Q:

R3 .30 caliber problem and fix

The Problem:
I first noticed after about 2K rounds my velocity dropped off. That can be common, sometimes the HST needs to be readjusted. So I screwed in the HST 1/4 turn and I was back at the 890 fps I was before. I was fine for about another 150 rounds until the real problem started. The gun started behaving erratic when trying to find zero on my target. I put the Matador on the chrony and I found a strange phenomenon. When the gun was full (220 BAR) no manner where the HST was set the most I could get out of the gun was 750 fps. As the pressure in the reservoir dropped the speed conversely would rise until below 150 bar the speed was at 912. I concluded that the valve must be stuck and the reason for the change in speed is that the valve gets more resistance from the air in the reservoir the higher the pressure. The valve must be allowed to move freely in the regulator. The belleville washers are clean, the O rings are perfect and the regulator is assembled correctly. What I found was the valve stem was slightly bent. I know this problem developed over time because the gun was super consistent when I was new. . The valve stem was not too long as it was in Ed’s factory specs. I straightened the valve stem reassembled the gun and I still had the same problem.

The fix:
what I found was the valve stem was slightly oversized and a little rough. Because the stem is steel and the valve stem housing is brass the valve was getting caught/sticking and in my opinion the valve couldn’t open enough. When the gun fell below the 150 pressure setting the valve didn’t have to work as hard to move forward when the hammer hit the stem. I polished the valve stem with 220/20/400/600/800/1200/2000 grit paper on a lathe until I could see my reflection in the valve stem. The valve moved like it was on ball bearings inside the housing. The regulator gave me 24 shots with the average at 880 and the ES at 2.6 fps.

I welcome any criticism you may have about my fix. It’s is possible that I just got lucky. Hell, it’s better to be lucky than good anyway.

I just caught up on this latest adventure with Gen 2 30s. 😯 I have too many other hobbies taking my time lately. It sounds like the 2700 shots approximately on my Gen 1 30 standard is a pure freak of luck? I do have it tuned down a bit (875 fps). It must be very much on borrowed time. When the stem breaks I will replace it with another just like the one in it now instead of the new brass one Ed sent me I guess. 😉 BTW – I have sorted the pellets on this beast from day one. There are too many that are too far off just on weight. I only shot it 100 shots in the last six months at raccoons and opossums (ok a few sparrows).

Is there anyone else watching this thread with a Gen 1 30 that is also not having problems? I really didn’t expect this many shots out of a stem on a 30. I am afraid to change anything on it but it still shoots well. I wonder if the 3mm stem will cure all of the ills on the Gen 2?

Uh oh. Oakey needs a medication adjustment :biggrinn:

Man that is disappointing. Renzo I’ll fix the gun for free. Bring it over with the new hammer and regulator and I’ll take care of it if you want.

The air tube and breech block need to be upgraded if Ed is going to send you a new regulator. The new ones attach from the bottom not the top.

I got another email from Tony saying he will fix the gun but I have to pay for labor!!! Like it was my fault, I didn’t fuck the gun up, it came like that, is their responsibility to pay for everything, also the return shipping fees are on me too! This is all a fucking joke! And this is not about money it’s about principle, they have to step up all the way.

Ed has had several years to address issues that have continued with all his guns! Now folks are fucking pissed off with the lack of effort and the lack of concern. The trust that EDgun had in the bank??? THE VAULT IS EMPTY. SHIT BLEW UP and it AIN’T GOING AWAY until these guns are fixed so sit back shooter3 and watch!

Shooter3 there wasn’t a fix for it until now.

Yes, but you had a year to address that.

renval, forgive my ignorance, but what would you expect? The warranty lasts for 12 months.

Warranty doesn’t matter in this situation, Ed sent us faulty guns, wrong/poor design for a .30 caliber.

:hoot:

Go with “- replace the valve+brass insert with the future production valve (3mm shaft) I was told by Ed it’s in production but don’t have any ETAs yet. Charge for repairs and return”

Right now you need to buy some time, and the gun is eventually useless without a full fix.

Let him hold the gun till he can fix it right and return it. Meanwhile, the word is getting around and there is a chance Ed will step in and do something to make this right.

It sucks, but it’s your best option under the current circumstance.

Yes Hoot that’s what I was going to do, I hope it doesn’t take to long!

I’m a happy man today ☺☺☺☺

ED CANT IGNORE THIS AS THIS PROBLEM WONT GO AWAY !!! BEING ONE OF THE TOP RUNNERS IN THE AIRGUN WORLD !!! IT CAN ONLY BE A POSITIVE THING NOW ED REALIZES THE ISSUE. MY .30 2ND GENERATION IS ONHOLD NOW !! IM WAITING FOR THE FIX ☺☺☺☺☺

I never ingore the problems, was unable to take part in the disscution due to the fact I was out of the home, just returned.

Here is the solution:
