New Jersey Gun Law and Talon SS

I just purchased a Talon SS from Pyramid Air which was delivered to a firearms dealer in NJ recently. When I went to pickup the rifle I was told it was illegal in NJ and I had to exchange the rifle. According to the dealer the rifle is considered a sawed-off-shotgun due to it’s barrel lenngth. Any shotgun with a barrel length under 18 inches or rifle with a barrel lenth under 16 inches is considered a sawed-off-shotgun which is illegal in NJ. In NJ all BB\Pellet airguns atre considered a firearm. Barrel length is measured from breach to muzzle.
As the dealer said he recently discovered this through research can anyone verify or deny this law?
Does anyone own a Talon SS in NJ?
Considering this law as valid. What would be my best option as an exchange? I plan on using only in back yard for target and plinking. I had ordered a .177. Pyramid Air mentioned possibly ordering a larger barrel. I would have to see if the dealer is willing to replace the barrel.

Except that the laws quoted say you cant silence it in any way.

Each state has it’s own oddness.
Louisiana:
No person shall take or kill any game bird or wild quadruped with a firearm fitted with any device to deaden
or silence the sound of the discharge thereof; or fitted with an infrared sight, electrically operated sight or
device specifically designed to enhance vision at night {R.S. 56:116.1B(3)}.
It shall be illegal to hunt or take squirrel or rabbits at any time with a breech-loaded rifle or
handgun larger than a .22 caliber rimfire or a primitive firearmlarger than a .36 caliber.
At no place does it mention airgun, so will have to assume it’s meant to be a universal law covering all types of projectile weapons.
The “sound deadening” might apply to a TalonSS and the caliber restriction, even though stated a .22RF, might be cause for concern for .25 fans.

Gun laws in California really are not all that bad. We have gun stores everywhere and a waiting period. Guns that have been banned have been replaced with modified versions…Big deal.
So can you purchase one of the numerous airguns that already come with factory installed silencers on them?
Maybe on the Fed level, but it’s clear that states get to make their own rules, superseding the Fed laws
I thought that Airguns CANNOT be defined as Firearms under any circumstances as outlined by Federal Law and the ATF’s own rulings?

I ran screaming out of NJ about 30 years ago, cause the gun laws were screwed up beyond believe (along with about 70% of the population), can’t think they’ve gotten any better since.
People complain and ridicule California about it’s gun laws, but NJ and Massachusetts are just as bad.

Unless NJ laws are really screwed up, why did you have it shipped to a dealer? I’d have simply had it shipped to your home address…..

I never thought I would live to see the day an air gun was regulated in the U.S.
And to think of all the vets that have fought and died for our “freedom” only to have some punk politician remove our freedoms with a stroke of a pen!!!

If it is, I would go with an SS with a 18″ barrel and then add a shroud from Don as it only adds a couple of inches, but is super quiet, no one will know you are plinking (much, much quieter than a stock SS
Here in Michigan, any airgun with a rifled barrel that’s under 30′ long (overall length, not just the barrel) requires a permit to purchase, an FFL transfer and inspection/test firing by the local police. Basically, the exact same procedure that’s used to buy a handgun.
Over 30 inches, you can buy them by the truckload and the state couldn’t care less. Delivered straight to your door with absolutely zero paperwork required.
Go figure. 🙄

we all tread a line with our “shrouds” but there are definite difficulties for the NJ guys. Can’t even make an argument with airguns being defined as firearms.
g. “Firearm silencer” means any instrument, attachment, weapon or appliance for causing the firing of any gun, revolver, pistol or other firearm to be silent, or intended to lessen or muffle the noise of the firing of any gun, revolver, pistol or other firearm.

I’m with Tron on this one. The Gun Control Act of 1968 specifically prohibits airguns from being considered firearms. That’s how we are able to shoot them in our backyards.
JM, to the Supreme Court you go! Call the NRA and see if they will take the case…or move!
