Q:

Cricket Sniping

I’ve been on a mission to quiet down my .22 STD Cricket. I’ve been shooting it at 700 fps with Neil’s shroud and 6 inch LDC. It is quiet with this setting but after awhile, you want to shoot the gun at it’s full capacity. I noticed with the 6 inch LDC shooting 880 fps, there’s still a great amount of muzzle blast. I even tried it with my 8 inch LDC and same thing. This past weekend, I’ve came up with different simple designs and finally completed the mod. I am now sniping from inside the house shooting 880 with no muzzle blast at all. Only thing I hear now is the hammer slap but until John or Ernest comes up with something to reduce that sound, the hammer slap can be loud as well. But bearable inside the house.

Still using Neil’s 6 inch LDC, I cut a 1 1/4 pvc tube 12 inches long. My biggest concern is the stability of the tube and the alignment. Luckily, Neil’s LDC slides right into the pvc tube perfectly and gives it the stability it needs. I actually had to put one layer of electrical tape at the front end and back end of the LDC so that it stays in securely. Also added a grub screw at the backend of the tube as a safety so that it doesn’t go flying off. At lowes I purchased rubber washers along with the aluminum ones. I could use the aluminum ones only but I figured the rubber piece will lessen the sound of the air impact. I epoxied the rubber to the aluminum washers. Also purchased 3/4 pipe foam to use as spacers between the washers. In total I have 5 washers inside on top of the baffles in Neil’s LDC. I am very happy with the outcome and the results of the sound. The additional 6 inches was what this gun needed.

I know it made the gun longer but shooting in the house on a caldwell deadshot, it doesn’t matter. There’s no clipping and still very accurate.

When all done you should try Dipping with Hydrographics to get a nice look.

Donny,

I went ahead and applied your technique for my Webley Alectro Ultra pistol. This is a nice pistol that I shoot indoor but its not shrouded and quite loud. I been looking to buy or build a shroud for it. Mine is a 0.177 caliber. One small difference in this shroud is that the hardware cloth I found at HD were too large for the job, so instead I got aluminum windows screen. I also used a 0.75 PVC pipe considering the pistol output size. Below is the product as its stands now, and works well. Cosmetics and better end cap to be done later

A look at the interior

The gun now is so quite that I was shooting 2 feet away from this little guy and it was just watching not spooked at all by the shots

I do think there is still room for improvement on my implementation but the sound volume is where I want it, so I think my next step would be the cosmetics and improving the snap in and out process so it can still fit in the nice pistol case it had.

And yes there was no clipping and shots were accurate!

Awny

Great job Donny

My cricket is already mouse fart quite when it comes to muzzel blast but I do have lots of hammer noise I may try this out. Did you make a shot vid with and w/out your new mod?

I’m wondering if I can come up with something similar for my 9mm 3d bullpup because it is beyond loud for backyard use and hell I will see if this mod will work on the P12 also.

I agree, after it’s painted, it looks like a regular shroud.

quote edguerra:

I used the same material (my wife had some leftover cabinet liner). I made it about 5 inches long and I like how it looks after it is painted. Great alternative for cheapskates like myself.

Good to hear Ed, did you use any different material than mine?

I couldn’t wait to make one so I tried this mod on my marauder and it definitely quieted it down alot (its already pretty quiet). I only hear the action. Now I have all the material needed for when my cricket gets here next week.

Great job Donny and thanks for sharing. Wow, when you said one layer of electrical tape and just one layer you where not kidding. In my trips to the hardware store I did find a suitable end cap 1″ in dia. and looks like the crown on your Ed gun when installed, I found it in the irrigation section of the local box store. Did you find an optimal distance from the end of the shroud to the baffle material? Did you experiment with different density or tightness of rolls on the baffle material?
