Cricket Sniping
I’ve been on a mission to quiet down my .22 STD Cricket. I’ve been shooting it at 700 fps with Neil’s shroud and 6 inch LDC. It is quiet with this setting but after awhile, you want to shoot the gun at it’s full capacity. I noticed with the 6 inch LDC shooting 880 fps, there’s still a great amount of muzzle blast. I even tried it with my 8 inch LDC and same thing. This past weekend, I’ve came up with different simple designs and finally completed the mod. I am now sniping from inside the house shooting 880 with no muzzle blast at all. Only thing I hear now is the hammer slap but until John or Ernest comes up with something to reduce that sound, the hammer slap can be loud as well. But bearable inside the house.
Still using Neil’s 6 inch LDC, I cut a 1 1/4 pvc tube 12 inches long. My biggest concern is the stability of the tube and the alignment. Luckily, Neil’s LDC slides right into the pvc tube perfectly and gives it the stability it needs. I actually had to put one layer of electrical tape at the front end and back end of the LDC so that it stays in securely. Also added a grub screw at the backend of the tube as a safety so that it doesn’t go flying off. At lowes I purchased rubber washers along with the aluminum ones. I could use the aluminum ones only but I figured the rubber piece will lessen the sound of the air impact. I epoxied the rubber to the aluminum washers. Also purchased 3/4 pipe foam to use as spacers between the washers. In total I have 5 washers inside on top of the baffles in Neil’s LDC. I am very happy with the outcome and the results of the sound. The additional 6 inches was what this gun needed.
I know it made the gun longer but shooting in the house on a caldwell deadshot, it doesn’t matter. There’s no clipping and still very accurate.

Donny you have done a fine job with this mod and thanks for sharing. How about capping it off with video that shows all the parts and pieces before and during fabrication, taking us through the final stages including fit up to the pcp? I’m sure it would be appreciated by all.

I am definitely proud of myself for this find and I thank everyone who chimed in. Past few days I’ve been having a blast with it, shooting outside my window at 6 am in the morning without worrying about the neighbors. As far as muzzle blast, nothing else could be done, it is as quiet as any high powered pcp can get. I was telling another member on here that it is quieter than my crosman 760 pumpmaster even when I only pump it 3x. It is still short and light enough for you to carry around in the woods. When you shoot the gun without a pellet, it hardly makes any noise. My farts are louder lol. Trust me, I’ve tested out this theory. Also when I shoot it without a pellet, the hammer slap is barely there. However, with a pellet, it increases a little.
One thing that surprised me a lot with this mod is that I didn’t need all the fancy baffle rings inside the shroud to make it quiet. I spent weeks playing with rubber washers, aluminum washers and could never get it to be quieter than the 3rd party LDCs. The idea of the hardware cloth came to me by accident. I first rolled up a wool cloth but the bullet path was not stable, so luckily we’ve been working on our garden and I saw that we still have a piece of hardware cloth left, so I rolled that into a roll then the wool cloth over it. Then I was like, let me try to roll the rubber shelf liner with the hardware cloth and bingo!
The only mod left is the end cap plug. I am hoping that it’ll still give me the low thump.

Good solution on the scratch possibility.
You may also consider putting foam in this new end cap if it turn out to behave like the washer case. Just thinking.

One thought Donny. Any chance the hardware cloth may relax and start blocking the pellet path after some usage?
After all not much force is holding that and it will be up to lots of psi during shooting, that may cause it to resettle. If so can it be strengthen?
Worse thing could happen is the cloth deflecting the pellet hitting the side of the exit hole causing large deflection that may send the pellet in unsafe direction!

PVC plugs sounds worth trying.
On the recording, the gun report is one of the hardest thing to capture accurately on tape.
Awny, if you slide the pvc tube over the OEM without the tape, there’s some wiggle room. Very little, so it won’t scratch the OEM shroud. I’ve taken it on and off almost 30x today and not a scratch.
I was thinking of going with a washer or something different for the end cap but there is a difference in sound when you use a washer compared to the pvc end cap. Definitely more favorable using the end cap.
This looks really nice, and with the tube covering the entire OEM shroud and in black it does not look odd.
Is that painted or you covered it with black tape?
