I believe the .20 caliber is one of the best “all around general purpose” calibers in use today. It has the high velocity of the .117, and the power of a .22 caliber…all this depending on your choice of pellets.
Today, power is seldom a challenge. In the Leyla, a .20 caliber would be an excellent round for all around performance. The availability of different types of .20 caliber pellets used to be a challenge, but I believe today you can get an excellent assortment.
I went .25 because I’m convinced that it will get the job done, if the fpe is close to 25 to 30 fpe.
If it doesn’t have enough punch, I’ll raise velocity by using the 16gr, 25 caliber Beeman Laser pellets, the H&N 19.91gr Field Target Trophy pellets, or the BSA, Pylarm 18.6 pellets. This wide assortment of pellet weights available in .25 caliber should give me a wide range of choices of fps/fpe.
I don’t believe the diameter of the .25 will be a telling factor in the ballistic results if reducing pellet weight increases the velocity significantly. With these light weight pellets, I believe the Leyla can achieve fps near 800 fps. An 8gr to 9gr reduction in weight should have a significant effect over the 25gr JSB pellets Ed will be using for testing the Leyla.
I’ll try them all, light and heavy pellets, and report the results when the Leyla arrives.
Until then, I won’t know how it shoots until it arrives. My thinking is Ed won’t release it if it turns out to be under-powered. He’s never released an under-powered pcp as of today.
When they do arrive, I look forward to a variety of testing, comments, shot strings, and accuracy from the four available calibers coming later this year. Lots of data to crunch then, and mods to consider!!!

where as I agree with your post and I am not trying to “rain on your parade” I figured you gave this a lot of thought due to your quite public affection for the Leyla. I thought about pre-ordering a .25 from Tony but I was worried about the pellet’s trajectory due to the gun’s optimal lower velocity. I understand horses for courses as well. I watch a lot of pellet gun stuff on youtube and a lot of shooters in the UK complain about the 25 “lobbing: the pellet. I have had a couple of internet conversations with them and I discovered their unhappiness stemmed from the 12 foot pound restriction. Most of the airheads in the UK haven’t experienced a 50 foot pound .25 so their view of the pellet is somewhat dismal.
I only ask about your decision because I ordered a .20 Leyla from Tony. I know this is not a long range gun but I like a flat trajectory. Is my thinking off?

Ed indicated he hoped to reach close to 30 fpe.
I can increase fps by simply getting lighter .25 pellets. I already have a few tins of 18/19gr .25 pellets. That’s going to get the fps up over 700 fps.
So, I’m not worried about total power for the distances I shoot, which is at maximum 150 feet from my deck to my neighbor’s furthest chicken. As long as I have a scope that can reach “minute of chicken head”…I’m good to go. Let’s not forget our Brit friends are limited to 12 fpe, and they routinely bag game further than I’ll shoot.
Plus…never has a pcp entered this forum without mods, silencing, power enhancements, etc…etc… Recall this is a single shot gun. If it doesn’t generate the power I want, I’ll get a slightly longer barrel milled for it. adding Two inches yields another 100 fps. I don’t expect to find that necessary. “Power” is a state of mind. There are springs, valve adjustments, regulator adjustments, barrel lengths, transfer ports to enlarge, and the list goes on and on and on. I’m not worried about power.
If Ed can fit a Matador valve in it, then the possibilities are endless. For now, we just have to wait and see what we have to work with. I’m not certain even Ed knows what valve he will use yet. Perhaps he will custom fit a Matador valve in mine for “product testing purposes”, for the day he finds it necessary to issue the .30 caliber Leyla!!!

I’m curious why you would want a .25 Leyla? Ed said the .25 Leyla would be about 25 foot pounds that puts the JSB kings at 665. Do you think that’s enough FPS for such a heavy pellet?

Look like a well placed shot on a now dead black squirrel to me. However it’s a subgroup of the eastern gray squirrel. Found in the Midwestern United States, Northeastern United States, Ontario and Quebec. As rare as I in 10,000 in general. However, some North American cities and colleges has adopted them as a mascot due to their rarity. Damn liberal colleges no doubt, wouldn’t you say Coda :2cents:

Hoot you’ve got a crystal ball! I was born in the Middle East and Kabobs are a favorite. However I don’t eat nutters unless I was in a survival situation. Black squirrels here are everywhere. As a child I remember them being everywhere in Canada but not in the States until later. I have noticed that animals for some odd ass reason won’t touch them. Weird because fox squirrels are always gone the next day.
And ISIS tried taking over the village I was born in Northern Iraq but failed. We don’t fuck around where I’m from 🙂 no joke my grandma will strip a AK blind folded and assemble with no problem.

I was out on a hunting trip with a Lelya .22 over the past few days and it’s a thumper for sure. All shots were under 30m. Some nutters managed to get away due to my old ass not able to sit still, I don’t know. All I’m saying is I’d like a little more thud. All we can do is ask, right? :angrymob: Now if I can sling 10 shots at 40gr in .30, I’d be a happy 🙂
