Cricket Sniping
I’ve been on a mission to quiet down my .22 STD Cricket. I’ve been shooting it at 700 fps with Neil’s shroud and 6 inch LDC. It is quiet with this setting but after awhile, you want to shoot the gun at it’s full capacity. I noticed with the 6 inch LDC shooting 880 fps, there’s still a great amount of muzzle blast. I even tried it with my 8 inch LDC and same thing. This past weekend, I’ve came up with different simple designs and finally completed the mod. I am now sniping from inside the house shooting 880 with no muzzle blast at all. Only thing I hear now is the hammer slap but until John or Ernest comes up with something to reduce that sound, the hammer slap can be loud as well. But bearable inside the house.
Still using Neil’s 6 inch LDC, I cut a 1 1/4 pvc tube 12 inches long. My biggest concern is the stability of the tube and the alignment. Luckily, Neil’s LDC slides right into the pvc tube perfectly and gives it the stability it needs. I actually had to put one layer of electrical tape at the front end and back end of the LDC so that it stays in securely. Also added a grub screw at the backend of the tube as a safety so that it doesn’t go flying off. At lowes I purchased rubber washers along with the aluminum ones. I could use the aluminum ones only but I figured the rubber piece will lessen the sound of the air impact. I epoxied the rubber to the aluminum washers. Also purchased 3/4 pipe foam to use as spacers between the washers. In total I have 5 washers inside on top of the baffles in Neil’s LDC. I am very happy with the outcome and the results of the sound. The additional 6 inches was what this gun needed.
I know it made the gun longer but shooting in the house on a caldwell deadshot, it doesn’t matter. There’s no clipping and still very accurate.

I would not try. NZ had one of the toughest and the most successful conservation regulations against invasive species.
Thanks for info Donny. My cricket is out now for tuning. I think I will try your method on some of my other louder guns and see how good it works.

New Zealand had no land snakes or even land mammals (predators nor prey) aside from bats. The reason behind this is the geographical location and extent as well as the geographical isolation. Given NZ location such animals would not have survived the many ice ages through history, and given it’s isolation over 1000 miles away from the nearest main land there would have been no way for these animals to repopulate. The same is not true for marine mammals or birds which flourish in NZ. BTW, there are other islands that are snake free for similar reasons such as Greenland and Ireland.
Australia on the other hand is a different beast. Large and diverse.

We are very lucky here in NZ that there is nothing “out there” that can kill us.. no snakes, gators, poisonous spiders etc at all so there is no worries strolling around in bare feet or swimming in the lakes and rivers etc..
Sweet, you know after I saw pictures of your property, I’ve been on the market for a country setting with water frontage. Lots of nice property available but my wife and I have been so busy, we haven’t had a chance to go look. One drawback to having water frontage here in Florida is that most likely there’s a gator in it so I’ll always be nervous if my kids or dog goes near the water.
This gator here scared the living shit out of me the other day. I was walking my dog by this man made water retention pond 3 houses down from me and all of a sudden I heard a big splash. Crapped my pants and then I looked around to see what the hell it was. This guy pops up. So most likely he was basking on the edge and when I came near, he jumped into the water.
I have spent a fair bit of time clearing over grown scrub around the lake and had a digger in to redirect a few of the natural water springs to encourage more trout to enter from the river so all starting to look great.. plenty of planting etc to still do but give it a few years it will take shape.
The house is so big… too big really… even got a room of my own for my armoury/tuning room.. I will get an email off to you soon as promised with photos of the new setup 🙂

The grand master himself Ernest Rowe recommended that lube. It’s called Super lube, great for every occasion. BTW how’s the hunting at the new crib Phil?
You are right it may work after all 🙂 I happened to have a 1 inch pvc laying around and slid the oem shroud in. Fits really good and if you cut out the bottom piece of the pvc along the shroud, it’ll slide in perfectly. Add one layer of electrical tape and it won’t fly off.
What if I machined/sand the tube to allow for the clearance on that side/area? may work. No?
