Q:

The WORST thing an airgunner could do is…

Buy a chronograph. And here’s why.

I bought a .22 Marauder about 3 years ago and I thought it was the best air rifle that was ever made. Until recently I read about how you can tune it and such, so I decided to buy a Chrony. Shot a 50 shots string and I was like WTF? I goes from 600 fps up to 850 and down again. How the fuck can a rifle be accurate and zeroed properly with such a drastic change in fps??? In a short distance I guess it doesn’t matter, but anyway I got to work adjusting the Hammer Spring / Hammer Travel. So I had a lot of pumping to do…and it was killing me! So I decided to buy a carbon fiber tank. Almost $700!!!! Anyway, I got the more expensive 4500psi carbon fiber vs the standard scuba tanks (~$200) because 1. It holds a lot more air 2. filling to 3000psi or higher (I contemplate buying a cricket and need something to go to 300bars). So I tuned my marauder as best I could and the best thing I could do is

1. 883.1
2. 887.5
3. 889.4
4. 896.7
5. 894.8
6. 900.9
7. 899.1
8. 899.1
9. 902.1
10. 895.5
11. 893.3
12. 891.7
13. 887.6
14. 889.2
15. 879.7
16. 884.0
17. 874.1
18. 871.8
19. 868.9
20. 864.1

That’s with 10# hammer spring, HS 3.5 CW from full CCW, HT full CCW. 21 grains Baracuda.

So the best I could do with this rifle was a good 15-16 shot. So this rifle that I was thought was the best really wasn’t good at all…

I also got the TalonP and so far the best I could do was

1. 894.8 3000 psi
2. 900.1
3. 891.8
4. 891.3
5. 885.3
6. 885.9
7. 885.4
8. 874.9 dropping off
9. 869.2
10. Error 2200 psi

31 grain Baracudas. Power wheel setting at 3-1. Oh, btw there’s not a lot that you can tune for the airforce rifle. To me the only thing tunable is the power wheel. If you set it too high, you just get the maximum FPS then it goes down hill from there… SO ONCE YOU SETTLE ON PW SETTING, DO NOT CHANGE IT!!!! It’s at the optimum setting.

So, In summary, buying a chrony caused me to

1. Spend a lot of money and time tuning
2. Realize that my rifles sucks and need some type of regulator.
3. Probably buy a regulated rifle (probably a Cricket) and spend more money

Hahaha… i guess i won that discussion…
Not even a real response from the idiot.

I think i hurt her feelings.

FYI Woody faggot I added you as foe and won’t be reading your dumb comments.

Sigh… Goddammit Woody, it’s “you pencil dick piece of shit.” What’s this world coming to?

I keep messing that one up 😳

Hey woody dickhead, fuck you dumb piece of shit. I bet you have no fucking education. That’s why you like to talk down to people. I guess it makes you feel smart. Dumb fuck.

P.S I like fucking your mom’s hairy cunt AND ass.

No surprise, you’re wrong again. My advice is to stop making guesses, because you seem to be wrong all the time.
I have a very extensive education. If you want to go there, what is your education level?
Beauty school drop-out? Wendy’s University?

I have a degree in psychology and a handful of professional licenses for the field i work in.
I dont need to talk down to people to feel smart. I am smart.

Keep it up. Like knifemaker said, you’re building your own reputation on the forum. Im working towards ‘major asshole who knows what he’s talking about.

I cant believe im keeping this up with a guy who says chronographs are no good for serious airgunners. Seriously, that’s like saying chefs should never sharpen their knives. Your backwards statements are just plain moronic.

You’re a fucking idiot. I feel bad for your kids having to be raised by someone as stupid and closed minded as you are.

However, you cannot infinitesimally adjust them like you can with stock top hat. I hope that made sense.

Sure you can. Cut some shims of appropriate thickness, pop out the stem, slip on a shim or two, and knock it back in. Or o-ring it. In the unlikely case you want more, I’m sure Tony’ll trim a few hundredths off the backside.

This guy is an idiot. Not worth trying to help him since he knows it all already. He read a bunch and formed his own opinions on how the stuff really works….
He says the product is no good, then says he wants one but is waiting for it to go ‘on sale’…then tells people who actually own em what they are ‘suppposed’ to do.
Fuckin moron.

I’m not slamming Tony’s top hat. I actually think it’s a good idea, as it’s one piece and won’t get loose. Also it’s nice to shoot in lower fps. But don’t say that it’s for tuning the rifle, it ain’t. And when I say tuning I meant limiting the amount of air used and not increased fps. I would love to buy Tony’s top hat but I’m waiting for it to go on sale…

The inserts do limit the airflow. There are 2 different size inserts that come with the tophat. They both decrease fps and airflow. The smaller one decreases the airflow and pellet fps the most.

Did you think they made the gun shoot faster?
With no inserts you get the most airflow and highest power.

Im very confused as to what you think they are for.

don’t be confused, I know exactly what Tony’s top hat does. Like I said it’s a very good design, you would get very good consistency with them since it’s a solid one piece construction. What I’m saying that you cannot adjust them like you can with stock top hat. You get the two restrictive insert which is great for shooting at lower speeds. Without them you’re supposed to get 50 fps increase so that’s great by itself. However, you cannot infinitesimally adjust them like you can with stock top hat. I hope that made sense.

This is a bad example of how well this gun shoots.
20 shots and 20 yards. Gun on bipod on uneven dirt and grass. WokButt balanced on back hand while I was kneeling down shooting, along with underpowered scope.

70 fps spread isn’t too much. Like I said, I’m usually good with 50fps spread with my marauders.

Also, you just bought a chrony and barely know what you’re doing…how is it that you are saying what is too much of a spread and what isn’t on a bell curve.

As far as tuning and adjusting…you sort of slammed Tony’s tophat, but you haven’t used one. The inserts are how you tune the tophat. If you think adjusting airflow is not tuning, I don’t know what to tell you. There are other ways you tune the gun other than adjusting the stock tophat. Your opinions are misleading to people who think you might actually know what you are talking about.
It’s perfectly fine to be wrong, but to spout opinions without really knowing the full subject matter is dumb.

Also, if you know where you gun shoots, a 200 fps curve is useable. Knowing your gun and its shooting points is key. Just like zeroing your scope at say 30 yards. You have to know the aimpoints on your scope when you shoot at something at other distances. It’s not like you just adjust the distance on your scope and hit a bullseye by putting the crosshairs on the target at 50 yards. Depending on the curve of your pellets trajectory, you will have to aim higher or lower…usually done by using the mildots. Other times people just know where to put the crosshairs so the pellet goes where they want it at different distances. So fps spread is really only a component of what the user/tuner wants it to be. If you want consistent, same speed/energy shots you keep the fps spread small.
Othertimes peole don’t even want a spread. They want 5 or 10 full power shots that start high and decline as they shoot.
All sorts of different types of tunes. All sorts of ways to get there too.

quote tcmalker:

interesting reads…

so from what Knife is saying, I draw a conclusion that I, nor anybody else, shouldn’t buy a one piece top hat (as offered by Tony and others) since those are not adjustable and therefore not tunable. And please don’t try to say there’s inserts for that. I wouldn’t call that tuning. Is that what you’re saying? Are you advising against a one piece top hat?

As for the bell curve of 70fps difference for Woody’s condor, I believe that’s too much! I don’t know exactly how much POI change is, so if you know please tell us.

About the width of a tic tac.
