What would be a good choice for a first time pistol owner? Self defense/competition $400. $500. range

yes you do have a bigger diameter bullet so more shock power etc but look at ammo prices and the 9mm is the way to go in my book
if i want knock down power and not plinking im goin with 10MM for auto and 44mag or hotload 357 in revolver 2 times the power of a 45 or 9 or 40
i understand that hydrostatic shock is there but for that ill go with a 10mm and then the 9mm for plinkin etc
10MM is good caliber. But look around for good 10mm ammo before you decide to get one and then shoot both.

That is where experience trumps math.
It is not FPE that is key . Read up on some stuff by Mossad Ayoob and study up on Hydrostatic shock and penetration. You can find him on Youtube as well.
There is a reason it is so popular among law enforcement, military and citizenship who know stopping effectiveness.

the hipoint is rated for all +P and if it gets cracked or anything it has a full lifetime warranty no questions asked
my buddy shoots his hipoint with hot hand loads and +P only over 3000 rds no issues yet
the 40 is still in line with power as a 9mm

But to tell the truth I have always been a airgunner and years of shooting powder burners and reloading it just got old. And most have been loaned out or sit in a gun box.
not near as many as the number of Glocks that have been blown to kingdom shit by the round…
the 10mm really has not damaged any of the Delta’s but there have been tore to hell guns that were conversions on modified Essex or other 2nd rate frames

I don’t know about the 10mm grip frame being all that larger, the Delta was built on the 1911 frame and I have known plenty of 5 foot nothing females that were damn good with that weapon.
ones I tend to dislike even with my large hands are the Berettas
yes the .40 & the .357 Sig can be hand loaded to do some interesting things but that’s besides the point. I was hand loading .380 to 9mm performance years ago for the Remington P51 I had
as far as the Sig is concerned I’ll take a .38 Super Any Day over the Sig
Yes the 10mm tosses brass, so do nearly all magnum auto loaders. With hot loads my AutoMags could fling a case twenty or more feet. Rapped my girlfriend at the time hard enough to raise a lump on her forehead.
My general outlook is if you want a magnum buy a magnum
if you want a plinker…buy that too
but its bad policy to try and hand load a plinker into a magnum
one exception to that is Parabellums, the pistol, not the round
you can seriously hot load a Luger, much of the reliability issues are simply due to the pistol having been designed around much much more powerful ammunition than we produce in the USA due to liability concerns
Years back Val Forget of Navy Arms brought in a mess of Czech 9mm ammo that was loaded for the CZ23/24 submachine guns. Problem was folks were cracking frames even on Browning P35 High Powers!
I Bought every bit I could find at the time at around $50.00 acase as it was the only loading that would reliably cycle my Artillery Luger
but most cant handle the 10mm , a full house 10 mm is about the same recoil as a 41 mag. and dam do they trow the cases. ( i hate picking up cases)

yeah i really looked into a sig also but ammo availability sucked
