Q:

Developing a 1 piece stock … Done !

Looking to add some rigidity to the Talon frame I started looking at one piece laminated stocks. Wanting my own signature on the look I have been making scale drawings and have my first piece of wood cut.

I have been wanting a long range hunting rifle with a one piece stock for a long time now … this is what I have so far 🙂

The first 2 coats were absorbed by the wood so I steel wooled them down till I had a flat finish all over the stock.

This is the 3rd coat and it is finally starting to build .. I may have to knock this one back down with 0000 steel wool we’ll see.

She is still wet and showing signs of what she will look like when done.

Thanks Rabbits !

I planned to keep this for my squirrel rifle … then Dad saw it 😯

He has been talking a lot about that Royal Camo laminate so I am going to make up a one piece out of that and see if I can trade him 🙂

looking realy nice mate

The new palm sander worked great … but only on the flat areas like the forearm … all of those compound curves had to be done the hard way .. by hand.

My next one piece will be similar to this but with fewer complex curves .. more like I originally planned. I haven’t finished the “look” of the inside of the trigger guard on this one yet .. using that for a hanger right now and waiting for a jewelers saw to show up.

And your finishes look great 🙂

First coat .. it is absorbing most of this and drying slowly due to the humidity right now … heavy rains and flooding here.

The excessive moisture in the air is causing a mottled look to show up in spots … but I have to steel wool the entire stock after each of the first couple of coats anyway.

ye mate i only put two coats off grain sealer on then 4 coats off oil on my stocks lightly sanding down inbetween with 600 wet and dry sandpaper give,s a realy smooth and nice finnish

Thanks Rabbits ! My new Dewalt palm sander arrived yesterday so I can get all of the bandsaw marks out easier .. hope to have the first coat on it later today … I put on 12 very thin coats to prevent runs.

well mate i,m am impressed with this one . welldone

Down to final sanding, inletting the trigger the last little bit for full travel, and on to the finishing booth for 12 coats. Last pics before putting on finish. I think this is going to look real nice on the Compact .25 when I get the polyurethane on it 🙂

Thanks FF 😀

I am always amazed with what the Members of this forum create .. inspirational ya know 🙂

Here is a good example .. where the trigger guard hump leads into the forearm you can see a line across the stock .. I can’t see that when looking at it directly … but the camera sees it and it will show up when the finish goes on.

The new bandsaw is awesome .. I cut the angle at the muzzle end of the stock, reduced the thickness of the forearm area full length, and trimmed the back of the stock for the bottle in just minutes.

Other progress has this stock very near it’s final shape soon it will be on to the finishing process my favorite part.

Here’s a tip for you .. the eyes can fool you when looking for mistakes during the shaping process .. I take lots of photo’s at each stage and bring them up on the computer in high resolution and find mistakes that my eyes alone couldn’t. Then I mark them on the stock with a pencil and it’s back to shaping again 🙂

I wondered about the weight of this one piece laminated stock vs. the factory plastic grip set and was pleasantly surprised to find that the one piece only weighs 3.75 oz more ! 😀

Bottle opener it is ! 😆 😆 😆

Don’t have much use for a can opener……bottle opener would be nice though. 😛

Sounds interesting.
