Q:

Any interest in a group buy for custom bullet molds?

I recently talked to Jerry about copying the surefire design since he will no longer be making slugs. I know that NOE makes custom moulds of 15 or more. I am still waiting to hear back from Gary Barnes who Jerry said actually designed them, With his OK, I figured we could move foward if there is enough interest. So what do you guys think ?

I never did get GB’s new Florida address. Maybe its posted on his airgun webpage. He can also be contacted there. I haven’t been there in a long time now.

Please let us know what the cost of the mold will be, and if we can get a discount if we order more than X number. This would be a good way for me to start casting until I get myself a 257 barrel, and the proper mold for that.

I have one of each pm me an address and I will ship them out

I did talk to Gary and he is still busy setting up at his new location and there were also some problems with his email, where his provider didn’t have a backup made – he lost a lot of emails. So if you have Garys adress, just send him the slug and mention your from the Talontunes forum.

Ive got some. Have you talked to Gary ? I didnt even get a response to my email.

Ok, guys we might get some molds for the slugs. In order to do that we need some of the better quality slugs that Jerry so Gary can use them as samples for making the new molds. So anyone who still has slugs (one of each will be sufficient), please report here so we can get them to Gary.

Ain’t Got no lathe! Damn-it! 👿 and If I cuold get one, my shop is stuffed to the breaking point! 😆

Yep, Jerry was super to deal with. A shame it went south for them.

looks easy  so you guys with lathes let get on it :2:

Thanks,I appreciate that. I dont like to ask for help,so I guess Im timid on doing so,and easily discouraged if I catch flack for it. My setup shoots surefire slugs very well and since I dont have a place to shoot I figured I stockpile for when I do. I wish Jerry was still making them , even though I only made a few small orders from him,he always treated me like a best friend. Im going to miss dealing with him.

Cronos,

Your right, you gotta ask some questions for sure. Didn’t mean in the slightest to make you feel like no one wanted to answer your question or to feel bad that you asked. MAN, YOU GUYS ARE SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME ON THE YELLOW……SHEESH!!!! LOL….LOL!.

So here we go, the general rule is to NOT size down past .003″. So, a .260 bullet can be easily and accurately sized down to .258 or .257. Once you get into about .005″, you start to smear the bearing grooves on the bullet. NOW, THIS IS NOT 100% TRUE on every single bullet cast today. So its just a general rule. But that rule makes some serious sense once you start casting and sizing for yourself. Sizing SQUEESES a bullet down from one dimension to a smaller one. So obviously, the more you go, the more you SQUEEZE that bullet. Too much squeezing actually changes traits within that bullet

Sizing does 2 basic things. 1, it makes the bullet the OPTIMAL diameter for your bore to provide the most accuracy. 2, it ROUNDS the bullets diameter as many custom/factory molds are slightly OUT OF ROUND.

Now, this statement is just my opinion. But, maybe the guys using powder burners are sizing bullet down and “SUPPOSEDLY” having success because a powder burner arbitrates the bullet due to 10s (20,000+) of thousands of PSI vs us using about 3000-3200 psi. Our bullets need to start off a true as possible cause our forces or the lack thereof compared to a poweder burner need all the help it can get.

But LBT would be a good start for custom made .251-.252-.253-.254-.255 molds

Lol never going to sell my stash but willing to part with 2 of each for a mould

Exactly what Doug said,Thats the plan. 😀

quote Cronos600:

Knife,
I think your confusing my posts with some others.I have a .251 tjs 1-14 barrel and one of Dougs valves from doing my research and seeing that the lw barrels were not consistent for shooting slugs. I have found alot of info on .257s but not as much .251s. Being new to this and seeing how small a difference .006 is I thought they could be sized down. This is after finding conflicting information on this being a good idea or not. Also this thread was started by me in interest of being able to make surefire slugs which I knew from research and my own experience work great in my gun.At that time I knew nothing of Doug working on a better slug.I will continue to do my research and thank you and the other guys that have helped.

It’s very possible, as I am getting very old and get confused easily! 😳

The thing that made the surefire sluggs work in a choked barrel, (Most times), was the very thin driving bands, and the very deep groves. this allows the choke to swage the bands down without getting into the slugg it’s self. I don’t know if the bullet Doug is working with has this feature or not.

Why not just send Veril Smith a few surefires and have a mould made? I doubt that there is a patent on it.
