Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. πŸ˜‰

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… πŸ‘Ώ

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. πŸ™„

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. πŸ˜‰

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. πŸ˜‰

Cheers from Trygve πŸ˜€

To be continued……….. πŸ˜€

@ LTLurker

Is that polygonal rifling? Also, the crown looks concave or at least in a angle on your picture and not straight as in zocoloco’s picture. Did you take a look at the lead as well?

The barrel shroud and thread sure looks nice. It doesn’t look like my R3 Matador when I first got it, a year and a half ago. First batch of R3s. Many improvements since than.

Still waiting the electronic trigger and the multishot version.

Here’s a picture of my R3 .25 cal long barrel. I wasn’t really trying to take a picture of the end of the barrel when I took this picture in April but it does look a little different. Not sure but looks like less grooves and a somewhat different crown to my barrel. I’ll try to get time to take a more direct picture this weekend.

OK Trygve, now that I have had some sleep, I can actually comprehend what I am looking at! Your picture also shows the baffle nut! I usually take pictures of the muzzle end with the baffle off.

Apparently, the old brain wasn’t working too well last night! 😳

quote oldgoat:

If your 2nd pic is of your Matador, it looks absolutely nothing like mine!

Dear OG,

Here’s a slightly different image of my R3 muzzle (same image but not cropped that much):

Would you kindly post an image of your R3 muzzle for us to compare ?

Explain “new improved trigger” please?
It looks the same as my R2.5?

Ed was mentioning sometime back in another thread I think. I cannot fint it right now. That said, – it may not have been put into production quite yet… πŸ˜‰

Ed should be able to comment on this……..

Ed ????

Cheers πŸ˜€

Good idea Mark, – and I have a defect lawn mower which may now lose it’s starting handle. That’s what I always said, – never throw anything……….. πŸ˜‰

quote Ed:

We began to make a crown at LW factory, plus 2.4 euro to the price of the barrel, but crowns are very good both the look and the accuracy.

Since when ????

That said, I find mine good already. But I like your approach and attention to detail……… πŸ˜€

Now to sum it up:

Since the release of the R3, – the following changes have been implemented/announced, – and please add/correct me if I am wrong:

– stainless bolthandles
– new improved valve system allowing for more shots pr fill
– new improved trigger
– LW made and polished crown
– new design of butpad
– breech to be made of aluminium

and not to forget:

– multishot version “available” soon……….. πŸ˜€

Anything else that I may have forgotten …………. ??? 😳

All:

I am hereby officially putting myself on top of the list for the multishot version, – whatever the R-number it may be (R4?).

Ed do you read me ?????

The first R4 or whatever you may call the multishot, std. length and cal.22 goes to me in Norway !!!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Unfortunately nothing is known about new product developments from the Kalibr Cricket side.

Maverick still does not communicate……… πŸ˜₯

Cheers πŸ˜€

Loco, it is way past my bedtime and I really need to get to bed!

I messed up and checked the TAG one more time and I saw your pics comparing the muzzle ends of the Cricket and Matador. If your 2nd pic is of your Matador, it looks absolutely nothing like mine!

I am really wondering just WTF is going on! Off to bed but, I will check in on my Iphone tonight.

quote kazzz:

To check what’s under and that it can be removed πŸ™‚

When you finally get it off, – inspect the crown area and wipe it clean with a patch. After several thousand shots there is a buildup of led deposits in the crown area. Nothing really important, but for those interested in the ultimate accuracy everything matters…….. πŸ˜‰

That said, – there is a BIG difference in finish of the crown between the R3 and her Ladyship……..

While the R3 crown has been factory polished to a almost mirror like condition, – her Ladyship shows off rather sharp microgrades inside the crown itself. She does not seem to have polished her thing at all. As a result there is already a considerable buildup of led around the opening where she expects me to put my snake…:

You should be able to see from the above the microgrades as well as the led I’m talking about……..

My R3s look very different and they have roughly had the same number of shots:

To me it seems that while her Ladyship apparently has forgotten that a man eventually may want to come inside her, – the R3s apparently have prepared themselves to perfection. I have reasons to believe this is true for the inside of the barrels as well…..

My cleaning is proof enough. The patches I pull through the R3 turn out much cleaner than the ones delivered by her Ladyship, and that after the same number of shots……. πŸ˜‰

Cheers again ! πŸ˜€

OG, now it’s my time to help πŸ™‚

http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/Crown%20Saver.html

There it is.. but for you guys, for me in BE or NL (europe) we don’t have something like that :((((

Why just dont use a straw thrue the shroud and baffle as a guide?

Come on you guys! To quote my grandkids, β€œYou are sooooo last century!” πŸ˜†

I really thought that you guys with all of the high end air guns would have a good solution to quickly clean a baffled air gun shroud barrel combination!

Kazzz PMed me with a question as to how to clean the barrel and now I see that Loco has resorted to using toothpicks! 😯

I don’t even want to know what Hoot uses! πŸ˜†

I use a Crown Saver that I got from http://www.mac1airgun.com/ . He doesn’t show it on his site, you have to call or email him for one.

I really doubt that he makes them himself so; you over seas guys might be able to find them locally. If you can’t find one locally, I am sure that Mac1 will sell you one. IIRC, mine was under $12 shipped and it works great! I keep mine coiled up in a jip lock bag in my range bag. If needed, it easily srtaightens out for use.

The outer plastic sleeve can be slid over the inner cord so the cord is just barely exposed. I have no trouble guiding it thru the baffles. When it gets to the breech end, I just guide it up and pull it out. I can then grab the inner cord and pull it back out of the outer sleeve, insert a patch and pull the patch thru the barrel.

I sent Kazzz this pic of my Crown Saver.

I didn’t have a pic of the crown Saver protruding out of a Matador’s breech end so I had to run my Crown Saver thru my R3 22 long, take a pic and upload it to Photo bucket. It was so easy to run the crown Saver thru the baffles and barrel that, this currently one armed oldgoat had no problems! It took me under 5 seconds to push it thru and pull the cord out.

Sheesh! Some times I wonder about you guys! πŸ˜†

Ok guys.. I’ll try that and.. A very friendly guy from Holland offered me a free to send barrel cleaner (something similair like zoco’s) so you can’t refuse that because it was already on mail before I could say yes or no πŸ™‚

Let’s see how that works out! Thanks already!
