What would be the min. requirement to kill a deer?
What would one need to do to a ss to have it put out enough fpe to kill deer at 30 yards or less? What caliber, and length of barrel would you suggest, would a stock gun with a barrel swap ever do it? thanks!

For me it’s about not taking too big a chance of causing a significant animal to suffer because of a botched shot. Rabbits I could care less about, though I wouldn’t inflict suffering deliberately. But when one takes off down it’s hole after being shot through, sad but I don’t lose any sleep.
pests are one thing but a big-game animal is quite another. There are fellas in the US working hard to gain acceptance for airguns as legitimate hunting arms. Fooling around with patheticly gutless airguns works against that acceptance. If the discussion is around ethical hunting then we work for the effort and with that in mind a .45 with 200fpe should be considered the minimum airgun for deer. For muzzleloaders the minimum up here in Canada is .50 cal and mine makes around 1500fpe.

is this about ethical hunting or just killing a deer? is this a nosensical proposition or what?
Personally I wouldn’t try it unless it was a perfect head-on shot with it’s head down, at a range I was 100% certain to get the round inside a 1″ circle. With a .25 I’d be happy to go for the side of it’s head too.
Bit of a random fact but in the UK where I am at the moment there are laws that prohibit you from using to smaller gun on specific animals. I know you can’t use a .22 rimfire on deer. I may be wrong as never looked it up but think it could be .222rem as the minimum? Please tell me if I’m wrong. Guess there working off its better to over do it and be positive of a kill.
just because you can doesn’t mean you should
I don’t condone doing such… but it doesn’t take much.
Someone on the Yellow did a test a while back that showed that 14 FPE on target was what it took to consistently penetrate a deers skull.
Body shots should be left to calbers of .308 or larger and no less than 150 FPE… my opinion.
NO IT CAN NOT!!!!!!!!
Do not try this!!!!!
mim – .25, Jerry’s big slugs doing 1000 + fps.
AKA – 100 ft. lbs mim!
Tell that to Blod’s mate.
I do not know about that power but I have done it a few times with a .22 kodiak pellet traveling at 50fpe 1050fps, hard shot, no problem.
Accuracy and a little power that is all that is needed.
As for the HOG
Rapid MK2 46 fpe .22 cal with a 21 grain kodiak….near the bottom of the page.

I arrived at the scene of a car/deer accident years ago and the doe was trying to walk away from us with a nearly severed front leg. The only gun I had with me was my target .22LR pistol … at about 35 yards away I put the sights on the top of her neck just below the skull and squeezed off … she dropped instantly and never made another move much to my relief.
I got lucky with that shot because it severed the spinal cord with a direct hit. So … it can be done .. and it’s not something I want to have to do again.
Unless you are in complete survival mode and need the meat to save your bacon … use a bigger gun please 😀
These type of questions always bring flames!
I lived on a farm where we had a permit to basically kill as many deer as possible. I have used more weapons and methods than i would care to explain here. A .22 put in the right spot drops them dead in thier tracks. A feeding deer with its head down can be brain shot and they look like you hit them with a sledgehammer! I do not recommend a .22 for deer hunting but a .22 long rifle has been known to kill a few deer. In my opinion hogs are tougher than deer and we all know the hog gamo story. 😉

It can be done with a .22 doing 800fps (MV) within that range, heart or brain shot.

I did it with 200 fpe.
9mm /.357 homebuild.
Headshot, close in.
You MUST choose the right shot.
You MUST be totaly proficent with your gun, at the range and conditions you are shooting from.
This was TOTALY legal in the state where I hunt.
This Deer was tagged and taken to the DNR inspection station.
BUT, from personal experiance, I will NEVER hunt deer with less than 300 FPE again. I base this on the fact that I did not get an exit hole for the two shots required to put this deer down.

I expect to do it again with a better gun, in November ->> .357 @ 300 FPE.
