What would be a good choice for a first time pistol owner? Self defense/competition $400. $500. range

.40 is an awesome round. You can load it hot and get into the light 10mm stuff. 10mm is super expensive, not as easy to find and takes longer to get back on target. 10mm also has a bigger grip for guys like me with small hands. For defense I like .45 but I went with a XD .40 compact for concealed carry.
You can also buy 357 sig barrels for just about any .40 gun AND you can usually buy 9mm barrels for cheaper plinking ammo.

What happened was DOJ adopted the 10mm round a number of years back mostly in the Colt Delta platform based on the redoubtable 1911.
Problem was DOJ had been infiltrated by all manner of skinny wimmin folk who whined about the piece’s recoil so the Marshals Service and FBI for a time allowed the whiners to pack even .32’s and .380s in liu of the issue sidearm.
Anyways some bean counter contacted S&Ws R&D division requesting a 10mm round with less recoil, all S&W did was to reduce case length to that suitable for a 9mm sized frame then soft load the round to basically similar to that of the 19th century .38-40 WCF. The web at the base of the case was as well thinned up to allow an extra grain or two of propellant
S&W figured they had a winner to take market share back from Glock in LE sales however Glock of America had acquired some samples of once fired .40 S&W cases straight out of the S&W factory and brought the Glock 22 to market months ahead of S&W first .40 offering
The .40 has been Sooooo over hyped and much of its selling points again is due to folks mistakenly assuming that if LEOs are issued the round it has to be totally magnificent
Know several officers who have front line experience with the .40 and each of them cited lack of true stopping power compared even to some 9mm loads

I did not know 10mm was for hunting, thus why I am asking questions.
I will try shooting both 9mm and .40, next time I go to the range.

well 40 is great self defence round
i went with 9mm due to cheaper ammo
and i think a 147 grain JHP will knock this shit outta someone with a chest shot
plus less recoil in the 9mm
but 10 is a hunting cartridge lol or like stated full sized frame gun cart

Only 9mm if the frame size of the gun is to small for the .40, or 45. or if your a real bad shot and need the capacity.
The 40 is almost perfect power level for people,less recoil time in the air and more time on target , and you get more capacity with the auto’s.than 45.

Really it’s all about you , how you want to use it , carry it, how much you want to spend, if your not going to reload, how much do you want to practice, (AMMO COST)
Now the hot debate 9mm, 10mm, or .40 for self defense.
I like the Ruger MKIII Hunter with the 6.88″ barrel for target. The charger is nice to but I may as well get a rifle at that point.
I thought the 500 was a big old pussy cat. I have loads in a super black hawk 44 that will beat you harder.
The big 500 is so heavy and was compensated. so all you have is a shit load of noise and a big push.
the little m. 60 that i put the picture up of will hurt you with hot 357’s.
I owned the Raging Bull for a while. First let me say that I reloaded my own smoking hot 44 mags for years before buying the Raging Bull. I would blast a couple hundred rounds a week end in the quarry. I used shooting gloves with padding in the palm. I shot such hot loads out of my Ruger 44 mag that I would tap the cylinger with a rubber mallot to open the cylinder! nOW TO THE POINT . the Raging Bull Taurus is a ridiculous firearm to shoot! I reloaded for that as well. I wore two pair of ear plugs, the foam ones inside the headphones. I wore my shooting gloves. I am 6’2″ 250 lbs and that gun sucks to shoot! The ground shakes! Having a muzzle break did not help I am sure with the noise. buy a .357 revolver and practice with .38’s most people can handle a .;357 mag

i dont know that 10mm is exactly a hunting round but most resarch i did on it was its a capable hunting round for auto pistols
and yes the damn sissy LEO’s couldnt handle the 10mm recoil
i had the gunshop order me a glock 22 in 10mm but i canclled and am saving up for the desert eagle with the 3 bbls(357,44mag and 50AE)
357 sig is nice but ammo is pricey and brass harder to come by if ya reload
i stuck with 9 for now as i can get 1000 round FMJ for 210 shipped
thats good for practice and then buy the 147 grain Defence bullets that are 25 bucks for 25 but are really accurate in my gun and also expand wicked
