Q:

Mutant Shorty on the way?

I just received an email from fedex that I have a delivery from Charles Frear and referenced by Topgun. I’m assuming it’s the mutant I ordered.

Is Charles Frear a dealer for Topgun? I’m confused…

What every the case, I’m looking forward to having in my hands sometime next week.

I’m going to mount a Clearidge 3-9 mildot scope on it.

I see on TGAG that a CZ barrel (the manufacturer, not the country)is listed as a $75.00 upgrade, and the the price of the Short has gone up a few bucks. I’d guess the pre-order period is over. I’m not versed enough to know why the fascination with the forged barrel, but I did do some poking around the web to try to educate myself. In the process I learned about Button-rifling, and cut-rifling as well as hammer-forged rifling (which is the most expensive process due to tooling costs, and so typically left to the larger houses that can take and turn out volume orders economically). I have not come across anything that says a hammer-forged barrel is inherently more accurate that a button-rifled barrel or a cut-rifled barrel. btw CZ stands for Ceska
Zbrojovka Firearms in Uhersky Brod, Czech Republic.
I’ve read a few statements here that make me at least question my ordering of the Short with a barrel made in the Czech Republic. Too, Petr has told me he’s done business with that barrel maker before, and that it uses the same process as does Lothar Walther for making barrels. I can’t confirm what Petr told me because I don’t know the name of that company (didn’t ask). I did research LW’s barrel-making process, and it is the button-rifling process. From all I’ve read about barrel-making, a lot depends on the actual people working on the barrels. Further searches reveal opinions that a barrel of any of these processes can be made to be accurate. Everyone has an opinion. Some say hammer-forged are more accurate, and some say cut-rifling is more accurate over long distances, with button-rifling coming in a close second. Some political wag says either of the three is more accurate (if made well). than the shooter can manage. An interesting Wiki article on rifling here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rifling

I still don’t know what I’ll ultimately do. I’m looking for data to help me make up my mind. Need a little help. If I receive a Short that can do MOA out to 75 yards will I be happy? Well…yeah. Am I good enough to make a 5-shot MOA group at 75 yards? Not yet, but I’d hope the rifle was capable of that so I could grow (my shooting skill) into it. So will I go ape-shit if the barrel isn’t made by CZ but rather is made in the Czech Republic? If it’s more accurate than I am i don’t if it’s made in the Check~and~Go. Should I be concerned?

A link to an interesting barrel-making aritcle: http://riflebarrels.com/the-making-of-a-rifle-barrel/ I”m trying to learn something to help me sort through so many opinions.

Soooooo what dealer(s) are you ordering them from and why? (Petr vs Charlie) It sounds like there is quite a back log at least one dealer? (three dozen) Where is the best place to get one that is accurate and asap? Sounds like some competition going on and still some barrel supply issues (trickling in). Thanks for the info. It seems this hobby never changes. 😆

Irde better have your rabbits foot in your pocket and toss some salt over your shoulder as well with that one. CZ barrel. L0L

I paid an extra 75 dollars to make sure I got CZ barrel,
Whats the deal,?

O yea
Never mind!

You bust up, any birds with yours yet? 🙄

Oh yes I have one, I’m waiting on one of Jamie’s next shipment barrels, I also just sent out my 15mm LW blank for machining yesterday. So hopefully I’ll have two great barrels and I’m thinking of scoring another shorty in need of a good barrel, like someone else here did. LOL

Have a dman Listone Special I don’t need a CZ barrel.

I can tell you they won’t have a CZ barrel. The dealer that sells the mutant ran out of barrels. Want anymore information you’ll have to call me.

The Mutant dealers made a huge mistake in my opinion. They should have bought Listone barrels after my review and fixed the problem. Everyone who has a Dman barrel is really happy with it. I called the dealers before my review video went on line. Guess they thought I was full of shit
