Q:

Developing a 1 piece stock … Done !

Looking to add some rigidity to the Talon frame I started looking at one piece laminated stocks. Wanting my own signature on the look I have been making scale drawings and have my first piece of wood cut.

I have been wanting a long range hunting rifle with a one piece stock for a long time now … this is what I have so far 🙂

Link to other stock supplier. I had some issues with these Guy’s in getting an order out of them … after being paid it took 3 weeks and several phone calls to finally get my order shipped out.

I’ll order from them again .. but I am going to ask if what I want is in stock and exactly when that will ship before I give them the money again. Just a heads up so you don’t get lost in their system like I did.

You’re right ! I have only been working it outside but still the dust gets in my face. Next trip to town I’ll get a good respirator.

The glue in the laminate is the biggest danger especially if it is an epoxy. Even if you aren’t allergic to it right off continued exposure WILL make you have a reaction to it. Once you have that first reaction it gets worse from there.

It’s like everyone can tolerate the epoxy to a certain exposure level and once that is reached you’ll start having toxic reactions every time you are around it ❗

Once you cross that threshold there is no going back .. after that any exposure is going to set off a reaction. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks Adam !

That looks great.

I hope you are wearing a filter while sanding that stuff. The glues and dust from it can be really nasty to the lungs and immune system.

Progress so far it’s getting there slowly but surely. I haven’t decided how I want to proceed from here because I think if I take my time and do this right it’ll make a nice piece .. back to making up drawings to see what I can come up with 🙂

I bought gunstock blanks from Boyds and another outfit that I will have to look up for you … pre-colored and they come in a size for making deer rifle stocks.

I bought 7 of them 10 months ago and started the learning process .. totally destroyed 3 1/2 of those before I got my first forearm like I wanted it 😆

Boyds is a good place to get them just have to catch the color you want in stock … they go fast like .25 caliber Kodiaks ❗

😆 Lesson learned ???

The ply I have is 3/4″ baltic birch, 13 layers.
I was thinking of doing it up and then give it some ebony stain and some clear poly on top.
We shall see, I think it might be pretty cool looking.

Make sure it is exterior grade first … otherwise it will delaminate over time ..

Great idea Saw .. I looked at some Poplar at Lowes and thought of laminating that with marine grade epoxy then finish the stock in camo paint.

Kind of hate to paint that laminated I have now 😆

I was thinking of doing a 1 piece stock.
My thoughts were to bolt a flat plate much like the trigger guard with out it, just a flat piece to hold the trigger group in and not to worry about it.
In other words take the stock trigger guard and cut it where it leaves the frame and goes around the trigger.
This way you could remove the one piece stock with no worries.
I have some 13ply baltic birch scraps and was thinking of glueing 3 layers together, and milling accordingly.
Looks great Palaskius, great work
