My .25 Vulcan
Well it is officially 7:30 am here in West Central Wisconsin. My Vulcan is being pulled off the Postal truck now and will be available for pick up at the post office when they open. Plan is to head out to my buddy’s place and strap the MTC Viper Connect on top, get her dialed in and hit the woods for a squirrel hunt. Saturday was opener here and he and I bagged 9 Greys and a fat hopper with the Disco and my .25 Prod. (Pics to come)I figure I’ll deal with all the crony stuff a bit later today and get to drawing some blood first. Probably just dial in with light Kings firs as the seem to be a good pellet in the Vulcan from what I have read…too ready been too long…can’t wait I’m like a kid on Christmas! :7: :8:

So where did you put the oring with Ernest’s guide installed? Over the spring and guide or towards the rear just over the spring?

Here’s my take on this mod…
The 5/8ths OD O-ring is the way to go…if you can find them in your local store. If not, I suggest going on-line to get them. It’s worth the effort.
I believe, after trying the O-ring by itself, and adding Ernest’s hammer spring guide later, that the O-ring reduces 90-95% of the vibration induced “Pinggggg” we hear. It is a simple harmonic sound produced by continued hammer spring vibration. The O-ring, like the keys/dampers on a piano, simply stop the vibration after it starts…almost immediately. It has to start before the O-ring can do it’s job, so don’t expect it to be 100% effective by itself.
After installing Ernest’s hammer spring guide, I believe it helps, but perhaps in a different manner. Either one will help stop the hammer spring vibration and harmonic sound that results. But, I believe Ernest’s delrin guide keeps that spring straight when being compressed. I believe over time that will pay benefits in spring life.
There’s a place for both of these addition/changes, and no harm results from their use.
Given a choice, I’d suggest the O-ring mod first for immediate results on the pinging noise. I’d do the Ernest delrin as a longer term insurance for consistency, and it also helps with that last few milliseconds of ping noise. Used by itself it would help reduce the ping…but I’d go with the O-ring first.
I wouldn’t worry about where that O-ring travels after being used. It’s going to move up and down the spring as it does it’s job. There’s room in there for two O-rings…I stayed with one. Perhaps as we gain experience we might find a second O-ring will benefit…perhaps not. It depends if the spring vibration is so strong as to move one O-ring into a non-dampening position, we shall see.
A final word…don’t expect that last 1/4″ of cocking knob resistance to ever go away. If it does, you likely have a breech O-ring missing or otherwise compromised.
At this point, I’m hard pressed to find any further mods for the Vulcan. It’s got just about every feature needed for it’s design.

FM, I have nothing on mine yet and it has not moved at all. I’m going to try the 3/8″ x 5/8″ like Hooters did.
They have a oring in the threads of hammer spring screw that makes it harder to turn on its own. Mine has not moved so it must be working

Is there anything in place to keep the hammer spring for moving over the course of time and changing your tune? I don’t see you and we set screws or anything of that nature
Ben, use a blow torch on screws it helps to loosen them. I just finger tighten them and no more………………………only kidding on the blow torch. 😆
So, it is now in and under the grommet? Or did you move the grommet towards the back?

I put Ernest’s guide in after I took this photo.
When you remove those screws, simply tap the top of the hex wrench to ensure it’s firmly seated in the hex screw. Then you should have no problem. When putting them back, don’t over tighten them. Go to the screw’s stop and then a slight nudge tighter, no more.

where is the part ernest sent you in the photo? Shouldn’t it be under the spring where the grommet is?
I picked up a pack of 2 of the 3/8 ID X 5/8 OD grommets at Lowes on the way home ($1.04 + tax). Hope to install it and Ernest’s part this weekend. Really worried about those small screws.

Here is a picture for you to look at. Note the 3/8″ Grommet is 5/8th” OD and it is a great fit. No movement, easy to install, fits great, and cost .47 cents US.
The larger grommet is a 1″ OD and needs to be ground to fit. I found the 5/8th” OD in a bin of loose grommets at the hardware store. You buy them by bulk, or individually.

PS: Someone hacked my UPS account and ran up a $635 shipping bill on me. I just changed my password. Perhaps some of you guys should do so as well. 75lb package was shipped from Canada to Bronx, NY. UPS on on it, and the charge removed. Looks like they use one or two day premium shipping so they can get the package and be gone before the account is noted as compromised.
Hoot 3/8″ by what, what was the OD you blind bat!! I had Villes Connect on my 300 Win Mag and no problem at all…………………………………………But I didn’t pull the trigger!

I was at a hardware store yesterday and found you can get those grommets with a 3/8th ID in a much smaller OD (Outside Diameter) so you don’t have to cut down the outside to get it to fit. I’ll post some pics later today if my vision clears up and I can see what I’m doing. I got Ernest’s hammer spring guide and I’m really curious to find out how much difference these two mods make. Venting the shroud has really reduced the muzzle blast, so this is the last step in noise abatement.

As you view the hammer spring…there is an opening forward, toward the valve, where the hammer spring is most exposed and open. This seems to be an ideal place to put the O-ring.
If you go more towards the rear, it gets crowded and the small indexer spring that goes over the hammer spring gets in the way. Just forward of that little spring was the most open place. That gives the O-ring a bit of room to move back and forth as it dampens the vibration.
