project no 4.. bolt action
Hi,
here’s some pic of my latest project. Doesn’t look like much yet… As you can see i havent cut the slot for the mag yet; still on backorder (marauder mag). I plan to build a sort of “inertia hammer”, ad modum Daystate merlin. Airbottle will be a frontmounted 600cc item. Valve design pretty much a Rapid copy.
Thanks

Very nice build supermono!
Do you think you should put in a bit more offset for your bottle? Then you could put a full length shroud over the barrel. Do you have pics of your assembled valve? how much power will it generate?
aloha,
walt
Hi,
please let me know if i bore you with this. Heres what i’ve done tonight; cut the mag slot, cut a slot in the receiver block for the “dog” that pulls the striker back, cross drilled and threaded the bolt. I cut the slot so that i have a bolt opening angle of 40degrees.
Also test fired it for the first time! since i havn’t made the striker assembly yet i simply hit the valve stem whit a piece of brass rod and a hammer. great fun!
heres some pics
Thanks

the system is not pressurised in this pic, hence the slopeing bottle..
heres a pic of the valve pin… still lacking a groove for o-ring, and some cleaning up of the head area. The sealing surface is cut at 60degree taper.. the valve seat is turned from acetal and the centerdrill produces a hole in it with a 60degree taper to match. shaft diam 4.75mm, head diam 6.0mm

Thank you! My plan (so far..) is to run with just the front mounted bottle and no regulator. I have read a lot about the Daystate Merlin that uses a so called “slingshot hammer” to reduce valve bounce and aid in consitency. From what i have understood a well set up slingshot hammer system can produce consistency and shot count that is acceptable without a regulator. But, as a “plan B”, i have a set of drawings for a regulator…

Very nice work supermono, is it going to be dual tank gun and regulated?
Hi,
still haven’t found the charger för my camera battery. These pics are taken with my phone, sorry for that.

this is the off set adaptor with hole for quick fill probe.

this bottle will get a new valve body/adaptor thread.

milled the slot in the bolt block..

took a skim cut with the flycutter to clean up ther rear end of receiver block.

first test with the pump hooked up! I turned a simple valvepin, put a dab of grease around sealing surface, mounted and started pumping. It leaked initially, but once over 60Bar it held air.

I also turned a bolt handle from a piece of scrap metal. Not satisfied with it, so a new on one is on the “to do list”.
Thanks

Hi,
sorry for the slow rate of updates.. I just can’t find the charger for my camera… The bolt part of the receiver is pretty much done, only thing left there is to machine a slot for the pin that will retract the striker and lock the bolt when the handle is in closed position.. see felt tip CAD-file…
I have also made an offset adaptor in order to fit a 60mm diam 600cc airbottle under the barrel. Hole for QF probe is also included in adaptor. No pic of that piece yet, will post tonight. Hopefully i can put a valve pin in it tonight and see if it holds air!

Yes and no… This is a swedish built South Bend 9″ clone. The castings differs in some places, but most parts are interchangeable.
thanks
is that South bend lathe
Thanks for the input and good advices!
Heres the result of todays work… only had 45min. Started on the airbottle adaptor. Turned a piece of 25mm shaft to 22mm and cut a 1,5mm pitch thread. I hand crank my lathe when threading up to a shoulder; a good work out! Note the “rug beater” at the end of the spindle.. i try to remember to remove when done with the hand cranking..
Time to get some sleep!
Thanks

Super clean looking build.
I’m about to attempt a build similar to your one with the rear tank.
Going for a heavy .22lr barrel for a more bench rest looking rifle.
I love your motivation of the build with frequent updates
Dave
Supe , that video is great ,you have a great shop , but you may loose it all if you keep on impressing the wife that way .
What is the make of the 3 axis lathe you have ,it looks like a great machine ?
Keep up the good work , but also keep the wife impressed in the right way so we can get updates on your expert gun building
Hi,
just some pics now, will write something later!
thanks

The two bsuhings will be glued in the receiver
got this in my mail yesterday..

Thanks for the kind words! I tried to shot some video clips last night… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWs1lH28e9E
I must warn you; i’m not good at multi tasking, so holding the camera, doing the machining with one hand and at the same time speaking a foreign language turned out to be a bit too much for me.. I’d also like to point out that my workshop normally don’t look like that…
thanks

Walt,
thank you for the kind words!
The amount of offset was somewhat dictated by the size of the alu chunk i cut it from… Anyway, i calculated with a barrel-bottle clearance of 9mm, so i just might have a chance to squeese in a shroud there.. If it doesn’t fit there is always the possibility to use a 50mm diam bottle instead.
I’ll post some valve pics later!
