Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. 😉

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… 👿

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. 🙄

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. 😉

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. 😉

Cheers from Trygve 😀

To be continued……….. 😀

(if you so desire…… 😳 )

Talk about speed
Lies in regulator
And even speed up 960 fit
18.1jsb

zoco,

I love your place & the great pictures you take brother. What I would like to know though is since you are one of the first to own the Cricket, are there any changes to the new ones compared to your Cricket ?

quote SECoda:

My .22 Cricket came set at 33 FPE (JSB 18s at 903 FPS). That regulator should go higher. Some of the .22 Crickets coming in the US were set over 940 on 18s.

Hi SECoda
As a matter of fact we are a group of cricket owners who interact with each other via what’s up and I know for sure that one cricket .22 cal. Shot the JSB 18 grn at 965 fps that is 37.4 ft lb. , mine was 924 fps appr. 34.3 ft lb. , with the same 250 fill pressure. . As you have mentioned the reg setting is definitely different.

I believe the cricket disadvantage to air efficiency is its longer port from regulator to breech. A bit more air needed to fill that space per shot.

Great to see this thread back on topic Trygve and your photos are always inspirational, lets hope it stays this way.. Thankyou Naser for putting things straight and ending what could have been another muddy side road in the paved highway this thread has been. Im sure Ed will sort the matter from here on.
Congrats on the new March optics Trygve it looks great, as does the world through it!
Id love to see two of the latest models of these two pups duel it out in shot capacity and velocity consistency.. Something tells me that even before Eds upgraded more efficient valve was introduced that the cricket is more of an inefficient air hog than the Matador, more so now that the bugs reg is running on its redline from factory settings…

….A year later & 30 pages & this thread is live & going hehehe 🙂

A “monster thread” for sure, – but stil making good reading for some I guess…. 😀

– and I’m still comparing……………… 😉

And struggling to find a winner. May be there isn’t one……

Sub beercap sized groups at 60-70 mts have become the norm if the wind isn’t too heavy……….

Right now I am here looking out of my door (too lazy to go out):

The little jetty (70 mts away) and the small bays on either side offer some quite interesting wildlife at times. Crows come there to dig out goodies when the tide is low. Seagulls too, and not to forget all the eider ducks that dive for crabs alongside the majestetic white swans.

Every now and then it happens that a dead duck is pushed ashore by the wind and waves…. :6:

That may spark some interesting fights between crows and the great black-backed seagulls. Unless the wild minks or otters have been there first of course….

Come early morning and the fox is sweeping his territory. He is just as shy as the occasional venison which you find a lot of on this island. And not to mention the badgers which are all over during night. And the summer night doesn’t really get dark at all. Plenty enough light for a good scope, – and if needed a small green light may be helpful…..

So here I am comparing guns and scopes:

– and through the March the world out there looks like this:

(Sorry for bad image quality, – difficult to shoot freehand ….. 😳 )

If nothing else, it should reveal that headshots wouldn’t be too difficult at that distance……………

Btw Master ED hits with more of an authority than Lady Cricket. Has to do with power.

There’s a lot more punch in an 18 grs JSB travelling at 940 fps than a 15.8 grs travelling at 870 fps….

Isn’t it a pity we’re not allowed to hunt with airguns in this country…………??? :3: 😳 😳 😳

I’ll stay up tonight I think………. 😉

Cheers
Trygve 😀

Thank you for listening ❗ :3:

Ed,
He’s saying that in the pictures attached which reads in Arabic “for the second time & again” as in they have or will order cricket for the second time.

Also the fact that on Kaliber Gun’s website they are the distributor so it cant be a one time order only.

A year later & 30 pages & this thread is live & going hehehe 🙂

he says this is your distributor & he sells your guns for 700 Kuwaiti Dinars $2450 & sells the cricket for only 450-550 depending on caliber which is $1570-1900, he also says the Cricket is a better gun.

Thank you very much, Naser!

I know about Azeez selling Crickets, he told me about it before he began to do it, saying that it was just one deal. Since he took a lot of my guns to sell them for the price I set to him with 100 % prepayment I agreed with that one deal. If he will go on selling Crickets more — he would to choose either to stay EDgun dealer or go to Cricket, that is not an issue to me at this point. Besides I have more orders from him.

As for the spare parts. That is true — he didn’t have spare parts for a while, but now he has main parts to meet the clients need. Not all of them but majority. I saw the broken handle at the bolt in video of Sniper. Yes, that is to be changed, no doubt. So my offer would be either to wait when I will send him a new bolt for his breech or to buy a 10 shot repeater breech from me to change it and turn single shot Matador into multyshot. He can choose himself.

As for the price of EDgun and Cricket — that is quite silly to apply to me based on the price criteria and the “quality view” of the guns. Tastes differ as you know. He thinks Cricket is better for lower price — that is his view, I consider that EDgun is better thus the price is higher, that is my view (an many others who buy EDguns for “abnormal” price). That is free market and as we know there are alway too dummies at the market — one who buys expensively, the other who sell cheaply 🙂

Sorry, I didn’t add “when it is ready” 🙂

No you did not………. 😥

That said, – when it becomes available and if it works as intended, – you may expect a serious “avalange” of orders I think, – and also you may find yourself with a serious “bug-killer” 😉

This comparison thread is not dead yet !!!!

Interesting times ahead………

Cheers
Trygve 😀
