Q:

What would be the min. requirement to kill a deer?

What would one need to do to a ss to have it put out enough fpe to kill deer at 30 yards or less? What caliber, and length of barrel would you suggest, would a stock gun with a barrel swap ever do it? thanks!

NO IT CAN NOT!!!!!!!!

Do not try this!!!!!

mim – .25, Jerry’s big slugs doing 1000 + fps.

AKA – 100 ft. lbs mim!

Tell that to Blod’s mate.

and I suppose you think Harry’s .177 yot kill was a cool thing to do as well, I know for a fact that a well placed kodiak……………………………………………………………….

So my answer stand at NO IT CAN NOT BE DONE! and I will add SHOULD NOT BE TRYED!

If I find a deer at 30yds, head-on with it’s head down and me with my .25, it’s getting one straight through the cannister. 😆

It can be done with a .22 doing 800fps (MV) within that range, heart or brain shot.

Airguns on big game are illegal in texas.

My son is a “fish and game” officer in Alaska – definatly illegal there.
Some one on another airgun site was posting pictures of the bear he shot in AK. with an airgun. He must not know the law, and is in jepordy of being fined (no I did not turn him in). You gotta know your state law!

I know Mark. The call was more for conversion than anything else. I thought perhaps it might also be a step into their legalization.

Very well put. :8

When I was young, I hunted in Michigan.
On opening day, you could hear: bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, in rapid repeat.
Well, you know the moron with the semi-automatic gun, missed all 5 times!!!!!

No skill.
No practice with the gun.
No brains.

Every year someone gets a bullet through his car, killing the driver dead.
Morons with guns!

Mark

I once called Texas Fish and Game about the legalities of hunting whitetail with airguns.

When I finally got someone that knew anything he said, “what’s this, you want to hunt whiteWING with an airgun.” When I said, “No, whiteTAIL,” he thought I was some crazy kid with a BB gun. I informed him of the capabilities of big bore air rifles and he was rather astounded. Went straight to the Internet to research Quackenbush.

I know what the books say, but I never received a straight yes or no answer. That was more than 3 years ago. The books haven’t changed to include bore bore though…

Wonder what it would take to have them legalized?

Let me know how you get on when you actually DO some shooting 😆

You wouldn’t, ten feet underground in the warren A&E.

I hear the rabbit-population of Lincolnshire is considering a class-action lawsuit against you based upon that very premise.

A fellow sent me a picture of a deer he had taken with a Barnes 100 FPE .32 shooting a custom 72gr slug my boys had made. He’s a very patient hunter and had waited for the buck to present the perfect aspect to take a heart shot. He sent a picture of the slug too. The slug had passed through the heart and stopped just under the skin on the opposite side. The circumstances of the hunt were legal. The relatively mild power of this gun was a consideration that required close range and proper shot placement creating a challenging hunt. The deer died rapidly.

I have no doubt that a similarly disciplined hunter using a 100+ FPE condor at 35 yards shooting a 7 or 9 ring slug could achieve the same result.

I’m also certain that an idiot with an .87 shooting a 920gr slug at 840 FPE could manage to blow off half a deer’s leg and knock down a sapling behind it creating a sad mess!

These questions always bother me a bit because someone might think that any shot with a .22 and up will be good and the other side anticipating this always goes for the naval gun extreme. 😆

In a perfect world I could edit these questions to say “How much poison will make my mother-in-law shut up?”

The biggest challenge is being able to NOT take the shot until the situation is perfect….

There are rules against using small calibers on larger game because of morons potential abuse, not because they are inefficient in the right situation. Go ahead, tell me how oh so wrong i am.

Yes! Thats a big part of this discussion, we dont want to encourage inexperianced morons to go deer hunting with BB guns!

I laugh at you guys who pack a 300 mag for deer season, tossing 180 gr. at 3000 plus FPS,

A lot of people go hunting with 30-06, 30-30, etc.
Where I hunt, the shots are never over 100 yards.
Such powerful, and accurate guns, take all the “sport” out of it.
If you see a deer, there is little doubt that you can “get” it.
I see no challenge in this. I do not hunt deer with such guns.
Thats why a low powered airgun is such a challenge.
You MUST be accurate with your shot.
You MUST be very selective, choosing just the right conditions to pull the trigger. Some skill must be involved, There must be “fair chase”.
