Hammer fix

Lately I’ve noticed with 25 Vulcan the 40-50 and beyond yard shots where not slam dunk anymore. Well this morning after a horrendous outing I figured I’d better look into it.
I whipped out chronograph and viola the answer was clear. First it was shooting 880-990 to start off with. Last time I checked it was 930 or so. So I took your the hammer screw and was able to move velocity around but not consistent at all. Extreme spread was 25 and then some. My 80 yard groups showed it too. So I took it apart but had to reverse drill out two of the screws holding the side plate. (thanks Zonk for the 2 spares you sent me) I took hammer out and wiped it clean. Then I noticed the one end where trigger catches hammer was sharp. So I smoothed out the edges using a drill to spin hammer and taking some cloth to the edge.

While I had it apart I figured I might try to do something with hammer spring too

I put it to the test through chrony and settled for 920 with es of 2 with 20 shots tethered to my tank. Major improvement to say the least.
I went and did a accuracy test and it puts 3 pellets through a hole not much bigger than the pellet at 50 yards.
I’m so happy to have my Vulcan back to its usual self.
The piece on the spring is a rubber grommet that you use to insulate a hole to pull wires through. I can’t hear the spring at all. Problem is my gun got louder. Lol

OK thanks. Clear.

ok guys I am confused now, does the plenum(the chamber with regulated air) or somewhere in that region needs some insert to stop the air resonating there or (forget the previous and) the ping is now the hammer spring and the other long (which needs the o ring inserted), reading conflicting reports.
I guess I want to leave the brass anti bounce device (if that is it) as it is.

but I cant believe sticking rubber grommets will not interfere with the guns firing cylcle and internals/reproducibility.

:hoot:

Sometimes.…the air cylinder will “resonate” with a ping sound…but not always. If you stop the ping noise at the source, there may not be a problem.

IF…and it’s a big if, it is easily solved by putting a piece of silicone hose midway down the tube to stop the walls from vibrating. Just buy a foot of silicone tubing 1″ to 1 1/4″ in diameter, cut a piece two to three inches long, slice it length-ways, roll it up and slide it half way down the tube. Replace the air gauge and re-fill. That’s it. Just don’t do it if it isn’t needed!

you can make stuff from PEEK not delrin, should be stronger I think. I am sure it is more expensive though.

lurker it will rain in there if you leave it like that.

Good idea Hoot:
The reason I asked eelect about Silicone is the NEW Grommets I got are different from what I had used in the past. These new one may be made synthetically as they are softer and shinny.

OH SHIT…good thing you asked…IT MOVED โ—
There is room for more but they do slow down the Spring on mine at least. I had the whole area sprayed with Silicone some time ago but cleaned it out in favor of polishing the hammer.

:hoot:

AND…since the grommet moves a bit…if one gromment is good, might two be better????

:hoot:

ps: Can you show us a pic of the setup, and I’d like to see a pic of the grommet BEFORE you put it on/modify it just to be certain I get the right one. Next to a ruler would be great!!!

I had to trim the outer portion of grommet. So you can experiment with different kinds. Mine is pretty tight around spring and doesn’t seem to want to go anywhere

I finally got some 3/8″ (9.5mm) Grommets ๐Ÿ˜ณ edited to 3/8″
Way to go eelect
Damned if it don’t work โ— โ—
Of course I have further comments and questions though.
1) Did you put Silicone on the Grommet or Hammer Spring โ“
2) Did you try moving it to different positions โ“
3) Does it stay put wherever you positioned it โ“
4) Did you have to screw in the HST adjustment further than before to get your required FPS โ“
5) Was the twang all gone before you put the side plate back on โ“

Excuse all my questions as this really works and I want to make sure I get full advantage of it.
My preliminary findings are:
Grommet all the way forward did reduce the twang but not completely for me. Probably 98%.
Gradually moving it to the rear got a little better but then worse until I got it all the way back. But cocking actually moved it forwards a little. That’s partly why I ask about using Silicone.
I think the rear most position quieted mine the most. And it ends up separating the cocking lever spring from the hammer spring. Oh, I had already positioned an A008 o-ring in the middle/ center to the cocking lever spring like you also suggested.
My HST is about 1 turn further in to get nar my previous FPS.
I haven’t put the side plate back on yet as I want to observe if the grommet moves as I do further testing.
So, what do you think about a spritz of Silicone on the grommet:?:

Update: Velocity HOLDING โ—
My previous hammer polishing PLUS a new Breech O-Ring did wonders.
SDs ranged around 1.9 to 25.9 before. Now 30+ shots holding around 2.1.

My best so far is 0.360″ with this setup with 18.0+ gr JSBs.

323 is not many rounds for a month but windy rainy mini iceage coming on and I’ve been walking a mile or two per day, upgraded my Shoebox compressor to belt drive, etc. I’m happy with it.

Dear uncle hoot, may I suggest getting spectacles. After all Ville’s ears are not exactly small …

I was just watching a mythbusters rerun where they made a candle from ear wax. It didn’t burn, I guess I know why after reading all this. Must have been Toadsuck population they harvested the wax from.

Nothing bad with occasional Binging, you Dick ! :8:

That was during one of those real bad binges.

My retreat from the Fatherland is supposed to be classified information ! I suspect you was the one who placed that 5 Krona in my hand , the one i found when i woke up all dizzy in the Stockholm Harbor, pain in my butt and that damned 5 Kroner in my hand. I remember feeling used and thrown away, you Swine !
How would you ever know about these things otherwise ? And you begged for my forgiveness on the recent Canoe trip, all misty eyed , when you whispered ” iยดm sorry iยดve done wrong “. I thought you meant that spitting in my Ear- inc ident but i quess it was mostly the quilt after the Stockholm incident. :angrymob:
To be honest that 5 Kroner made me rich and famous ; I bought a couple of smoked Herrings with that coin and discovered the Herring Oil business (after i dropped one and slipped on it. Hit my head and ended up in the Swedish Hospital) which has fueled my extreme wealth and greed ever since.
