2×4’s and deer bodies are different.

Just because someone takes a deer with 3 grains of bulleye, does not make it a deer round. Your game commision has valid reasons for their caliber power limit.

Yes there are people who can kill with these lower energy rounds under ideal conditions, but ideal conditions are not there in the field everyday for every hunter, so game commisions set standards that are humane.

Ask any hunting expert about what you want to use, he will say the same thing I am telling you.

Your quarry deserves better.

Yes Bullet placement is everthing, but in the field there are more variables at work than at your shooting bench.

The idea of using that for Buffalo is preposterous.

By the time I was 12 years old, I had killed close to 40 head of cattle using a 22lr and sometimes a 22 short. I drew an imaginary x from eye to horn and shot where it intersected. Our family at the time raised cattle, sold them on the hoof to beef customers and cut and wrapped the meat.

One shot was all it took, my father trained me well on how to do it and he had done this in the Slaughter houses, but I sure would not go after a Buffalo with a 22, the conditions in the field are a whole lot different, and this is what I am trying to convey to you.

Deer run, there are wind conditions, brush and hunter excitement to deal with. Not to mention, hunter experience.

And please, I am not saying your a bad hunter, it is just the gun and load you are using just does not have much power.

Compare the bullet , a 308, and weight and velocity to a modern cartridge. Then see if you state will allow that modern cartridge, and if they do not, ask yourself why.

The smallest round you can Deer Hunt here with in a Pistol is a 357, magnum.
Back in the 70’s a friend of mine reloaded his own bullets and used 3 grains of Bulls eye equivalent to hunt deer.
That wasn’t any more than a 38 target load.
So it depends on shot placement.
One of my friends killed a deer and while field dressing it he discovered a Broad head in the deer. That deer must have lived a while in agony.
But it goes to show regardless of what you use, if you don’t use it right, you ain’t going to take home the Bacon.:)
That 308 of Randy’s shoots so hard it will ravish a 2X4 as soon as you pull the trigger at 20 to 25 yards. In my experience that gun is all anyone needs in these woods.

Ummmm, I thought Randy sais the gun should be filled to 3600 psi and not 3000-3200. BIg difference

He is currently shooting his personal one at 3800 psi. Sorry if this has already been said. I must have missed it.

Shaggy… have you spoken with Randy about the gun? May want to get his take on it…. I’m sure he’d want to know you are 100% happy with it.

Randy and I have a plan. We’re getting it right.
He’s been a good guy so far nothing that can’t be fixed,
I ordered teh 115 pellets today too, and when we’re done, it’s look out Quackenbush theres a new Beast on teh block. 😀

Good to hear. I’m 100% confident that Randy will make it good.

There is no problem so far, and he knows what is wrong with it, so all will be well.
Any new gun has a little fine tuning in it that will get the squeaks out, but all is ok here and with Mr. Randy.
I been reading the post on Deer hunting on this thread, and I have killed Full grown hogs with a 22 short and a sticking knife 😀
Ive done it for a life time, and bow hunting unless you really do it right will track you to craziness.
But as I was telling rand about the 308 he is putting on the market, that gun has capabilities of taking Range Buffalo at 25 yards IMHO.
That gun will mutilate a hard wood 2X4 dressed of course, and bust it wide open. There isn’t a hogs head out there that hard or Buffalo for that matter.
Any kill depends on shot placement, One Time I was in a tree on a branch and the deer came under me and I shot it with a 2219 arrow 125 grain broad head, it went plum through it and killed it deader than dead, if I might say it like that.
The problem with most people is Buck Fever or for that matter Squirrel fever 😯
The smaller the bullet you use and the better the spot you hit, the better results you’ll have.
In my early days the best meat was killed by a between the eyes hit, Hogs and Deer, and stick them and let the blood come out of them by the heart beet.
Now it takes some know how and if the deer has it’s eyes closed you better stick it fast cause if you don’t it might get up kicking and war is declared on you. 😀
I personally think a 50 caliber is too big to deer hunt with.
My son killed a deer with a 50 caliber I own but he used about half the load and let the deer come in close and killed it deader than 4:00 and never had to track it no where.
It don’t matter what the gun is, it’s the expertise that makes the kill.
That 308 is one beast of a Gun in an air rifle, but it isn’t a hundred yard magic Bullet.
Where I live you have to look straight up to see the sky, those mountains are high, Easy to drag the Deer out 😀 and the furthest shot you need is about 25 to 45 yards so why use a 300 weatherby magnum and blow the whole side out of the deer, when you use the 308 at 800 FPS and that will take out both lungs or the entire heart?
A Deer isn’t that hard to kill. It’s just big and has more room for a vital miss and a week’s tracking 😀

Rob, et al.,

I lived on wild meat for 55 years, and I came from a place where most people did, I have killed probably 2 hundred deer, and about 50 elk, I forget the exact number. I am not trying to brag, whether it was right or wrong it just was.

Most of these 308 air rifles will kill a deer, but do a damn poor job of it, having said that, I know we will hear from some guys that killed “their deer” with their pellet gun in 308 and feel it did just fine.

But you shouldn’t have.

There are far better guns out there, now many of mine were done in with a silenced 22 ruger pistol, I had a good tracking dog, I knew the country and seldon did one get away, when it did it was healthier than I was by the time the trail and I parted ways. But still it wasn’t a whole lot different than “shooting them with the poisen arrow bushman style”, in that you had better be a damn fine tracker and know what wounded game will and will not do.

