Q:

New R3 .25…..damaged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I literally received my R3 .25 just 5 minutes ago from UPS, but there’s some very serious problems.

1. The case zipper is completely cut through on each side.

2. But, wait a minute. Holy cow!!!! The walnut stock is completely cracked. If I pull on it with the sightless effort, I’m sure that whole piece would fall off.

I can understand damage can occur during transport, but there’s no visible damage to the containing box. I can’t believe I waited 9 months and paid $2050.00 for this.

Tony – I sent you a mail. Please advise.
James

Tony and Ed are both regarded with the highest integrity, so I have no intentions what’s so ever to find any fault with them.

In the meantime, i did a little research regarding the process of filing a claim with UPS.

Here goes:

1). You file a claim
2). UPS picks up item to “inspect”
3.) UPS returns item to shipper, with whom claim must be settled. (Of course, now shipper has your money AND the product AND the risk of further damage is more likely)
4.) UPS denies claim because they will claim the packaging was insufficient.
5.) Shipper most likely refuses to believe decision, appeals.
6.) Six months pass, shipper refuses to refund your money. Not to imply this would happen with Tony.
8.) You are now essentially screwed, and at the seller’s mercy. No rifle, no money, just pellets lying around not being used.
9.) You kick yourself in the ass for agreeing to get involved in the UPS “claim” process in the first place. Nevertheless, due to my lack of options – I still filed.

What a nightmare.

Samurai I feel you but in this case I don’t think its Tony fault. Its has to be the shipping.I also recieve two R3 yesterday and one box seem like it was open.I got luck out nothing happen to my twin only a scatch on the bag.But then again sorry to hear what happen to yours.

Best Regards
Chewy

I second the seals or anti tapper! after all this is ups and what’s to say they didn’t replace the box and shipping label after some fool broke the zipper and that beautiful work of art fell to the floor and cracked the stock….
could be this isn’t the first thing this inspector had damaged, and he is just trying to save his job…. some seals or anti tamper tape that we all have seen pics of online will defer this type of actions.

one thing I will suggest to Ed and Tony that will cost very little is to begin using either a couple proprietary seals or anti tamper tape as it makes parcel invasion a great deal easier for the end user to check and document with a cam before ever opening the parcel.

I know of a few FFLs that use UPS that have gone this route due to the brown playing package god

the packaging with my new Edgun in my opinion was sufficient
it doesn’t matter how well you pack an item if they tear it all open

I’m fine with the packaging as it is. I’ve received two EDgun both in good shape. Both guns were inside the padded case and inside the box surrounded by foam peanuts. The 40x18x8 box that it came in was not loosely packed but were crammed with peanuts. This seemed adequate to me. I could see where there could be issues if the padded case were to break open, but that would be a real stretch to think that it would.

Someone probably opened the box, cut the friggin case, and accidentally let the gun drop out of it. Did it have a double strand of shipping tape on the outside of the box? Tony used one pass of shipping tape on both of my boxes. This would give you some idea if it was opened, or do you see any torn surface area where it looks like the original tape was torn off it and replaced with new shipping tape to make it seem as if it hadnt been tampered with?

My FX 400 came all the way from Sweden with two foam pads pressed together to hold the gun. Any bump would have pushed it to the side where it could have been damaged if dropped without outward damage.

I guess Tony could double box them but it would cost you more that $50 to ship it.

quote Mike:

Hoot, as to your question whether it was double boxed? I can’t answer for Samurai but mine was not. I was amazed that my edgun arrived ok after seeing how it was packaged. My edgun arrived in the soft gun case which was inside a cardboard box that I thought was rather flimsy and packed loosely with foam peanuts. Not the idea packaging. How ever in saying this I haven’t heard of it being a problem with anyone else other than Samurai. If in the future there are more claims I’m sure Tony will beef up his end of the shipping or at least I hope so. With that being said we all know how hard the brown gorilla can be on shipping items. My heart goes out to Samurai – wish I had a stock to loan him.

Sounds like packing has not improved over the years. My first one arrived safe and sound as it seems the vast majority have. I was a little surprised at the size of the box and loose foam peanuts… But I’m stopping there as my new one will be here in a couple of hours.

Looking at the OP’s pics… that stock damge, given the grain pattern there, would not have taken much force to accomplish, but it would have had to been enough to move the stock vs the action. I can totally see that happening without any visible damage to the box.

Will report back when I get to fondle mine this afternoon.

