Q:

Developing a 1 piece stock … Done !

Looking to add some rigidity to the Talon frame I started looking at one piece laminated stocks. Wanting my own signature on the look I have been making scale drawings and have my first piece of wood cut.

I have been wanting a long range hunting rifle with a one piece stock for a long time now … this is what I have so far 🙂

They’d have to be to get them in that little trigger gaurd hole. 🙂

Trigger inletting … best to start from a known location and work your way out.

I drew in my grip shape from my scale drawings and then made a 1/2 inch hole thru the sides of the stock and a 3/8ths inch hole from the top channel down to open up the stock for the trigger.

If you can see in the hole in the pic … the skeletonized trigger is in there 😀

Now I can safely work on grip shape, trigger guard shape, and anything else I like because that trigger is safely located.

Now I can start the major shaping and inletting of the trigger and pistol grip … finally some FUN ! 😀

Thanks Rabbits !! 😀

Stock is now drilled and countersunk for the pistol grip screw … very important on this operation to first drill a 3/16ths pilot hole with a steel bit not a wood bit … wood bits like to follow the rotation of the drill press and wander to one side on a long unpiloted drill.

Guess how I know that 😳 😆

First the pilot hole from the top then a 1/4 inch wood bit all the way thru to the bottom of the pistol grip.

Next start at the bottom of the pistol grip with a 1/2 inch wood bit and make the countersink for the bolt head and washers supplied by airforce.

Drilled her right down the middle 😀

getting there mate . u have done a few things i haven,t done
i didn,t make any jigs to my own cost i buggerd up the second bit off wood i use for a stock but instead off binning it i got a rosewood dowl amd epoxcied it in problem solved looked sweet aswel .
i think i,m going to enjoy this project u have comeing on mate
keep it up

Here’s the jig on the press .. it automatically aligns the pistol grip screw for the correct angle … getting this right the first time is paramount … or your wood is scrap … wonder how I know that 😳 😆

Bedding channel .. deeper at the back and shallower at the front. Getting it centered is the biggie.

The next step before going any further is to drill the hole where the pistol grip will bolt up to the frame. I’ve built a jig for that purpose so I don’t have to worry about hitting the correct angle anymore … just pop the jig onto the drill press and punch out the screw hole 🙂

I keep an extra standard Talon frame on hand so I don’t have to disassemble a rifle every time I want to bed a new piece.

The front ends of my forearms and this one piece have a double reversed cut to them … part of making the design my own instead of just copying what else I have seen others do.

Compare the bit to the frame to the stock … slowly but surely it drops right down in there 🙂

Bedding the frame … I use a tire depth gauge to get the frame seated properly … I’ll bed it about a 32nd of an inch more than necessary so that final sanding doesn’t pop the frame back above the wood line.

It would look really awesome with the purple talon. 😀

Thanks Rabbits ! The purple saphire has a higher cost over here too but I just had to have it 🙂

I just had a feeling that a one piece would be worth the effort.

Pulaskius i have made a few one piece stocks now and u will find they ain,t thatr much harder to make and there worth the hassel
i love the laminate u use mate i,.ve tried to get some shipped to scotland but the cost is shocking . sweet stuff mate
