Q:

Why bother with .25

I cannot reason with something…why is the .25 caliber more popular as a mod than the .22?

I thought about it for quite a while and heres what i think: If you want more “stopping power” for between the calibers….22 or .25 ???????

I want power, so id like a bigger caliber, but isnt it the same if i use the original .22 barrel and just go for heavier bullets?

The smaller diameter of the bullets makes less wind resistance with the same weight, it also penetrates better into due to size, it tumbles more once it hits and hence makes more damage. Or so i see it….

Isnt this why the AA went from 7.62 to 5.56 caliber?

I still want the .25 caiber one day, but for now it seems to me that the .22 condor with a bulet of the same weight than the .25 bullet will do the same job better – its faster, smaller bullet means less trouble in wind.

Or is the air flow “bigger”? Is the valve on the .25 also different than on the .22?

Id love to hear from you guys cause for me it does not make sence 🙄

That is good to hear welder and I really don’t need to go above 42 grain for my purposes which is small game and pest birds but I like the idea of less correction on windy days.

the stock condor should do that or very close to it

if you start shooting jerrys 80 or 90 grain .25s youll prolly need a heavier hammer and spring

🙂 well now that jerry has convinced me to get a .25 barrel I have a whole new set of questions nyuk nyuk, what needs to be done besides the barrel of course to shoot 42 grains pellets at lets say 950-1000fps do I need to change anything or will the stock setup deliver those numbers.

Now you’re talking my language jerry and when we engaged targets at 1200m there can be as much as 12-14″ of drop depending on the round be it 7.62, .308, .338, .50 so I follow you. Anthing over 300m is wasting your time with a .223 or 5.56

I was pretty sure you would notice something was off with another try at the program. 🙂

If you work in enough runs with Chairgun comparing pellets and slugs you will find some interesting results. For instance, some high speed pellets will have a trajectory that starts out flatter but then drops faster than the slower but higher BC slug at greater distance. The energy remaining at long range will be dramatically different too.

The whole .22 vs. .25 boils down to the same argument as .177 vs. .58, power! The diameter of the projectile has absolutely no bearing on accuracy. If you want accurate, you work on uniform barrel with a perfect crown, uniform projectiles that are perfectly balanced and match the barrel twist and shot velocity. It doesn’t matter if your shooting a .177 or an unguided 120mm tank round, the principles are the same.

Now, if you want precision at long range; you have to add in technique, and consider the environment. You’re not going to be very precise with a .177 7.9gr pellet shooting 100 yards in gusting 7-15MPH winds. Even with extraordinary skills, you’re just not going to get tight groups very often. Shoot a 560gr .62 under the same conditions and you may not be able to notice the difference from perfect conditions. The difference between the .22 and .25 is just a smaller subset of my example.

Does trajectory have anything to do with accuracy? No, it only influences first shot precision. If the pellet made a complete loop on every shot but always hit the same spot it would be accurate but the shooter would have a tough time adjusting for range. Real pellets don’t hit the same spot every time and that’s where they depart from perfect accuracy. Fortunately, real pellets have predictable trajectories that don’t include loops so the shooter can learn ranges and drops within reasonable precision.

The real question is whether the shooter takes the time to learn the trajectory and how to estimate range. Getting a laser flat trajectory is not a matter of accuracy, it is a matter of compensating for the shooter’s inability to estimate range and lack of knowledge regarding his trajectory.

So, a given shooter should pick a caliber based on what they are going to shoot most often at a given range of ranges and under what conditions. The perfectly flat trajectory, huge power yet whisper silent 1/4 MOA gun does not exist in any caliber.

I knew I should have put my disclaimer in there “in the world of powder ammo” to cover my ass but it looks like the .25 does have a flatter trajectory that the .22 at 95% of the ranges for some reason the .22 had less drop in the 24ish yard area.

I’m used to the .223 or 5.56 compared to the 7.62 but it’s not the same ballgame thanks for pointing out the BC which I shouldn’t have missed. I might consider a .25 with this information and I guess I’m still just a youngster in the pellet world 🙂

You might want to go back and make sure all the variables you entered were exactly the same, especially BC.

Just to be clear I like the .25 too and have a .25 it’s a real hammer but I just wanted to clear up the issue of trajectory and which round has a flatter path.

Go to the chairgun pro and enter the same exact fps,distance,weight etc and even at 100m the .22 will be 3″ higher in POI so a flatter trajectory and that only gets more pronounced the further it goes and at 300m the .25 drops 174″ more that a .22

I am only posting this to clarify the trajectory issue and not to advocate one caliber over another and I always feel it’s important to know the real deal on anything if nothing else just to know.

On that note I may get a .25 barrel and shroud for my condor one of these days and compare the 2 barrels for accuracy and for just breaking shit up.

On edit the fpe is considerably more from the .25 and that would be the only reason I can see to get one but a well placed shot will always rule the day.

I have a chronograph/bullet trap set up in my hobby room and regularly test my rifles to make sure velocity and shot to shot variations are still right on the money. Each rifle has it’s own log …

When I sit down with the .25 in that room I cringe every time … I put on bigger safety glasses and insert ear plugs because that blasting banging flippin .25 is a BEAST !

Every time I shoot a squirrel with one I see a tremendous amount of damage even at 65 yards … it’s more caliber than I need … that’s why I am getting another one to add to the herd 😆
