Q:

fixing shroud

I need to shift or move my shroud to the right about the 1/4 inch. I’m wondering if could just warm or heat up back of shroud and try to move it that way.
I’m not sure how these are built so I could have it all wrong to begin with. Could I get the back end hot enough to get the front to move over a bit to get it to stop clipping.

Must take a lot of time.. this Crickets a couple years old.
I gave up worrying about it. I may get the barrel polished by Ernest.. maybe that will also make it slide easier.

Yea they get sloppy after time….

I would be willing to bet you would be sorry if you dremel your shroud also. It is supposed to be a tight fit! I had a hard time getting mine on and off at first too, but as they said with more and more uh.. strokes, it becomes looser all the time. Enjoy it while its tight 😉

Do it like Zonk said 😀 I do it too and now shroud sliiiide nice 😉

I wouldn’t do it either. I believe it’ll pull off smoothly over time. Just keep a little silicone grease on it.
Work it back and forth like you did when you were 16……….

Hell I don’t know? OCD perhaps. I know its not hurting anything, just bugs me. I’m going to try and exercise restraint. I probably won’t take the Dremel to it for fear of messing it up. It’s just a possibility I might. Don’t waste your time trying to save me from myself lol. I appreciate it though.

Silicone greased the hole.. Still tight as a drum. But it does slide off “smoothly” now while I tug on it. Without the grease it would chatter and stutter while pulling it off.
I may… *MAY, take the Dremel with a circular fine grit sandpaper head and see if I can open her up a hair. I’m just hoping my Dremel skills are up to uniformly enlarging the hole and not making it some funky oval or something. I want the barrel to still contact the shroud end cap the whole way around, just not grab it like it does now- wishful thinking most likely.

Don’t do it Haggard. Please tell us why the hang up with nice tightly fitted shroud?
I’m trying to help.

Nope. Works well, been doing it that way for a year now. VERY light coat, and it’ll slid easy. Just try it.

Lead dust doesn’t cling and collect to that grease like a magnet? It sounds like the grease would work for me as well but I see my end cap scraping the grease off every time I pull the shroud off and collecting the grease on the inside. Over time I’d have a nasty lead/grease sludge that would not be easy to get out of the end of the shroud.

My shroud is tight also. When I take mine off I put some silicone grease on my finger and wipe it all along the barrel. The shroud slides on and off nice and easy after that.

Since it doesn’t seem to be such an uncommon thing and its not really causing any malfunction, I’ll just put it out of mind. I thought maybe mine was a special case that shouldn’t be the way it is. As for my cleaning routine, I like to keep as much of the rifle protected with ballistol as I can. So even though its not necessary, I like the barrel to be coated under the shroud as well as the rest of the rifle. I use a bore snake for the barrel that works fantastic. I just remove the shroud to not have to deal with that straw stuff. Boresnake is stiff enough that it feeds through the barrel quickly and easily, and with the shroud off, the whole process is over in no time for me.

I wouldn’t worry about the shroud being almost too tight. I think its a good thing as it would keep things snug. If its not clipping your golden. Keep shroud on when cleaning it. You don’t need to remove it to make a good job cleaning it. If your cleaning tools require you to remove the shroud then I suggest getting other tools to do it.

Another shroud question-
I have a Cricket .25 skeleton stock serial #879, one of the older ones.
From all the Cricket videos I’ve watched, the shroud slides right on and off. My shroud is tight trying to slide on/off from beginning to end. I have to pull/push it on/off with a twisting motion. Here’s some pics to illustrate. I can literally stick the shroud on the last inch of the barrel and it will hold itself level in place. Anyone else’s shroud tight and does my barrel receiving end cap look the same as yours?

Same on my 25 Standard Synthetic. After the threads disengage while taking it off I could probably pick up the gun by the shroud and the barrel not slide out. I do keep it lubed a little but I kinda like the snug fit. It should help in preventing baffle clipping.

Tried cleaning it with Ballistol. Didn’t make a difference. That hole just seems a hair too small. Anyone have any recommendations on how to open it up tad? I hate having to fight with that thing when giving the rifle a thorough cleaning or cleaning the barrel.

You could use a hair dryer to heat shroud up a bit. That would help. Don’t think it would take much
