Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. πŸ˜‰

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… πŸ‘Ώ

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. πŸ™„

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. πŸ˜‰

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. πŸ˜‰

Cheers from Trygve πŸ˜€

To be continued……….. πŸ˜€

I know I’ve posted this earlier (page 6-8 somewhere in this thread), – but look through this video again:

Keep your eyes on the hsp and see how it curls. Now, can you imagine how it behaves with the adjuster turned all the way in ???? πŸ˜‰

πŸ˜€

We haven’t seen too many shotstrings from the CZ Crickets yet, but yours don’t look right Sherrod. Also the fact that the hsp seems to be turned all the way in puzzles me a little. Would be interesting to see what it gives in terms of fps with the hsp turned back out (adjuster flush with the breech block)…

It certainly looks like you have a weaker hsp than I have…….. πŸ™„

What fps do others get ????

Cheers

Gotta agree with Sherrod here. I have a 27 foot pound .22 (FX Cyclone) and it drops pigeons better than my Edgun which is currently shooting at 32 foot pounds. Seems the slower pellet has less of an “ice pick” affect and transfers more energy to the bird. Just my personal observation. Still prefer my Edgun over FX any day!!!!

That’s where I’m at.

I’m no Cricket mechanic, I can tear apart any darn thing. Its the putting back together when I often have problems. So check with others to verify this info, but..

In my experience, in general..A heavier hammer spring hits the hammer HARDER to get MORE power. Something for you to look into, if it bothers you.

But if it shoots well, Don’t touch it..

But it sure looks like a nice little gun, I want one if only I had the spare bucks.

Mine does seem to be down a little on power but it shoots similar groups compared to the edgun I owned. I did notice after looking at a few pics of other owners hammer spring adjuster, it looks like mine is screwed way in.

Here is another Cricket .22 shot string from Sherrod833

I’m not gonna mess with it and make a nice graph, the short story is 827Max and 811min.

At a quick glance its a 16pfs diff, which is very similar to my Edgun at 19fps..and others have done better
There was one super sweeet Cricket string posted earlier, and a few Edgun people have claime a similar super shot string.

My conclusion, is that they are both nice guns. Edgun a bit more power, Cricket a little smaller. Both are georgios guns.

I think Ed has a some competition

I want the R3,don’t have one yet. Sucks, stuck with my 2.5 for now, but I like your idea old guy. come on zoco let me have it. I don’t want you getting grey hair over adjusting the regulator. I think I’ll figure it out,or try to anyway. it’ll fix both our problems I’m getting grey hair waiting for the next edgun shipment, you’ll get it over the reg. Just send it to me, itll fix both our problems . Of course i dont want you to lose in the deal, ill take care of all shipping costs not a problem.
Keep up the good work zoco and everyone else and Merry Christmas to everyone of you guys an your families as well

Hey Sparky congratulations on being #70,000 viewer πŸ˜€ I thought having a pick of Zocoloco rifles was a great idea πŸ’‘ but I’m not so sure Trygve bought into it πŸ™ Keep us all posted about which one you pick and some photo’s when it’s delivered would be wonderful πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ 😎

Merry Christmas to all,

Mrnewbie, you don’t locktite, cause the higher pressure pushes them behind the regulator which makes sure it doesn’t become loose.

The.22 edgun can be modified to accommodate the .25 by turning the regulator higher but what’s also needed is increasing the plenum chamber to at least 40cc the one that is between the regulator & the valve in your picture, other wise you will have to go really high on the regulator, a general rule for a plenum chamber is 1cc/fpe.

So assuming ur going to be shooting the JSB 25.4 grain @ 900fps that would be around 45 fpe, a 40-45cc would defiantly help in not going really high with the regulator, but that’s not all, the transfer port, inlet valve etc, all has to be sized too.

I’m not saying the default won’t do, but lets just say it won’t be efficient or might be stressed etc…

And I would agree to all of the above !!! πŸ˜€

No shooting here for a few days…..

Looking after grandson now…. πŸ˜€

Cheers πŸ˜€

PS: Naser, – Sorry for my mistake. Getting old does something to you ! 😳

PS:

And I’m not sure the valve rod will handle the high HST.
idd Dont use locktite.
IsΒ΄nt the thread supposed to leak in order to let the regulator work propperly?
Loctite might give a problem.
The latest valve from Ed does have a bigger regulated chamber.
