Buy a chronograph. And here’s why.
I bought a .22 Marauder about 3 years ago and I thought it was the best air rifle that was ever made. Until recently I read about how you can tune it and such, so I decided to buy a Chrony. Shot a 50 shots string and I was like WTF? I goes from 600 fps up to 850 and down again. How the fuck can a rifle be accurate and zeroed properly with such a drastic change in fps??? In a short distance I guess it doesn’t matter, but anyway I got to work adjusting the Hammer Spring / Hammer Travel. So I had a lot of pumping to do…and it was killing me! So I decided to buy a carbon fiber tank. Almost $700!!!! Anyway, I got the more expensive 4500psi carbon fiber vs the standard scuba tanks (~$200) because 1. It holds a lot more air 2. filling to 3000psi or higher (I contemplate buying a cricket and need something to go to 300bars). So I tuned my marauder as best I could and the best thing I could do is

That’s with 10# hammer spring, HS 3.5 CW from full CCW, HT full CCW. 21 grains Baracuda.
So the best I could do with this rifle was a good 15-16 shot. So this rifle that I was thought was the best really wasn’t good at all…
I also got the TalonP and so far the best I could do was
1. 894.8 3000 psi
2. 900.1
3. 891.8
4. 891.3
5. 885.3
6. 885.9
7. 885.4
8. 874.9 dropping off
9. 869.2
10. Error 2200 psi
31 grain Baracudas. Power wheel setting at 3-1. Oh, btw there’s not a lot that you can tune for the airforce rifle. To me the only thing tunable is the power wheel. If you set it too high, you just get the maximum FPS then it goes down hill from there… SO ONCE YOU SETTLE ON PW SETTING, DO NOT CHANGE IT!!!! It’s at the optimum setting.
So, In summary, buying a chrony caused me to
1. Spend a lot of money and time tuning
2. Realize that my rifles sucks and need some type of regulator.
3. Probably buy a regulated rifle (probably a Cricket) and spend more money

Maybe you should actually LOOK at his posts and compare them to your own.
Here are just a precious few that Tarzanboy either started or participated in.

Yes that is what I do.
If the cocking knob is not against the frame there is nothing to make sure the breech is in the same place every shot. If you have a .070″ TH that means there is .030″ gap + -.
So if you cook the gun and rotate the knob is it going to be against the TH every time you shoot?
For low powered guns I’m sure every little thing plays a part in being consistent.
On my custom valves they are .200″ TH gap and I make shims to set the gap. My .308 is at .070″ right now and still makes 280 fpe easy. I had it at .085″ and I was getting tank dump and low shot count. Came home and made .080″, .075″, and .070″. Ended up at .070″ with no loss in power and no more tank dumps with heavy slugs.
Also the noise and recoil was so bad. I could see where I hit after I pulled the trigger. Now the noise is down and so is the recoil.
Dyotat if i am understanding what you said correctly then you adjust the top hat out until it holds the breech against the frame and then you shim the gap to get the velocity you want. Is this correct? I ask because my sons older talon has allot of gap even adjusting the top hat out to .100 gap where mine do not. Can i adjust the top hat out till there is no play and shim it for velocity or will this cause any issues by adjusting it that far?

Here is some info for you.
O ring seems to work but I have never done it. I use shims to set the top hat gap. I see the o ring getting tired after time and changing your setting.
To be consistent you need the breech to close tight against the frame. If it is not against the frame The breech will hit the TH different every shot.
They sell nylon washers at the hardware store. Get a few and if you want to change things you can lay a piece of sand paper on a flat surface and sand them down to what you want. If you have a lathe you can just make them. This way what ever you come up with will always be the same. O rings only come in at .070 unless you figure out a metric one that is thinner. You can change the hardness but not sure because I always make mine with shims.
Here is my .25 with reg and a .045″ shim to make it shoot in the 930’s. If I pull the shim it shoots right around 960 fps. But I run a .032″ shim and it still shoots the same but I get around 30 more shots. Just was wasting air.

He in fact DOES know damn near everything… because…. not only does he pay attention to advice given… He puts it into practice and shares the results.

No, I did not get what I wanted for Christmas. What I wanted for Christmas was a Cricket (.22 or .25, haven’t decided yet) that has a numbered pressure gauge. WWAG and R&L only has the color versions, so yeah I’m MAD about that.

Thanks dyotat. It makes sense that the shims would work very good and allow you to get the velocity with out wasting a ton of air by opening the valve more than it needs if you have to adjust for a large top hat gap to remove the play in the breech to frame. I am going to have to try it out on my sons talon.
