days I could always send it back to Amazon or resale on the Yellow. I’ve seen a few for sale for cost but they usually lose out on the shipping. Not a big deal. What are you shooting these days?

Donny, I stick with the company that started it all. Zeiss 😉 Light, precise adjustments, nice ret. choices and almost unbelieveably crisp and bright optics, and the higest recoil and light transmision ratings in the industry. What more could any one ask for? 😀

RIDE – Take a look at this : http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=64816
Make him an offer “he can´t refuse” for that one.

… OR bolt one of these Lymans on the Compact. The “scope” would be twice the length of the Gun ! http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=64759

So they keep telling me. I´ve never even taken a peek thru a Sidewinder. I may have to – just for the sake of it. I actually don´t (and can´t) base my opinion on any scope just by staring thru one on a Shop or so. I need to take it to the range, mount and adjust everything and shoot to be able to make an opinion. Maybe i´m dumb but all the Scopes seem to have that bright and clear image when one stares thru them in and outside a Shop. That magically changes once i get to the Range and start zooming, clicking, ajusting and Fuxing around. 😯
That´s why all my Scope business goes to Astro Sweden nowadays. They (Georg) send me the scope i´m interrested in and i can test it as i see fit (without making any marks etc,of course) and if i´m satisfied i´ll buy it – if not i send the bugger back. Return postage already paid and all. THAT, my Friend, is Customer Service Daddy likes !!

BTW Ride – I think you´re closing in on your final decision. That Leo looks almost perfect. If it only had a SW PX it would be perfect AND weigh even less. Call to Leupold and tell them that they´re very close to a perfect scope for Bullpup´s – just add several proper reticule choices and a SW parallax and Voila´!!

brother Rid,
Dont you think that the nobs are so high and will exceed the compact ability of your bullpup?
My only problem with my 8.5-25X42 is only the nobs.

Thanks

Ok guys, I have been through the ringer studying on this scope deal for Shanu’s gun. He went through it before me and I am coming to almost the same conclusion. I want close in focus, under 18 to 20 oz. nice glass, short so it looks nice on the gun. I think I have made the decision to order this scope and want the TAG’s feedback before dropping the money on this scope. I know Leupolds are not good enough for some of you guys but this particular model has the whole list covered. Focuses close in, weight = 17.3 oz. !! that is big to me, nice glass, compact to fit well on the gun. I need to study reticle options and see if they have a side focus option in a near by model with similar specs, but I am real close…

Yes !!! I suspected as much and was fishing for that response when i listed the model i like so well. I also have a 4-16 varmint series that is new and fits your description. My big HAWKES are light years better but 250% more costly. I prefer thier optics to $2500 Leupold up to 18-20x but they falter after that and their heavy at 27oz.

I have no educated opinions – i just draw opinions and answers from my sleeve. For the record – my dislike towards Hawke builds on my experience in “lesser” Hawke models, such as Varmint, Eclipse, Panorama and lesser models still. My Varmint 6-24 SF had milkier optics than my Bug Buster. I send it back for replacement and got new one – with overly thick reticule. Send that back and got one with PX problems. Send that one back with a notion that the next damned scope they take from the shelves WILL go thorough calibration and inspection before it gets send to me. They did that and then i received a scope that worked as intented ,finally. But my respect and trust for that Brand is gone. :angrymob:

quote Sir Ville:

Good thinking – Iron sights are lightweight, no PX boogaboo needed and they can take a beating. Sadly those aren´t much good for precision shooting past 3 yards or so …

That and I can’t see them any more.

I know you don’t like the Hawke scopes, but for airgun use, they work well for me, especially when price is a data point in the decision making. I only buy one model and it is the 6-24X56 HK-4010 and it does very well to 20x all the time and needs brighter light to preformas as well at 24x. I normally shoot with them set on 20x and am very satisfied. I do find an exception to this and especially now on the smaller guns in that when using them on my Edgun Shorty .22, it proves out your point that they are unpleasantly heavy and to me they also create an overly top heavy feeling gun to boot. Thus the 18 to 20 oz. imposed limit, The Cricket compact being smaller yet and all this talk about the weight has made me more weight conscious and very picky as to choosing the perfect scope for this gun. I additionally will be willing to work through ring options to set it as low as possible this time. I’ve been lazy on that in the past and cut corners. I guess I am using the fact that this was supposed to be Shanu’s gun to keep me on point and make decisions of perfection. Let me know when you figure out the perfect formula. As of now I am still leaning to the scope posted. I can easily hold and run the AO to focus for a scope that meets all other needs and weight a half a pound less when I can’t find an alternative. I am not speed shooting, I am just shooting to hit my targets. You made me this way !!! I was happy with my junk Hawkes until you came along with all your educated opinions and got me all confused… :biggrinn:

Anyone out there got any better ideas. ????

Good thinking – Iron sights are lightweight, no PX boogaboo needed and they can take a beating. Sadly those aren´t much good for precision shooting past 3 yards or so …

I agree with you and vill’s comments both above but the trade off in the next scope option I see is a half a pound. I am considering this due to the compactness of the whole package making it less of an issue to get to the AO as opposed to a side wheel. I have a very similar size format Nikon I may dig out of the safe and experiment with this concept before buying. I want Side PX adjust too but the combination does not exist as far as I can find irregardless of price. If I jump up in the Luppys to get side PX Adj. then the weight goes up so close to my hawke that it is no longer worth twice the price for weight savings. Im at a loss for now unless I buy this one. I think I am going to call the Leupold Custom shop and dump the criteria on them and see where it leads before I give up and put iron sights on her. :confusedn:

Ride,

I’m a big fan of Leupolds. As long as there’s a side px and space permit the eye relief/length, I’d go for it. My preferences are for 50mm, but then the px angle gets more acute as mounts go up, especially at close range (really had to practice hold over for those 7 yd. “cherry” shots). The 40 seems a better fit for that gun.

quote knifemaker:

Nope, it won’t Donny. Infinety ususlly is 500 and beyond. But probably not on a BB scope.

If it did work, it wouldn’t be an adjustable paralax scope in the first place.

You have to realize, that Paralax adjustment is NOT for focus only. It is to set the paralex. Where the cross hair does not move in relation to the target in relation to the eye when not perfectly centered. Yes, it does focus to an extent. But that is NOT waht it is for.

For what ever reason. when scope manufactures moved the paralex adjustment from the front to the side, they changed the name from paralex adjustment to side focus, and this has been confusing shooters ever since. 👿

You are a descerning shooter. I dont’ think you are going to like the optics of the bug buster at all. but they are easy to re-sale. I have only looked thru a few, but I can tell you that they have some of the worst optics I have ever seen offere for sale in a scope costing over 25 dollars. Sorry. I don’t want to run down your purchace, but they areally are that bad. 🙁

Knife

Well put! I have almost the same experience with the BB except there are many of those around with amazinfly clear optics. Most are nothing to hang on the Christmas Tree but if you’re lucky the one you buy may have much better optics and thin reticle to boot. It’s the same old Chinese QC thing, i quess.
And as tou say, the PX adjustment is often referred as “focus”- which it is not. It’s an adjustment for correction of PX error.

If you’re willing to invest 700+ $ then make sure it has a side wheel PX adjustment. You’ll get pissed at fumbling with that AO .
