What would be the min. requirement to kill a deer?
What would one need to do to a ss to have it put out enough fpe to kill deer at 30 yards or less? What caliber, and length of barrel would you suggest, would a stock gun with a barrel swap ever do it? thanks!

The question is not if it is ethical, legal, or moral, but what would get the job done. In a perfect situation a .177 caliber inside thirty yards might do the job. A lot more deer have been shot with a .22 LR than people would think. When i was a lot younger i saw deer drop with one properly aimed shot at distances beyond 100 with that insignifigant LR round, (that’s 32 gr. traveling around 1100 FPS, sounds familiar doesn’t it?) and never saw one run off or need a follow up shot. The question would be is it within the shooters capabilities to place the shot correctly. I’ve seen coyotes and pigs posted on this forum shot with air rifles, some .177 caliber, why is a deers head so much different? If the need arose, (why i don’t know) i would not hesitate to use either my BSA .22 or Talondor .25 to take a deer within that range and feel quite capable in it’s abilities to kill the animal efficiently and humanely. FPE does not make the difference, the attitude and capabilities of the hunter are more the question. I know i would not want to get hit in the head by a CP doing 950 FPS, i’ve shot ham bones and can tell you they hit very hard, even at 80 yards. More FPE might cause more damage, but we are harvesting the animal to consume not ruin correct? A 50 gr. bullet from my 22 250 can absolutely pulverize a deers skull at five hundred yards, but all it needs to do is poke a hole inside and send a few skull fragments flingin about inside the brain cavity. I laugh at you guys who pack a 300 mag for deer season, tossing 180 gr. at 3000 plus FPS, must like throwing blood shot meat away. There are rules against using small calibers on larger game because of morons potential abuse, not because they are inefficient in the right situation. Go ahead, tell me how oh so wrong i am.
*JaboOody Dubs voice-over* “And there you have it.”

No, No, No heart shots with a .22 @ 800 FPS!!!!
Not enough penitration! No No No!!!
BTW, I am in search of plans for a truck Trebuchet — Can anyone help?

I’m not saying it’d be a sensible shot to take, rib-deflection and all that etc, but the round would certainly have the power to reach in at up to 30yds and hole the heart, so long as the round stayed on course.
Talking purely technical here. 😉
We are discussing what is required to do the job.
No side tracking now matey… 🙄 😆
well then a .177 is plenty
See, wasn’t so hard was it..
And you are right, it is against the law to use anything less than a .223 to take deer ( as I remember it.)

I prefer a 3,500lb automobile doing 60 mph. The best conditions are at night, lights on the car on bright with the horn blaring all the way to impact. This usually does the trick. AKULA
We are not talking about the legalities of this Voltar.

You do not need 200+ fpe to bring a deer down humanely.
Of course, the more energy the better, but you do not NEED those kind of energy levels.
I know someone who drops deer with much less, and very cleanly.
in this country those guys are poachers and would therefore be turned in to the fish and wildlife authorities. legitimate hunters do not poach
Don’t you fellas have rules with respect to the hunting of game animals?

pests are one thing but a big-game animal is quite another. There are fellas in the US working hard to gain acceptance for airguns as legitimate hunting arms. Fooling around with patheticly gutless airguns works against that acceptance. If the discussion is around ethical hunting then we work for the effort and with that in mind a .45 with 200fpe should be considered the minimum airgun for deer. For muzzleloaders the minimum up here in Canada is .50 cal and mine makes around 1500fpe.
No Voltar, 200 fpe to the head is not enough. I recommend at least a naval gun no less that 5inch, ideally with the barrel placed next to the head( you should be able to get into this position if you are a good hunter)
Failing this, a truck in a Trebuchet should suffice…

and your point is?
does the OP want an honest answer or not?
Does he wish to go hunting or poaching?
is this a legal or illegal venture?
For me it’s about not taking too big a chance of causing a significant animal to suffer because of a botched shot. Rabbits I could care less about, though I wouldn’t inflict suffering deliberately. But when one takes off down it’s hole after being shot through, sad but I don’t lose any sleep.

Took a nice hog with 250 FPE, 9MM caliber.
35 yards, with perfect shot placement.
One shot, between the eyes, did the job.
Bullet Damage was found near the heart.
Bullet went In the head and damaged stuff near the heart (about 12 inches of penetration). (a head / heart shot?)
