Buy a chronograph. And here’s why.
I bought a .22 Marauder about 3 years ago and I thought it was the best air rifle that was ever made. Until recently I read about how you can tune it and such, so I decided to buy a Chrony. Shot a 50 shots string and I was like WTF? I goes from 600 fps up to 850 and down again. How the fuck can a rifle be accurate and zeroed properly with such a drastic change in fps??? In a short distance I guess it doesn’t matter, but anyway I got to work adjusting the Hammer Spring / Hammer Travel. So I had a lot of pumping to do…and it was killing me! So I decided to buy a carbon fiber tank. Almost $700!!!! Anyway, I got the more expensive 4500psi carbon fiber vs the standard scuba tanks (~$200) because 1. It holds a lot more air 2. filling to 3000psi or higher (I contemplate buying a cricket and need something to go to 300bars). So I tuned my marauder as best I could and the best thing I could do is

That’s with 10# hammer spring, HS 3.5 CW from full CCW, HT full CCW. 21 grains Baracuda.
So the best I could do with this rifle was a good 15-16 shot. So this rifle that I was thought was the best really wasn’t good at all…
I also got the TalonP and so far the best I could do was
1. 894.8 3000 psi
2. 900.1
3. 891.8
4. 891.3
5. 885.3
6. 885.9
7. 885.4
8. 874.9 dropping off
9. 869.2
10. Error 2200 psi
31 grain Baracudas. Power wheel setting at 3-1. Oh, btw there’s not a lot that you can tune for the airforce rifle. To me the only thing tunable is the power wheel. If you set it too high, you just get the maximum FPS then it goes down hill from there… SO ONCE YOU SETTLE ON PW SETTING, DO NOT CHANGE IT!!!! It’s at the optimum setting.
So, In summary, buying a chrony caused me to
1. Spend a lot of money and time tuning
2. Realize that my rifles sucks and need some type of regulator.
3. Probably buy a regulated rifle (probably a Cricket) and spend more money

Tc. Now that we aren’t stupid for knowing you can adjust the Top Hat, Sit it at .070′ from the face of the bottle and give it a try. Locktite is a little too strong to seal the tiny grub screws that lock it in place. (Hope you loosened them before unscrewing the top hat) But clear, (or any other color if your in to that kind of thing) finger nail polish does a fine job of locking them.
We would have already told you how to do this long ago if you hadn’t been so arrogant and let us know we were stupid for trying to help you! but it is what it is! 😉

I see potential in this. I’m now going to need a heavy hammer and perhaps a one piece tophat to increase FPS to around 900. More $$$ to spend, but at least now that I have this poor-man’s regulator ( 10 cents o-ring) I don’t have to waste money on a ‘real’ regulator.
Whoever suggested the o-ring under the top hat, THANK YOU! Unless it was Woody, then a big FUCK YOU!

Alright, to prove that I’m not stubborn, I did decide to mess with the top hat. Didn’t realize that you can actually screw out the top hat from the valve stem until I saw a picture of them apart. It seems like the stock top hat is ‘flush’. From this position I unscrewed CCW 1.5 turns. I didn’t go anymore because the breech knob won’t be able to turn to the sides. With this tophat settings I got about 80 fps increase! I got a lot of tuning to do!!! Thanks Knife! (sincere, but with sarcasm)
However, I did this after I just ordered a one-piece tophat and a heavy hammer. It’s coming from Europe so I will have to wait about a month for it to get here. I don’t know if it’s worth tuning what I have now or should I wait until the rest arrive…One month without the headache.

I did add an o-ring under the tophat and WOW, did it make a difference. I had left over (about 100 actually) of #009 O-rings I bought to rebuilt my Benjamin hand pump and I figure I would give it a try. Nice fit! There was a drastic drop in FPS, I went from around 880 to 800 at PW=3, but the shot count increased and a lot closer together in FPS. I did a quick test but will do a more thorough one later. I maxed out the PW=12 for maximum FPS and got 868, 863, 864, 860, 858, 851, 849, 843. PSI from 3000-2500.
