Q:

What would be the min. requirement to kill a deer?

What would one need to do to a ss to have it put out enough fpe to kill deer at 30 yards or less? What caliber, and length of barrel would you suggest, would a stock gun with a barrel swap ever do it? thanks!

There is always overkill with anything and sounds like that ammo just may be in that category nothing like a 203 to take out a hurd of deer :).

I like deer meat and we snag 4 or 5 each year but I use a 12 gauge with slugs from a blind it does the job but I am not against someone using an air rifle if that’s what makes em happy just way too much wind where I hunt and in the perfect setting a small cal air rifle could do the trick but why take the chance.

The minimum wind is 14mph all the time out in hillsdale and it’s said to be a great place for a windmill for energy due to the winds it’s not a question of an air rifle being able to make the kill it’s a question of is it going to hit the mark at 50 yards and get the kill.

I also find it pretty cool that the deer got creamed but I really don’t like deer very much and you wouldn’t believe what some of the farmers do to them I won’t go into it 🙂

For the record I think an air rifle with properly placed head shot will kill a deer and I am not a PETA PITA so fire away.

As far as shooting deer with the massive guns, I shot a deer once with my old 300 ultra mag. 180 grain ballistic tip at over 3300fps doing around 4400fpe. The gun also had a problem with the ballistic tip bullets I was using, at over 3000fps (drops below that at 150 yards) the bullets go nuclear and don’t deform uniformly, the explode and send shrapnel all over the place.

There wasn’t a lot left to eat. 🙂 Turned everything inside out, and shrapnel all over the meat. Made a ridiculous hole though, and I didn’t have to chase it very far, because the sheer shock power of the gun just drops the animal. It was legal though, not too small of a caliber. Sure, it takes the point away of the hunting and eating, but it was fun and pretty cool. 😀

You could just feed a deer my wifes cooking that’s enough

See the deer starting to fall down after eating off the feeder laced with wifes grub

Seriously though out where my dad lives and depends on crops to sustain his cattle it doesn’t matter how they are killed and I have a hunting trailer out there where I spend a lot of time and the deer are running out of control literally I treat them like a crow or a squirrel due to the cost of crops they are costing the farmers in western michigan.

I am surrounded by corn fields and deer are no more than pests out there but everyone eats what they kill too. I personally wouldn’t take a shot at one with a small bore air rifle just because I’m lazy and don’t feel like chasing it if a gust of wind takes my shot off target wounding the thing.

To the OP I don’t think it’s a matter of the minimum caliber or fps that will take a deer as it is a matter of the minimum caliber and fps, fpe that will be accurately delievered on target IMHO something that won’t be taken off target by wind or if the deer moves a little and these things are overcome by more powerful rounds.

PM sent.

How much if you don’t change the breech and all that: valve, hammer, ect. or do you have too?

Machinist….What are the laws in your state for taking deer? Can you even use and airgun?

Maybe a follow up shot, how much are your kits again?

As cool as they are apparently the kits are too much for most. Over 300.00 with shipping. I’ve been thinking of some ways to get the cost down.

Tag’s two cents 🙂

What about the abominable snowman and bigfoot? I hear bigfoot is a tough sombitch when he gets doped up on crack.

I did’nt think about a freebaseing Big Foot 😯 That could be a problem.

The best way to transform an SS or Condor into an efficient Big Game weapon is an arrow barrel.
Pellets, Bullets,Slugs, buckshot all kill best when traveling at maximum velocity because penetration and massive tissue damage even in vital areas is required for a clean kill. Regardless of cal. Airguns are at a disadvantage on thick-hided, big-boned animals because of their lower velocities.
Where bullets kill with shock and shrapnel damage, Razor tipped arrows kill by making the animal hemorrhage to death. I have shot a lot of deer with bow and arrow and guns and the blood trails from the arrows are astounding compared to gun shot deer.

The really question is how big of a deer. I live in the Texas hill country and the deer are about 90 lbs MAX. It would not bother me to shoot one around here with a .25 slug from Jerry but I would not even think about it in south Texas were the deer are alot larger.

Fatman

1500 fpe.

For me it’s about not taking too big a chance of causing a significant animal to suffer because of a botched shot. Rabbits I could care less about, though I wouldn’t inflict suffering deliberately. But when one takes off down it’s hole after being shot through, sad but I don’t lose any sleep.

pests are one thing but a big-game animal is quite another. There are fellas in the US working hard to gain acceptance for airguns as legitimate hunting arms. Fooling around with patheticly gutless airguns works against that acceptance. If the discussion is around ethical hunting then we work for the effort and with that in mind a .45 with 200fpe should be considered the minimum airgun for deer. For muzzleloaders the minimum up here in Canada is .50 cal and mine makes around 1500fpe.

No Voltar, 200 fpe to the head is not enough. I recommend at least a naval gun no less that 5inch, ideally with the barrel placed next to the head( you should be able to get into this position if you are a good hunter)
Failing this, a truck in a Trebuchet should suffice…

LMAO….Good one pab…I see he is at it again….ANd it looks like he has a side kick for support too….

you can jump out of a tree with a knife onto its back and slit its throat too but i dont recommend it

i would say 22/250 or .223 is a minimum

but thats just me
