Jerry’s slugs

I was out pig hunting this afternoon with a 7 ring slug locked and loaded. I sat in ambush in the jungle up on a hill overlooking the marsh and my corn feeder. I briefly spotted one about five o’clock, but he left quickly and didn’t come back. Maybe he smelled me or my mosquito repellent despite the dead chicken I had hung in a tree on Sunday evening as an attractant and scent cover. I quit at 6 pm, never having gotten off a shot, so I can’t yet tell you how effective the slugs are against pigs. Against wild chickens they’re absolutely lethal, though. On Sunday, I examined the one I hit with a 7 ring slug and found that it had entered the back, traversed at an angle through the chicken, and exited the breast. This was from about 30 yards. I’d never get that kind of lethality with a standard pellet.

So far, my recommendation is to skip the 6 ring, 60 grain slugs and go directly to the 7 ring, 70 grainers. They’re a bit awkward to load but they don’t hurt your thumb like the EJ’s do because the back of the slug is both flat and solid. When my Extreme valve arrives (R & L mailed it on Tuesday), I’ll test out the 9 ringers. Aloha, Norgeiron

My first report on hunting with Jerry’s slugs:
I sat in my tree stand in ambush from 3:30 to 4:30 pm on Sunday but no pigs came around my feeder, so I figured I’d walk over and investigate a new area above the local marsh. Well, I was going through the jungle on a small hill overlooking the marsh, and lo and behold, down below me 35 yards away I spot a flock of wild chickens and a rooster. They spotted me at the same time and started moving into the thick hau by the marsh, but I acquired one in the cross hairs of my scope and fired a 7 ring slug at its back. When that 70 grains of lead hit that chicken, there was a loud, hollow whump sound like hitting a drum, and that bird dropped where it stood. Now I’ve hit lots of wild chickens and roosters with pellets, even .25 Kodiaks, but frequently they run away. Nothing has ever put ’em down like that big slug did. I went down the hill the retrieve the chicken, and i came across a pig trail that runs along the edge of the marsh. From the many hoof prints in the mud, I could tell there were big ones and little ones that use this trail. The light bulb went off in my head: I’ll move my feeder to this spot and ambush ’em from the top of the hill. It it’s a small to medium sized pig, I’ll use the Talondor .25; for big ones, I’ll unleash the Barnette Revolution crossbow. I set the dead chicken up the the hau trees as bait because pigs are attracted to the scent of carrion. I’ll go back next weekend and set up the feeder there and give you guys the report after a week or so. Meanwhile, I can confidently state that these slugs work for hunting. Norgeiron

The Talon valve that came with the TSS was ported and polished by Tony, but I bought a Condor high flow valve so I could get a dramatic increase in fpe. That’s the one that I may have modded for even more air flow and dedicate to pig hunting. I’ll keep the Talon valve and bottle for general use.

Jerry – Do you have a web site or price list or anything like that? I should see the barrel in the next 2-3 weeks.

Yes we cast .308 bullets in several sizes from about 80gr to over 160. The slugs are all custom sized to .308 or .309 or .310 depending on what the customer asks for.

BTW, before you install the barrel, make sure you have a leade cut so that loading is not difficult.

its a TT gun? isnt the valve already worked over? what other mods, do tell…
