Q:

Let’s talk a little bit about ST barrels

When Ted uploaded his MOA group at 100y some of his pellets were wobbling, and at least one was flat out spiraling. FRANK uploaded a video of his Impact shooting at 90 yards and a few of his pellets are spiraling/wobbling too.

How come? Is seems to be common in Smooth Twist barrels to spiral pellets, very discouraging.

Ken: Maybe your new to air gunning if you don’t know Ted Holdover or AirArmsHuntingSA to name a couple whom shoot ST barrels 100 yards and past. And as mention before TonTonDoogy split a poker card at 100 yards with his bobcat. Tell me one reference of a CZ barrel on youtube at or over 100 yards.

I be not now on PCP, i be now on the English speaking forums because my english is not very good.
I be now over +20 years in the Firearm hobby and vor +8 years in the PCP world.

I had a lot of PCPs/barrels and i know what i am talking about, trust me.
I also know +95% of al PCP videos on YT.

Please look on YT for: “KalibrGun Cricket long shot” or “Edgun long range shooting” “Vulcan PCP long range”,… i hope you know what i am mean.

I also have a ton of Videos from amasing long range shooting by my self, but i show it nobody because i made it only vor me.
But here is a 10 shoot group from my R3m Matador .22 at 100 Yards, outdoore by light wind and rain. I can make such groups every time.

!WTF! Sniperqty AirGun have stolen my Avatar!!! :suprisedn: :suprisedn:
LOL good man

In the last two weeks SniperQty posted several FX vs CZ barrel videos.

For example: cz barrel vs smooth twist barrel 40 yard p1

quote Wingman NZ:

I have done all these tests leading up to the selection of a barrel for my .25cal 34gr long range MOA project.
All barrels I tested were fitted to the same regulated PCP on the same day and cut to the same length (22″)
I shot over chrono’s at 50m and 100m to get very accurate figures of B.C and velocity retention.
I also shortened the barrels 1/2″ down to 18″ at a time and the figures remained very much the same.
I am not going to release all the velocity and BC variations here as last time I spoke about it I upset a few people but I will list them for you in order of performance best to worst.

BSA
CZ
Lother Walther (very close to CZ)
FX smooth twist

Something I learned very fast was the faster you push a pellet down a FX S/T the worse it got. I can only pin that on the pellet stripping of lead through the S/T section of rifling and it having an effect on twist rate and stability

I have settled on an 18″ hammer forged BSA barrel an have learned never attempt to shoot a smooth twist barrel over a chronograph at 100m again :confusedn:

quote Wingman NZ:

Order of accuracy was

Bsa
L/W
CZ

FX S/T

However the experiment was not to test accuracy so to speak.. Too many variables for that one, pellet head size v/s choke size, wind etc.. They all had room to improve and would with carefull pellet selection.
I will share more info once the new prototype .25 bench rest build is completed.

Sniperqty has taken many shots with his Cricket, longest was a balloon at 410 yards

Yeah it only took him 6 shots to hit it, and God knows where the other five shots went, So that is not an example of Accuracy could be seen as luck, or good odds.

So it doesn’t put you off? You’re fine with a “legendary” barrel the you know produces spiraling/wobbly pellets every now and then?

Cricket thanks for throwing Freeman out there i am familiar with his stuff, haven’t seen him for a while, yes he has done some good hunting at 100 yards +. But he doesn’t do grouping at long ranges just hunting as does Matt so that is a plus 1 for CZ and legendary barrels thanks. All my guns are legendary barrels and i think they are great as well, I am not saying ST is better, i’m just not saying ST is WORSE either. And as far as spiral being ok, its not but many things can cause spiral its not a fact its due to the barrels. or the twist ratio.

Now let me start off by saying i don’t own a ST barrel yet but I do see one in my inventory in the near future. With that said i’ve seen hundreds of videos thru the scope cam of Ton Ton Doogy, Matt, and Ted all shooting ST barrels at distances 100-130 yards with incredible shots on match sticks, head and heart & lung shots on pest., and sub MOA groups at 100 yards. Yes i’ve seen some pellet spiraling (not a lot but it is there) and still yeilding the desire out come. Now as far as Lother Wather barrels and CZ barrel i’ve maybe see less that a handful of scope cam footage showing there accuracy. Now i’ve heard thousands of stories of this accuracy, and i know how great and shitty my CZ barrels can be at times first hand. But to say one is better or worse because you have one or two of each is just crazy talk.

ST barrels accurate at short ranges and maybe a little bit accurater than normal barrels, but i have no seen a video from a ST barrel that shoot accurate at long range.
Long range is for me +100 yard, and on YT you fount a lot of videos from LW and CZ barresl shot up to +350 yards with unbelievable accuracy!

Forgot to mention +350 yards with a airgun and accurate shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same paragraph unless you consider accurate being 2 meters by 2 meters

The popularity of FX barrels has also to do with big-guns like Ted promoting them, it certainly helps. Also, FX Boss’ won or were in the top ranks at the Extreme Bench-rest. These may also help explain the number of videos on them.

My understanding is that the ST barrel seals better around the pellet, but I also wonder if spin-up (rotation/inertia) may not be as consistent and stable as a pellet from a grooved barrel. Didn’t Yrrah do some comparison of spin rates for each type?

Oh, and if you want to see scope cam footage of a Cricket with CZ barrel check out Freemanshooting on youtube.
