Q:

How is this smooth edge created ?

In the attached image of a tank adapter I can understand the 4 centerlines (red, green, blue, yellow) needed to turn this piece. What I don’t understand is the purple circled area. How is that shaped so nicely to blend with all the other curved surfaces ?

But you don’t need to cut the ends at an angle, you can leave them straight and save a couple of operations on your machne and you’ve got more options where to put any fittings you might want to use

have a look at this picture and you will see that the part can be made in a 3 jaw chuck and the angles cut using a compund slide then all you have to do is turn the part around and cut the same angle on the other side, there is no need for milling machines and 5 axis CNC stuff

Or first! 😆

Man, my head hurts now… 😀

The ends were probably done last – yes ?

yeah cnc or hand filed i dont know i cant figer it out id have to make it that far to see what works or we need to talk to the maker.

😯 😕

5 axis cnc?

You right though, I can see how everything is done BUT the circled area… The transitions are seamless, it’s got to be cnc’d…

That or a 65 year old aerospace machinist did it the old fashioned way, with 40 years of experience! 😆

If you can make those here in the states you’ll sell quite a few!!!

in carson im like 15 mins from mac 1

I know where in ca. Im in simi

sorry i must be confusing i know most of the work has to be done in the lathe im gust saying to get that flat spot a mill would be easer. cali

How would you be getting the round ends on the mill? When it is machined off center that is how the big radius is made from the round end up on both ends. The other radius is from the piece of round stock it was made from. Then put in mill and both sides were made flat. I’m pretty sure there are pics on here somewhere of how it was made. Where are you located?

y not after its shaped u level and mill down the high spot un till u see what u see in the pic. the lathe is doing the same thing it just vertial insted of horzantal.

yeah iv been trying to make this but it hard with no spec and that y i like my way but i hate using the 4 jaw there so fusterating and they make me mad when i cant get them lind up perfect.that y if something like that needs to be done its mill work becsuse its much easer to level then center lol but hay im only 24 and i can machine weld and biuld with best only a bad craftsman blames his tools. lol

Unless it’s a CNC mill I can’t see it being done on manual mill. Radius are different and it round.

oh sorry i did know. and yes i do

4 jaw comment was for airgunner. Do you know how to use yours? Yellow and red are your centers. I will be making something like this for a reg and I guess I’m going to have to take pic’s of all the steps in the machine and not just the piece.