The important thing is that I was alone except the dog, the deer and my gun that I knew so very well, game was not running scared full of adrenalin like it is during the season, and I was in my backyard, so to speak.

I have shot them with black powder loads in the 45 colt, and it is not a sterling killer either, but it is far better than a 3220 handgun, and that is what a 308 air rifle really is.

Until you start getting to the 38 calibers, which are better but still rather anemic and should be used by experts, you just don’t have enough killing power.

A 45 or a 50 still rule the roost here. Maybe a lot of you disagree, show me your gut piles. I lived in a time and place that I got to make a bunch of them and gained one hell of a lot of experience doing it.

Rob is completely accurate in his assumptions about a 308 pellet gun and deer hnting.

Agreed
just regularly run into the attitude online that if its not a belted magnum its not suitable for taking down a 150 pound grass eating forest rat 😆

Goes back to what I have long pointed out
prior to the Second World War the most common “deer” rifle in the upper midwest was a stinkin’ .22 RF. Even as I youngster I knew pleanty of oldtimers in the Northwoods of MN that persisted in using .25-20 & .32-20 lever guns during Deer season regardless of the law
not alot of difference between a factory load in either of those rounds and a 200 FPE .308 AG
Hell what do ya suppose .32 and .38 rim fire rifles were used for in the day? 😉

I know they’ll do it…. I’m from the mountains here in NC and there are still a lot of folks using a .22RF for deer. Quite common.

I still stand by my statement that I dont think it’s the best alternative for deer sized game. Not saying it couldnt or shouldnt be used… just perhaps not the best choice….

I doubt you will get much over what you are now getting in velocity without major valve mods.
my advice would be to talk to Rich in MI and have him rebuild the valve for big bore HPA
hes pushing a 1000FPS with round balls for a 4 or 5 shot string
still putting my Big Bore QB together
Rich’s custom tapered barrel, breech/bolt mods and big bore PCP valve in a Jack Haley tube dropped in a Richards Microfit thumbhole.
Striker assembly is out of a CO2 tranqulizer dart rifle with a side cocker. Much heavier striker/spring.
Figure once everything is said and done it hopefully should be good for 4 or 5 shots in the 900 FPS range using projis cast from a 110 grain M1 Carbine mold that I am waiting to get back from getting modded to hollow point which should drop weight down well under a 100 grains.
Don’t care for the QB trigger group, might try and adapt a Marauder unit to it.
Too many projects going on at once… 😆

Dont send it to Rich in Mich. He does great work, yes…. but 1000fps with the RB’s in .310 is around 100fpe.

I didnt catch what size bullet Shaggy is using, but the Corsair will produce over 200fpe with the heavy bullets….

So I’d recheck chrony numbers and if you are not getting numbers up to spec, let Randy know. No need to send this off to someone else.

Here are some numbers posted with a 3000psi fill and various bullet weights on the Corsair….

55 gr – 1040, 1104, 1096, 1051, 964 – 5 shots Highest power shot gave 148 fpe

68 gr – 969, 1037, 1036, 987, 876 – 5 shots Highest power shot gave 162 fpe

120 gr – 821, 869, 835, 779 – 4 shots Highest power shot gave 201 fpe

162 gr – 658, 766, 778, 733 – 4 shots Highest power shot gave 217 fpe

I checked the 125 grain pellets I received and according to my scale they are 131 grain pellets.
I checked it with all my precision pellets I have diabolo exact andeven RWS Kodiak ect. and they are all within the 1/2 scale such as the 14.5 will read 14 and some will read 15 according to the side they favor, I checked the 4325 caliber and the 28.5 grain 22 caliber and the scales was on the money, so I put the 125’s I received with the Gun and they read 131 a couple read 130, being maybe they might be 130 and a half, but for sure not one is 125. So that might be the difference in the chrono readings.

I fund something that might be the low shot count on the fills.
I can push a pellet either end in the top of the barrel and pull it out.
The front is smaller than the back. and the groves are not uniform.
So here is the back of the pellet to the front of the pellet, each grove and each pellet size going from front to back.,,Notice the groves aren’t uniform either.
Back-.309 first grove from back .277 to .281 second shoulder 309 second grove .275 to .277 third shoulder .309 third grove .279 to .280 fourth Shoulder .309 fourth Grove .253 the end of the bullet on the highest shoulder .303 . Any comments or suggestions, and where can I find some real good pellets? or is this normal?
Reason I’m asking is that I can see air through my scope speeding towards the target, so I’m loosing air around the gas checks IMO. And blowing a lot of air that I’m not getting use out of, and Maybe the pellets are too soft. Reason I’m thinking this is because that much air in a 28 inch barrel in a closed space with no leakage should propel that pellet in the high 800’s to the mid 900’s IMO. OK you guys Help! 😛
I measure a 22 caliber pellet 28 grain, and the gas checks are uniform and it is a .228 pellet. I measure a 25 caliber pellet and it is a .258 Eun Jin 43 grain and the gas checks are uniform. I measure the 308 and get a .309 and the gas checks are not uniform and neither is the front end. This lost me. Someone on here has some 308 pellets micro some of them and put them on here. And include gas checks if you have them made with gas checks. Thanks. 😆

I checked the Chrony Numbers again and got about the same thing. So 610 and low 542 is about all it is going to do. I’m using the 125 grainThey sell on Advenutres in airguns, thats what was sent to me. The picture is 25 yards,3 shots is all your goingt o get and be any good.
I’d say the 4’th would be in the low 400’ds.
