Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. 😉

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… 👿

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. 🙄

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. 😉

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. 😉

Cheers from Trygve 😀

To be continued……….. 😀

Thanks Nik, – comments much appreciated……. 😀

Fresh air is always good my friend, – “unbiased” is related to the experience I have had, – others may have different experiences and different conclusions as a result….. 😉

As for your new home, – Congratulations, – it looks fantastic !!! 😀

But how do you plan to shoot from that terrace ? The backstop doesn’t look the safest as I see it……. 🙄

Cheers from Oslo where shooting too much has taken it’s toll. I now have an infection in my right arm and a swelling of the size of a tennisball on my right elbow………. 😥

I must be getting too old for this………. 😳

As is mine, in SS.

I forgot to mention in the other thread that my R3 from Estonia doesn’t have that “made in Estonia” etched in, just made in Russia???

Can confirm that the new bolt are stainless, just taken delivery of an R3.

Zocoloco,

I also wanted to know about any other rust issues, I have noted your bolt. Are both guns having issues?
Thanks.

I understand Ed is using a different metal for the bolts on the new guns to eliminate that problem.

H 😯 😯 T

Hi,

I clean de barrel after about 500 shots, and only with a dry tissue.

regards, Filip

Zocoloco,
What crony are you using and how often do you clean the barrels. My Edgun is on order and I wanted to know what gives the best results. This maybe be a question that ED could answer.

I also wanted to know about any other rust issues, I have noted your bolt. Are both guns having issues?
Thanks.

Great thread. read it from start to finish.

Trygve,

Please, look upon your thread as a priceless gem which we, mere mortals, hardly deserve. Your unbiased attitude is something nearly extinct in those vulgarly commercialized times of ours, and it is quite reassuring to have a “breath of fresh air” from time to time.

Friend Nik, from the terrace of his new home, some 1000 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Pirin Mountain.

😀

I Missed out again on the last batch! Damn. Glad that the R3 is still the go to bull pup. I still want it in a multishot too though.

ED – that prototype from a few years ago is still stuck in my mind. What a rate of fire!

Great thread. read it from start to finish.

Hi guys,

Another 5000 pellets (approximately) through both guns and they are still keeping well….. 😀

I have moved target out to some 70 yds, – and I am still not able to tell which gun is best in terms of accuracy…..

Both deliver sub 10 mm CTC five shot groups if I do my job. The occasional flyer is there, – but that is not the fault of the guns…. 😉

Lady Cricket is at her best with JSB 15.8, – and delivers a velocity very close to the R3 shooting JSB18s…….

Both guns seem to deliver better accuracy than my Daystates….

As Maverick has diasappeared completely, – it is not easy to tell whether or not increased power is recommendable for her ladyship. My guess is still that she may have been set up for the 15.8s and that she performs at her best with that pellet……..

I have done a slight modification to the R3 based on OldGoats recommendation. I have sanded down the front edge of the aluminium plate situated just underneath the bolt assembly, – and also added some whithe Lithium grease to the bolt action including the top of the said aluminium plate and the surface of the metal “lump” travelling with the bolt. The bolt is now travelling more smoothly, – and it is not too bad. The bore where the bolt travels still looks (and feels) uneven, – but is much smoother than before……

I’m planning a complete shotstring to be chronied for both guns in near future. I’m curious to find out what they look like now that the guns have settled in…… 😉

Just recently discovered that the R3 breech blocks don’t appreciate marine environment much. Surface rust develops much more quickly than on guns properly blued (HWs). Seems to me that the R3 breech blocks may have been “anodized” in some way and not properly blued…

No big deal, – but care should be taken. I have applied some chain saw oil to the surface of the breech blocks. It seems to do the trick……

To be continued………. 😀

Nope, you’re right rocketron..

Zoco, please give more detailed research!!! 😀

Not a lot to report really…….. 😀

Both guns are keeping well, – a few thousand shots now and nothing has changed…….

But where the heck is Maverick ???? 🙄

Cheers from Trygve in +10, rain, rain, rain and veeery windy …… 😥

(PS: Just realized this thread has reached the top ten in terms of views, – so Kazzz you may be right. Apparently a lot is reading. Not good for Maverick this, – but I would imagine Ed is happy… 😉 )

Hi All

Have we lost the plot, I thought this tread was about the matador v the Cricket or am I mistaken. Please don’t get mad at me I just thought.

May be I should do less thinking.

No, rocketron, we haven’t lost it. A good plot allways has sub-plots that are beneficial to the WHOLE story.

My very best regards,

Nik 🙂

Hi Ted,Any word on your new R3,hope another shipment comes in.
I`m waiting on a .22 long which I maytrigger try converting to a benchrest

Maybe be better off w/TM 1000.I was at Holbrook when Mark Normindin

Mark,

I will buy a Morena when it comes out. That’s the Matador benchrest gun! It’s not so easy to convert a bullpup into a benchrest gun. They are both desinged different.

I would not go with the TM1000. My friend has one (one of the first batch I’ll have to say) but in .22 to shoot competition with and.. it’s very dissapointing.
The inertiaspring broke now for the 3th time after 300 shots. It will not fill anymore and.. Our guess is that the gun is only tested at 50 yards / .20 cal. There was never a test (as Martin told us) at 100m in .20 or .22!
