Let’s talk a little bit about ST barrels

When Ted uploaded his MOA group at 100y some of his pellets were wobbling, and at least one was flat out spiraling. FRANK uploaded a video of his Impact shooting at 90 yards and a few of his pellets are spiraling/wobbling too.

How come? Is seems to be common in Smooth Twist barrels to spiral pellets, very discouraging.

What are these “ST pellets”? Never heard of those.

I have the ST Pellets and they are not so accurate as the JSB in my ST barrels,…

The ST is a cheaper manufactured polygon barrel and Polygon barrel
are not as accurate at longe range as normal barrels.
That knows every powder burner shooter.

The polygon barrels are very accurate at low range and therefore it will used in handguns.
Glock as example.

Interesting, I don’t trust st barrels that’s for sure

Lets stop and think about how the ST line of barrels works here for a second.

The pellet is already traveling at max velocity or slightly above, then enters the rifled portion
spinning the pellet. The spin is more of a torquing motion then a rotation, anyways the idea
is to spin the pellet so that it reaches maximum rotation speed as it exits the barrel theoretically
providing the most stable flight trajectory, BUT when said pellets velocity exceeds that of rotational stability
OR doesn’t exit the barrel exactly the same way every time, IE deformed skirt/head, squished, deformed head shape,
It could explain the wobble or keyhole phenomena we have been seeing.

Now with a standard barrel the rifling engagement the entire time it spends in the barrel could be correcting some of the irregularity’s
in the pellet shape and could be more stable as its been spinning the same speed through its time inside the barrel
so rather then rely on instantaneous torque stabilization you have a more balanced gyroscopic forces so the crown makes a bigger
difference to allow the pellet to exit the barrel cleanly and evenly VS accelerating the rotation at the end of the barrel

just my thoughts on this, been a theory ive had for a while now.

as a comparison, spin a bicycle wheel. its hard to rotate against its natural generated gravity, however when a second persons spins
the wheel for you, its easy to persuade the wheel as rotational stabalization hasnt occurred yet.

so persuasion of the wheel as its being spun is like a st barrel, vs already spinning stability is the standard barrel.

I did see this on Ted’s video, looked very noticeable on multiple shots.

Surely this means if you moved the gun back even an inch from the point it was zero’d your POI would be off?

I know that’s assuming the pellet is spiralling the exact same every time but then if the gun’s extremely consistent it may be?

Let’s say it’s possible the pellet can spiral the same every time, you could zero the gun and the POI would be the same but move the gun back or forth a tiny amount and the pellet could strike at a different point in it’s spiral.

I’ve read a lot on ST barred and really don’t like the idea myself. Even the Wildcat Facebook group has a fair few instances of owners moaning about accuracy.