What I’ve seen on the pictures is defenetly shipping companies fault.

First — the back of the stock. It can happen if the parcel is thrown to the floor by the end of the parcel. The gun is micro move in the stock and that impact is enough to damage the stock.

Second — the zip. I really doubt that Tony would send it this way, really doubt, most likely someone at the shipping company opened the box to check it out, maybe after x-ray test or what ever. I got something like that once when the gun arrived to South Africa the case was cut by knife or something like that while being checked by the customs.

Ed

PS. The box without a damgae doesn’t explain you anything, they took it out of the box, if they managed to destroy zip and most likely just put the case with the gun hard against the hard surface, floor, for example, before packing it again. So no damage to the box, but shit inside.

Thanks for your support gentlemen. This is so frustrating cause I know any allegations or fault to UPS is undoubtedly a long process and most likely futile.

I added a new link to the pictures in the original posting in case anyone is interested.

Zocoloco – the gun is marked “Made in Russia”.

@ Samurai: You have my sympathy ! If that had happened to me, – I don’t know what I would have done…..

Out of curiosity: Is your gun marked “Made in Estonia” or does it state Russia, – and what is the serial number ?

Reason for asking is because some of these guns have been travelling quite a lot before reaching the US, – and initial (but invisible) damage to the stock may have happened before reaching the US….

Please put up your pictures again, – your link does not work without a password/login information……… 😉

samuria998,

You want some advise…be it a smidgen devious.

Climb your roof, drop that box, smash up the end a little.

UPS, will FWY on this claim. If there is no VISABLE damage they WILL deny the claim.

We KNOW Tony did not ship it like that, he said so, so UPS DROPPED IT!

If they FWY, send me an email, I will find the phone to national.
If You call national, heads roll…things get taken care of.

when you get on the roof to drop the box be sure the edgun is on the ground and not in the box. hehe

I loathe and dispise UPS
let me share a little story
a number of years back I sent out an ancestrial Koto period Katana blade for a full polish by a master on the west coast
months later when it came back to me it was covered with a series of rusty fingerprints
some Jackass at UPS had opened the box and fondled my blade up with their sweaty dumbfuck hands
UPS Of COURSE Denied this and refused to honor the insurance claim

while there are many wonderful folks that work within the company there are complete evil trash as well and a great number of useful idiots who think they are law enforcement
When we were still heavy into the firearms business we began noting delayed shipping through one of the hubs. Come to find out from one of the UPS folks that we shot with and worked there that the hub manager was opening everything coming or going to us! Confronted the little prick who stated he had the right and authority to inspect the contents for contraband items
WTF? We were Federally Licensed importers at the time!
that was when I quit giving that company any of my money if I could help it
Bear in mind UPS played major roles in the lead up to Ruby Ridge and Waco

as far as the broken stock…I really doubt Tony would have shipped it or the damaged case that way
look carefully at the box for extra tape is all I am saying

stocks can be damaged inside a box without any external signs
seen it happen
if the stock is firmly packed and the box dropped flat the mass of the action can twist and shatter the wood
it is why I discourage folks from shipping in hard cases and ideally have them remove the stock and pack it as an individual item
but with the case messed up as well I tend to lean toward some buffoon tearing into the box.

if you elect to have the stock repaired Doug Phillips is your go to man…he is a miracle worker with broken stocks and is reasonable on his rates.

on the lighter side my R3 long .25 arrived today and a lovely piece of art it is!

quote ttik2k:

Sorry to hear about your stock. I’d have to agree with most people here, UPS is probably to blame on this. I’ve worked for UPS and I’m suprised most packages make it to their destination in one piece. I’d be happy to buy that broken stock from you if you decide to sell it, maybe that will make it a bit easier for you to get a replacement. Let me know if you decide to sell it , my email is ttik2k@Yahoo dot com
Good luck

A broken hardwood stock can be repaired and it won’t show, and it will last.

My experience with this was a dining room set that got trashed by the movers, cracks, splits, outright breakage, and I thought it was all lost.

However, a good woodsmith made it impossible to even see where the problems were. It’s been over 25 years now and the repair is still as good as the day we got it.

Give some consideration to ttik2k’s offer, and see if Tony will sell you a replacement for a decent price.

Can the zipper be sewn or is it ruined?

No one can see the pictures. Move them over to Photobucket.com

By the way, was the gun double boxed?

Regards,

Hoot
