Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. ๐Ÿ˜‰

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. ๐Ÿ™„

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. ๐Ÿ˜‰

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cheers from Trygve ๐Ÿ˜€

To be continued……….. ๐Ÿ˜€

You’re absolutely right my friend……

Sorry Yoda…… ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ณ

And the alanscrew is as round inside as you can get it. Sad, because that screw has to be removed to slide the bolt fully out of the housing. Right now it’s stuck where it is. So much for the “easyness” of taking an EDgun apart…

This type of screw seems veeery familiar.

I think Ed should consider investing in a much stronger metal alloy in the screws all over the Matador.

Hey zoco how did yo obtain the cricket rifle if you don’t mind me asking?
Thanx in advance.

quote Ed:

They do, really. But what is so terrible in it. The view?.

ED, – please read again:

The action is not smooth, has nothing to do with appearance………

The bolt does not travel freely, – it’s not at all like the actions you tested in your videos…….

I would have understood if coming out of a backyard blacksmith in China, – but this is something else.

Is it not ??? ๐Ÿ˜‰

As for the 300 bar thing, – I fully agree with you. No advantage as I see it, – and bad economy …….

They do, really. But what is so terrible in it. The view? Well, the diameter of the whole in the breech is normal, it means that the bolt is a little smaller in diameter then the whole, but they both are cylinder. The marks on the surface looks terrible, I admit it but that is only look, if you will try to make it smooth by polishing it, you just will change the diameter and the situation will be even worse, some of Russian guys did it and then had to buy a new breech.

As for 300 bar. First — if you have your gun working from 300 bar, it means the only thing, you can feel it up to 300 bar just once, and then you have to refeel the tank again. The second, it sounds strange but you will have twise as less number of shots from 300 down to 200 bars then from 200 to 100 bars. The work with hight pressure it no effective from the point of view of air consumption, everybody knows and and the proclamation about standard pressure of 300 bars is just a kind of adv nothing else. You can feel Matador with 300 bar, no problem, no explosion, nothing but uneffective air consumption.

Hi Huub,

Good to see you ! ๐Ÿ˜€

And I’ll check with Egon. I’ll see him on Friday……

Yepp, – I feel priviliged to be able to spend time with these two Russian beauties, – both at the same time. They look so similar in many ways, – but that’s on the outside. On the inside they are full of surprises……… ๐Ÿ˜‰

ED has requested that I make my own judgement, and that I don’t listen to hearsay. So when Voda came up with a thread on this forum related to problems with smoothness of the R3 bolt action, – I immediately jumped because I too have problems with it and it seems very few others do…

For those who did not read Voda’s thread, – here’s a short recap:

My bolt action is not at all smooth. Not in any of my two R3s……

So I dismanteled the bolthouse assembly. What I found was a bolt that looked like this:

It looks like it has been grinded by a whetstone without water…….

And the alanscrew is as round inside as you can get it. Sad, because that screw has to be removed to slide the bolt fully out of the housing. Right now it’s stuck where it is. So much for the “easyness” of taking an EDgun apart…

Based on Voda’s findings, – I tried to peep into the bore where the bolt travels to see what it looked like. This is what I found:

It’s a crappy picture, but also difficult to take because of the need to focus on the right spot and also get some light in there. You can clearly see the walls of the bore inside that slot. And that is not a pretty sight unfortunately….

I feel sorry for that bolt….

And in my opinion ED should never have let that gun leave his premises.

I’m now eagerly awaiting his comments as to how/why this could happen…..

There must be an explanation for it. I just beg and pray that no other R3s out there look the same……….

We’ll see………

hi Trygve,

I’m glad you like your new toy!
Please ask Egon to check the packages i sent to him. The manual should be in there. Although it’s a very small book and it’s in russian.
I do have here the certificate of the rifle. if you can mail your adress i will post it. I don’t know if the certificate mates yours or the other cricket.

I think the cricket and matador are pretty equal in shooting behavior. It’s nice to see this test you did!

Overall i preffer the Matador, mostly for the looks and the model of the stock. I’ve had about 5 edguns, and still love them! specialy the lelya .22 ๐Ÿ˜€

I do think the biggest pro’s on the cricket are:

Multishot (Ed should fix this)
300 bar filling
Very, very quiet

cheers Huub

Zoco,

You can fill the cricket at 300 bar!ยต

Here you can find a shotstring of a friend of mine his cricket (sold already):

(it’s in dutch)

Zoco,

I can feel your pain, I’m on the same boat with you…….but you still shooting your airgun on your backyard………. where I lived…. it’s illegal to discharge and paint ball gun or airgun in the city, and the weird thing is…… in City code does not have any rule for it (City ordinance)

once time, I call a local police station, and ask about discharge airgun in the backyard.

First officer said he’s not sure about it………. 10 min later I called again

Second officer said it’s illegal, then I asked him, if it’s illegal then base on what city ordinance code…… He could not answer my question, then he hanged up the phone

Couple week later, I send another e-mail to DA officer, and ask the same question, DA reply to me it’s illegal, then I asked him again, base on what city ordinance….. He never reply my e-mail until today

is it weird or not?

Ta

The sad fact is that hunting with airguns is not allowed in Norway……. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

We have no limits on power and no FAC requirements for AirGuns at all like in the UK, and we have all the wilderness/wildlife you can dream of……

But still no hunting…..

I am not the only one who think this is sad and also a bit weird.

Paperclipping is all we can do (legally), – so shooting tight groups on paper is what we practise for……. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Maybe a holiday abroad soon ???? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Zoco,

it’s a very good review, please keep more coming ๐Ÿ˜›

it’s very hard to choose which one to own only, just take 2 of them if you can ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜› like Zoco (if you have $$)

Synopsys,

It’s not hard to pick which one for pest control, just bring two gun with you ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜› …. two gun is better than one……. I guess

Ta

100%, I didn’t mean to diminish the group quality at all. If anything they are near identical. The best of both worlds so to speak…

The ONLY bad thing I think of is the toughness of the decision you will need to make in choosing which rifle to grab when a pest needs to be dispatched. ๐Ÿ˜•

Two very capable rifles right there. ๐Ÿ˜€

I forgot to mention that the Cricket groups were the first shots ever with that gun. I think we need to give the gun some credit. It was shipped in parts and assembled here and not tested before I zeroed in and shot those groups…

Also I would like to mention that I have no idea about the exact fps. My guess is based on the sound of impact in my metal target housing and the time from shot release to impact. I have a feeling it delivered some 30/50 fps lower than the R3. But that’s guesswork only……

One of these days I’ll run through complete shotstrings with a chronograph. I am looking forward to that exercise…….. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Does anybody know the volume of the reservoir and correct fill pressure ?

Thanks…. ๐Ÿ˜€

quote synopsys:

Is it me or did the Cricket group walk to the left between target #2 and #4? ๐Ÿ˜•

Could be a coincidence, – could be me, – could be wind, – could be whatever. Need to repeat these tests a few times indoors and away from climatic fluctuations.

ED’s comment about temp changes may also play a part, – but quite honestly I have never seriously tested under extreme conditions. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I have shot in temperatures down to minus 15 or so (Daystates), – but never serious group shooting. I must admit that change in POI was not noticed, – or if noticed, I blamed it on my own shooting and nothing else…..

Something to take onboard and may be try myself. After all I do have two std R3s which could be shot side by side, – but the thought of putting one in the freezer is not very appealing I must admit……. ๐Ÿ˜‰
