Q:

Dr. Steele’s Cricket finds a new owner this evening

Well, I’m gonna give that favorite little Edgun shorty some compact company as I got a hold of Steve again this evening and was able to purchase a special little used Cricket Compact Skeleton Stock in .22 just as I was wanting.

I feel fortunate in that this is a used gun with some nice tuning work from Ernest and has both the original and a N.C. moderator with an optional extension and was the gun previously belonging to the late Dr. Steel here on our forum. I have to say I am a bit sentimental and would much rather have this gun than a new one, it will always seem special to me. Rest in Peace brother, your gun will be in caring hands, enjoyed as you would have wanted and well kept in pristine condition and I will be honored to look after it for you.

Steve is as nice and good to deal with as everyone says !! Two thumbs up !!

Doug D.

There is definitely more light being let in on the 56mm but for 98% of my shooting it makes little difference. If you shoot right at dusk like I do occasionally with the illuminated reticle than I might lean towards the 56mm but I just rarely do it so it is a non-issue for me.

I have three 8-32×56 SR Pros and four 6-20×42 Tactical 1/2MDs and one 4-12×50 Panorama 1/2 MD (on my PRod). All have glass-etched reticles and are very clear. That said I have the latest generation of each which is critical in the Hawke line. The early Panoramas and SR 30s were poor. The new CNC machine they got and slowly converted over too cranks out much thinner reticles. I kind of know the history behind Hawke a bit from conversations a few years ago before they were so popular.

Do you have both the SW 56mm and the 42mm objective versions. Can you comment on brightness and clarity. Is an overcast day more detrimental to the 42mm than the 56mm , I have been wanting to try one but don’t want to back up from what I have.

I traded Hawke my Varmint back (I bought one of the early ones) after having it for two weeks (the thick wires were awful but it was very clear unlike some of them I heard but not up to the SWs) and upgraded to one of the same Sidewinder Tactical’s I just mentioned.

Mine is a 10x mildot and part of the varmit series. You know it just sucks optically compared to the SW 30 series of scopes. It is the $200 spread and not the good ones you and I like. You know I think I will try to take some pictures through both scopes and see if the difference shows up. I love my big HK-4010 56mm sidewinders !!!!!

Is it a Sidewinder Tactical? I’d send it to the Hawke boyz for a replacement or upgrade if it is an HD or something. What does it do?

I have a Hawke Sidewinder Tactical 6.5-20x42mm 1/2MD that works perfectly that I may throw on my .177 Compact Cricket initially.

The Leupold Custom Shop has changed reticles and knobs for me as I wanted to upgrade older scopes.
In the past that was what I normally would buy, but now have a much wider selection of scopes that meet my requirements. Hawke and Vortex being a couple.

I am still brain Dead from studying scopes last week in anticipation of it’s arrival. So far I have put 125 rounds through it on and around my property since arriving yesterday with an inexpensive Bushnell 3-9 Legend HD and that scope is my favorite in the sub $200 range. I am going to swap it out this evening with my 4-16×42 Hawke that I frequently rag on and give it one last chance. If it fails me I may just decide to shoot at it rather than through it. In fact if it still pisses me off after giving a last try, I think we will see some video of it staring as the scope in a youtube video movie of the sniper story, where our guy put a round through the opposing snipers scope backwards. :biggrinn:

Ok yes !! That will be fine. Trade 1 for 1 is fine. What does it cost to polish my other 5 as one oddball would drive me to drinking.

Trade magazine, have new .22 Mags and have only 3 .177 mag. No need to ask Steve , he probably call me to send the .22 mags.

I need to play with it more and decide what to think about it before I could consider any trades. You definitely have dibbs if it ever goes anywhere.

Ernest: Steve accidentally put a .177 magazine in my package. I accused him of high pressure sales tactics. 😆 I am trying to decide if I should return the mag. for a 22 version or get a gun to match it. 100 shots sound like fun. I know little about the 177 caliber but imagine it quite effective at short range pest shooting which is what I like the best.

Lets trade, need two??? I can polish the bore if you want and ship with the reg tester????? today. 177 are vary quiet–great for sniping–even the impact is quiet!

It’s a fun caliber due its straight trajectory.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2. This POS iPhone sucks though …

That’s about it. I think you will find the Cricket quite a bit lighter. The magazine is second nature once you get the pattern down and quickly becomes a non-issue. Cricket trigger is a little bit better feel although with work you can get the Edgun close.

Not sure of shot count on the .22 Compact. .177 is pretty high in the Compact at full power. It is the highest of my four bullpups.

100 shots count at 220b for a .177 compact at 18fpe shooting 10.3g, the .22 consume more air do to the shortness of the barrel and the larger caliber, if you want 45+ shots on the .22 compact lower to 26fpe.

Love the cricket magazine, can easily side the mag in the slot without a heavy spring loaded ball bearing that wear out the finish and start marking a rail road track on the mag inlet on the breech, I don’t remove the mag on the R3M I just load 3 at a time till it’s filled—just to keep it looking new! that’s just me. have you notice yet there’s so much loose wear and tear material on the bottom of the R3m mag slot—its going to look ugly after inserting the mag after thousand of times—-have that plastic mag available NOW! 😯
