Q:

project no 4.. bolt action

Hi,
here’s some pic of my latest project. Doesn’t look like much yet… As you can see i havent cut the slot for the mag yet; still on backorder (marauder mag). I plan to build a sort of “inertia hammer”, ad modum Daystate merlin. Airbottle will be a frontmounted 600cc item. Valve design pretty much a Rapid copy.
Thanks

I’ve got an swedish built milling machine, named Mattsson & Zetterlund. Here’s a description of it; http://www.lathes.co.uk/mattsson%26zetterlund/
I don’t use coolant when machining, except when cutting some of the more “sticky” alloys… then i use spray on etanol or WD40.
Regarding spindle speed i actually don’t see the need for higher rpm on my lathe.. also considering that it’s an old piece running in plain bearings.
What i have done is that i use a VFD in order to control spindle speed.
My lathe is something like 60 years old, but i would never trade it for a new china lathe!
thanks

I can agree to that, they don’t make stuff that’s that good any more, I have an old 1952 meuser MKIII, Cuts threads real good, bearings are a bit worn out, but I’m saving up to get a new set of bearings. apperently meuser still makes ‘m but they’re new bearings that are stronger..

the bearings and rpm are probably the only weak points in the old lathes.. I can still take off about 5-6 mm per pass on stainless though, but it’ll start begging me not to by making an annoying sound. 🙂

I also have an old milling machine, A cincinatti toolmaster HV, that thing’ll never go even though it’s huge…

Most older industrial machines do better than most of the new chinese hobby stuff eh?

thanks Eddie!

Super you should be proud of that very nice machine work and thought went into that very very nice! 😆 I was wondering what kind of mill you have? I love working with Aluminum you can really crank up the rpm when machining! makes a mess but machines nice do you use any coolant when machining? I to have a South Bend lathe similar to yours 9″ as yours is, just got up and running this summer had to repair the quick change gear box and a few other minor things nice lathe for home use, have you done anything for higher speeds on your lathe just curious 😯 That is one beautifully built gun for sure!! Here is a picture of my lathe

I like it, I like it a lot!

Hi, sorry for the missing pics! I’ve used up all available space on my free photobucket account.. The pics will be back again dec 12, according to photobucket. Meanwhile, have a look here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUHvQVawfXA&feature=feedu
Somehow the format in the video makes the gun look short and stubby, a bit distorted..
thanks

Hi,
finally got around to cut a trigger guard for my gun. The trigger guard is cut from a piece of 7075. it is held in place by the stock fixing screw (M6). The entire gun can be taken to pieces with three allen keys. If it hadn’t been for the grub screw in the trigger it would have been enough with two different keys to strip it.. A friend provided me with a piece of acetal rod the other day; hopefully that will be transformed into a “slingshot striker system”… I’ll just need to do some “beer can CAD” again before starting to cut the acetal. You probably won’t hear from me for a while now, lots of other stuff to take care of…, but I really would like to thank all of you for showing interest and providing input, and not to forget; all the kind words!
thanks

heres the finished item;

Exellent work!
Can You tell me what kind of AirBottle You used for this project?

Thank you!
The bottle is a 280cc “buddy bottle”. rated max working pressure 232Bar, don’t remeber stated test pressure… i’ll check when i get home. The bottle is fitted with a schrader valve, so it can be unscrewed at any time. I think i comes from a Theoben rapid, but not sure, i bought it second hand.
Cheers

Hi,
yesterday i fitted a rubber butt pad, a grip cap, did some final polishing and put on some “tung tree oil”… Just three small things to do before it’s complete; make a cut out in the fore end for the quick fill probe, cut a trigger guard, and make a fixing point for my bipod.
Thanks

Really Nice! That’s shaping up beautifully.

almost there! I’ve decided to use a smaller airbottle; the 600cc makes the rifle look very “front heavy”.. This is a 280cc bottle, but i have a 400cc that will be here any day now, that i hope will be just the right size. I’ve also ordered a rubber buttpad, hopefully here before the weekend. Still lacking a proper grip cap… will also be taken care of this weekend.
thanks
