Freedom 8 – air compressor
Do you guys use this product? I’ve heard it works alright, but does it last? Anything that is on for 8-12 hours straight has to have duty cycle concerns. I appreciate your feedback and alternatives for about the same price.

Yes its electronic. Shuts down the pump at 4500psi. I use N2 to feed my SBF8 so I don’t have to worry about moisture. Here’s a pic of my setup

I have the older version that OldGoat sent me. I LOVE-IT! I too can get fills at the local fire station, but they give me a lot of grief if the Chief isn’t there. And it is a long trip from here. So no hassle is a good thing. 😉
I have never had one minutes worth of trouble with it. (Hope i didn’t just jinx it.) 😆
KnifeMaker
Is that with the electronic shutoff switch? The mechanical automated switch on mine is loud but reliable. Between the pre compressor (I have the 150 psi Porter Cable) and the mechanical switch you want a headset if you are near it.
I bought mine from Joe B. along with a tank. He’ll knock off $50 if you buy a tank at the same time. He will match prices too 😉
I have one of those 30″ blue Canadian automotive air tool dryers. It’s big but works great and is reasonable to purchase compared to some. 😛
I love it! You will need to get nice dryer and you are set to go.
I bought my Freedom 8 directly from Toms website.

Thanks Tang. I’ve seen that you can order the compressor direct from the shoebox website. I would think you could get the newest model without the bugs from that site. I think the prices are the same as well.
As Coda said..it’s one of the best accessories you can get. You frown and debate about it in the beginning but once you pull the trigger you’ll be happy you did. I have the newer version that comes with a belt drive and auto-shut off valve. Tom has had some issues with some of his new ones, but like people say he’s dedicated to customer service and should you have any issues he will address them quickly. He posted on the Yellow not too long ago that he’s found the issue and will send you a replacement part even if aren’t currently having an issue.

That reminded that I can get free air at my local firehouses. The same capt has control of three firehouses that surround me and he said I am welcome at all of them. Being independent is still best though and every time I went over there to fill they wanted to talk for at least as hour and even bring one of my guns one time (which I made them get a note from the captn lol). I used to lube them with Krispy Kreme’s occasionally – you get more bees with honey. They are a good backup just in case.
The rural firehouses are a lot more friendly than the city ones I have heard.
Thank you guys for both of your opinions. I already have 2 high pressure steel scuba tanks. I’ll still need a 4500 psi tank though. What else would I need to get from Joe B to get me started. Not sure what comes with the matador and not sure what to ask for. Is Joe B familiar with everything I need for it?
I have the original Shoebox compressor. Best PCP accessory one can purchased imo. I use it to top off two 44 cu ft SCBA fireman tanks to 4500 psi. I only replace the orings about once a year (that is about 2.5 hours top off time per fill not 12 and maybe 25 runs a year). I think I paid $550 about two years ago so $10 per fill but dropping every fill. Works like a champ and I know some folks share one. Other than orings I’ve never had a problem which is normal maintenance for these. Parts are cheap and easy to replace. Maybe 30 minutes for orings once you have done it. Fabulous customer support. Tom will do everything for you if you want to pay. Slow compared to a much more expensive Bauer which I nearly bought for $3500. They need maintenance as well but I would say it is about ten times faster fill times. That is important on the very first fill which can take 12 hours depending on your tank size. After that you just do top offs from maybe 3000 psi to 4500 psi.
All of my fill accessories are from Joe B.
I seriously looked in to buying one. Up here in Bangor Maine I had a very hard time finding a source of HPA or Nitrogen. The welding / gas supply shops wanted an arm and leg for nitrogen bottles, dive shops were reluctant to fill for airgunning and the LTs and Capts at the fire departments flat out said no (shoulda brought donuts). The only reasons I didnt get one was because of the price first as I was saving to get my first Edgun and secondly, everyone I spoke with said to stay away from them as they require rebuilding quite often. I finally found a dive shop (DownEast Dive Shop) that would help me out. Bought a couple SCUBA tanks and picked up an HPA booster to try and get more fills from the bottles. Just started using that setup and Ive filled my Condor SS 6 times up to 2900 psi from my first bottle and still going. Setup seems like it should give me about 30 fills or so off one SCUBA.
Some of the guys on here who have the Freedom 8 seem to really like them. My sugestion would be to do research on all your options and see which fits your pocket book and lifestyle best. Look around and see what you have in your area. A good person to talk to has been Joe Brancato from http://www.airtanksforsale.com
