Q:

Mutant Shorty Need Any Extra Sound Supression…

:hoot:

Is the moderator end cap on the Mutant held on with a grub screw, or threaded?

If set at max fps, does it need additional sound suppression to be “Neighborhood Unnoticeable??

Kind regards Fellow Mutants….

I don’t want/need any more power or noise but I would be up for better efficiency and a higher shot count. 😉 Mine is very quiet at 800 fps with 18.1s and has plenty of power at 25-26 FPE.

Hey u SECoda,

Get in touch with that Dman and try out that “Swiss cheese pre-charge space upgrade” u should get a 15-20 fps increase and higher shot count with it installed.
His new valve shaft slim down will also help u achieve your needs Sir.

With just the spacer alone filled to 220 bar I’m getting 4 mags = 48 regulated shot with 16g @ 820fps.

My Shorty 22 will starts to bark like a bitch in heat starting at 800 fps and up with JSB 18g …….

The scope is a SWFA 3-15×42 FFP side focus. Scope is pretty nice, but my only complaint is there’s no illumination for dawn/dusk hunts. Other than that she has very nice glass & I can see my poi @ 100 meters at 15X.

My next scope for the Shorty is prob this Sig Sauer 4-16×44 FFP (with Illumination) w/ some nightforce Ultralite rings.

Very nice huge crows there Sir…

Usually whenever I sit down to test/chrony the Shorty those pesky squarrels are so curious they seem like they want to get shot (another “hat trick” w/ a header & 2 heart stoppers)…

Thx 4 the info, with the phone.

Good shooting Tex, a Mutant, killed by a Mutant lol.
I’ve seen rabbits with antlers before but, that’s ridiculous.

What kind of scope is that. 🙄
Here is my best work with the shorty. Three black chickens down lol.
The birds are bigger than the gun is.

Foxback,

You know you can download a decibel sound meter app on your Apple/Android cell phone for free. I know it’s not a professional decibal sound meter product but it can give you a ballpark test measurement for multiple guns.

I agree w/ you about the background noise while shooting the Shorty. I shoot her at home, work, basically anywhere out of my truck. She’s just way to easy to shoot resting her on my drivers side window. There’s barely any recoil when shooting her at all. Being quiet as she is even the squarrels don’t know where the sound report is coming from so you do get a chance of mutiple head shot kills.

Check out the Texas Mutant Sabertooth Squarrel (top squarrel) pictured…Ive shot over hundreds of squarrels in my life, but this was the 1st…

Indeed, the Shorty is amazing…

This is turning into a great & informative post on the shorty.
The Taipan part of this form has been dead for the last week.

Mine gives 30 shots @ 29-30 fpe I don’t have a way too test the sound of mine.
But I’m thinking it’s around the 82 dB mark at most. I don’t think it needs any help with the sound at all. Shooting at 30 fpe, any back ground noise at all, you’ll never hear it.

I’ve sniped crows out of trees, with people standing around talking, close by.
I mean like @ 30 yards.
They never knew any thing was going on at all.

For what this little gun does, not just mine but all Taipan shortys,
it’s amazing in my book. :suprisedn:

Foxback,

You have powerful lil gun there shooting @ 29-30 ft lbs. What’s the estimate of your shot count on a full fill @ that power level? I’m sure the swiss cheese & modified valve stem can increase the damage on critters for sure. I’m wondering about the sound report also at that power level…please let us know…

Here is my test card I got with the gun.

Not sure if the shorty is maxed out, at this point of what Jaime has said & found on the shorty’s.

I still have not used the reg spacer in mine yet.
I still don’t want too mess to much with the gun.
If I need to change o-rings, and get in side the gun, I’ll get the new valve stem from Jaime
& swap out the reg spacer.

But 850- 860 is 29-30 fpe at this point, thats really good for this little gun.

I would like to see my little mutant 22 at about 920 Fps Can it be done.
Not sure I have the swiss cheese in mine are not? I know I do not have the 1/2 x20 adapter with the gun,
It did have one but I think the third party kept it,
I like the higher FPS if the accuracy is there as I feed most of my Varmints that I shoot to my pets , And if the pellet does not except I have to go digging for it,
Mike

Normally the shortt out of the box does like 810 maybe 820 with 18.1s…

By reworkING a few parts… 860 fps can be achieved.

With regulator pressure at around 145 bar. ( factory setting)

The valve stem needs shaping… Swiss cheese the regulator spacer… then open up the T port and reshape and polish it..

Foxback,

Your question, “kabukicrack did you test over a for power, what kind of fps did you gain?
Maybe 10-15 fps?”

To tell you the truth, I assembled everything once I received everything, and went to test over the chrony… my Caldwell chrony told me ~810 fps +-3 for 10 shots & I was very happy…I didnt want to change anything…

Dman told me his set up was about the same & if I remember correctly, he mentioned he was blasting 18.1g pellets in the 850-860 fps range…

Uncle Hoot,

“What the hell is a “swiss cheeses reg spacer” and “modified valve stem”???”

The items pictured are what I received from Dman…(Dman’s regulator tester, Shorty 1 piece fill probe, my modified barrel & valve stem, & the swiss cheese regulator spacer)

Is the OEM valve stem defective??? Why swiss cheese for the spacer????

The oem valve spring works great…but Dman’s modified valve spring is even better…same w/ Dman’s swiss cheese spacer…

I’m sure Dman can contribute his expertise coming soon…

Hoot here is a pic of the swiss cheese regulator spacer.

As u can see, it’s not made from cheese at all, they are lying too you.

It’s a way too get more air too use, for power.
I had ask Jaime if he could make a new shaped valve stem, for more power also.
I guess he is now.

kabukicrack did you test for power on the stem, what kind of fps did you gain?
Maybe 10-15 fps? 🙄

Uncle Hoot,

“How do I get Dman’s swiss cheese regulator spacer and modified valve stem installed?”

Very easy…ask/pm Dman very nicely w/ a pretty please w/ cheese…

“Do I send him a Shorty?”

I disassembled my Shorty, & sent Dman my Shorty valve stem & barrel for some extra “magic machining”…

“He does this for free doesn’t he???”

Haha…you really need to talk to the Dman…I’ll tell you something though, turn around time is very fast.
