Q:

EDgun Matador R3 versus Kalibr Cricket, my comparison….

Hi guys,

Warning for those who don’t like images:

This is going to be a thread with lots of graphics….. πŸ˜‰

As promised, I’ll try to share with you my personal opinion and findings while comparing these beauties:

As some of you may know, I have two Matador Std R3s and I have one Cricket (with access to another one). All are cal.22……

My wait for my Matadors should be well documented on this very forum…..

The Crickets were a part of a group buy masterminded from Europe somewhere. The Crickets were shipped in parts to Norway and reassembled by my good blueprinting friend Egon Olsen. In the process he had to remove a “restrictor” screw that had been put into the guns before shipment. Most probably because of Power limitation rules at origin….

The Crickets arrived with no documents whatsoever. No instructions, – no nothing. I don’t think this is standard procedure though…..

The Cricket weighs less than the R3, – and is approx 5 cm shorter. Not a lot, – but overall it makes the Cricket even easier to handle than the already tiny R3….

The side by side comparison was done from my modest little shooting table at my summerhouse:

– and the shooting range is here, – with my target set up at 46mts:

Why 46 mts ? Simply because I could not pull my shooting stand further back right now. A huge tree has fallen during winter, and all the branches have taken up my space… πŸ‘Ώ

First problem: How to fill the f…. Cricket ?

The fillprobe nut is so tiny that a standard foster coupling gasket will not seal. The entire probe is small, – and you fear you may break it while trying to tighten it:

The above (sorry for the image quality) is a comparison between ED’s, Cricket’s and Falcon’s fill probes. You can probably see what I mean….

As I could not make a standard Fostergasket fit, Egon had to make special gaskets that we fitted into the Foster coupling itself. Not an ideal solution, – and I have no clue how long it will last…….. πŸ™„

On the fill probe: Matador 1, Cricket 0 points.

Air filling:

I honestly dont like any of the solutions that these two manufacturers have chosen………..

The Cricket people have come up with the worst. To expose the hole for the fillprobe, – you have to slide forward the tip of the reservoir. But that stupid tip is retained by a spring, – and slides back with a smack once you let go:

If you’re not careful when taking the fillprobe back out, the tip will spring back and ruin the fill probe O-rings faster than I can say my name….

While filling, the “tip” rests on the previously mentioned small nut. And there’s not a lot clearance. So a bigger nut (for those with lathe skills), – is not going to help you much. A thicker nut might…….

In short: A very stupid filling system, – BUT once you know how to operate it and care is taken, – at least it covers the hole when filling is over.

The Matador does not come with anything to cover the filling hole at all:

I use tape right now, – but a plug of some sort would be good….. πŸ˜‰

My preferred system would be that of Falcon:

The tip of the reservoir has been turned into a curled “collar” that you rotate to expose the hole. Simple, easy and effective. And few moving parts that may break or go astray……….

Now, I have no idea how much air I can fill into the Cricket, – and the gun gauge certainly does not help much:

I trust the gauge on my fillkit, – and 3000 psi is roughly on the border between green and yellow…….

Points for airfill procedure: Matador 1, Cricket 0. In my opinion….. πŸ˜‰

Cheers from Trygve πŸ˜€

To be continued……….. πŸ˜€

Shokran Naser bro for the on going translation.. πŸ™‚

@3:40 lol, He wants to discuss the externals & he says the Cricket is 14 shots & the Ed is single shot & he wants to stress on single shot. And how guys there like magazines & he himself doesn’t mind a mag with even 40 shots & of course it carries a couple of mags in the stock(I disagree but than again I wont comment for now, lets just see what he says at the end).

*(Talking about the stocks)
The cricket fits nicely & rest nicely too while the edgun, I had to sand a little on both sides so my hand is comfortable & straight & that’s the way I hold a rifle & shoot & im not talking about others.

5:55* He shows how the screw holding the stock on the cricket is very well held & holds it tight while on the Edgun you can see there is a little play down at the breech & that’s the new Edguns R3’s that just arrived to Kuwait & people can go to the shop & see for themselves.

@6.26 the cricket stock falls off (he says sorry I had it ready & opened)(lol how ironic) anyway he was talking about cleaning the rifle just before that happened & how its important cause shooters want to clean their rifles. With the cricket is very easy & you just need to unscrew the front shroud vs on the ed you need to unscrew the front shroud which is not even easy using your hands & might need a tool where u might scratch it & again later using a wrench to open the 2nd part which is the front baffle, so much more difficult.

He shows 3 parts for Ed vs a single part removal for Cricket & he also says the shroud on the cricket is more quiet than the Ed.

@8:50 hes going to talk about the internals, mechanism etc…

Sorry I just saw the thread & I am watching the youtube video now. so watch this post as I update it until I watch it all.

What a waste, he kept bragging the first 2 minutes about why he is making a comparison between the two & how he has the right to do so, just like people doing it on youtube bla bla bla.

* He also says that he’s not here to make any accuracy comparison & both are very accurate rifles & that he wants to do a “mechanical” comparison between the two.
* He’s saying that many people don’t know much about these rifles & get all upset & angry when it starts leaking air & that he fully understand their anger especially since these sell for 700 Kuwaiti dinars which is $2460, both of them cost roughly the same.

@3:00 Again bragging about how people “might mean customers” come & ask him which is better this or that & today he’s going to tell us about each one & people can than choose what suits them.

@3:20, hes going to switch the camera so you guys can see the inside “parts” that make each rifle.

Ed, I am interested to know how the Matador will perform in a Kuwaiti environment. I was stationed there, I can say that it is one of the most dusty inhabited places on the planet. There is just dust everywhere, no matter the filtration, so just imagine how it is when shooting outdoors. However, there were no airguns when I was there.

Have no idea but based on the letters, like this from Kuwait users, I think everything is OK:

Dear Eduard,

It was a pleasure meeting you in Nuremburg IWA 2013 exhibition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support and useful information that you shared with me in regard of your magnificent piece (Matador) wish I consider it the ( AK47 of Air Rifle World).
Wishing that we meet again in similar events.

Please keep in touch and looking forward to deal with you in the future.

Best Regards,

In my opinion the guy needs to have a little more respect for the rifles, I lost count of how many times he drops parts and dings one part against another.. If he was a dealer in my country I certainly wouldn’t buy a “new” gun from him or for that matter any gun he touched! He is very rough with both guns and no doubt his repair shop makes good use of those hammers on the tool wall too..

I got translation to Russian, pour one but understandable. The main point — the claim to the Kuwait dealer. I think that it just games. I heard also that this guy is involved in selling Crickets somehow. So I am not surprised.

Calling Naser… bro you can please translate for us what the Kuwaiti said about Cricket and Edgun?

I think is here one member from kuwait may be he can translate it to “normal language” πŸ˜‰

I have a Matador. There for, I declare the Matador the winner.

Can someone translate the basics of what he is saying and post the text? πŸ™‚ I think he is from Kuwait. Kmhusain?

Thanks in advance….

quote octavius:

That’s just how they talk. Loud with a lot of hand gestures, kinda like Italians.
I had to stop a couple min in but will resume later. He obviously liked Criket(Edgun 2.5) style one piece shroud
and more room around grip area on Cricket

How did it end up? I got tired by one minute mark. ThereΒ΄s something to be said about a shoot-out done in some Middle -Eastern language. That guy sounds pretty angry at both of those guns… 😯

quote SECoda:

Now this is a great link. A young Ed and the Russian bullpup story. I just knew he must have had a blog/history out there somewhere.
