Quick session with the cricket
This morning I went out for a quick paper punching session before the harsh South African sun gets high in sky.
I filled my Kalibrgun Cricket .25 to 220bar, cleaned the barrel with surgical spirits and got ready to send some lead.
The wind was quite strong blowing about 12-16km/h. I used shooting bags in the prone position. Not the most comfortable way, but it is stable and that matters most.
I shot three, 5 shot groups at 50m. All with JSB king 25gr straight out of the tin. I dont hunt much further than this, becuse I rarely have a stable platform. I mostly hunt out of the seated position, out of hand, or off some homemade shooting sticks.
The wind varied quite a bit, but I kept the same POA the whole time. Unforunatly I pulled one of the shots, but otherwise I am pretty happy with these 3 groups.
I would like to see what kind of groups you guys are getting.

I know that last post was off topic, I just had to get it off my chest.
About the targets.
Size of paper: A4?
Amount of targets: Like Sir Ville said, to really test shooter and gun you have to shoot 10 consecutive groups. So lets do 10 targets with 2 sighter targets. (Or 20 targets with 4 sighter targets)
Size of targets: You guys are the pros concerning target size for optimal groups. (Lets do 25m targets and 50m targets…dont know if that is nessasary??)
I can try to make the targets, but my work wont be worthy :rofl:
How terrible. Just got back from squirrel hunting (I got 4 of them) only to find a bloody robber inside my house. Ran out of the room like a sissy, grabbed my cricket that was right around the corner and held the guy at gunpoint until the security and police arrived. He only had a sharpend screwdriver on him, but that thing can still do damage.
Oh yeah, there are sites for that, we should totally have our own “custom made” TAG challenge targets, anyone up to the task? :whistle:
That is why I posted 3 groups and not just one… so I can realistically see what I can do. Like you can see the last group opened up a lot. I lost the focus needed.
I am going grey squirrel hunting tomorrow morning, but will try some more 5 shot groups soon :biggrinn:

Yah, give yourself and your gun sometime it’ll get better.
Target shooting will help you know how well your gun is shooting at what ever range, you’ll know the group size and that should allow you an insight of how much of a kill zone you have for the size of game chosen.

I just dont feel that comfortable hunting that far. I shot some 120m groups a few months back, but after seeing the groups I am not taking the chance with a animal’s life.
I think this was 2 full mags (24 shots) I missed the target completely a few time due to canting the rifle. I have a bubble level now
For my Cricket 22 std we usually pest from 30 – 80 yards, and only beyond that if the conditions/weather is very good.
I don’t like to have to run 100+ yards to put something out of it misery if I don’t have to, shit can happen and it usually does when there’s to may variables to contend with.
Target shooting on the other hand I usually do when I’m testing/breaking-in a gun and testing different pellet lots that we have and trade with my friends.
Shooting out to about 280 yards, but I really need to be in a different frame of mine to be shooting 100+ yards and on a good day helps.

That’s a different pellet batch/lot, maybe it’s a bit heavier or has a slightly different head size ?
The 14 shots are centered in the group and about he same size as the rest.
On the first 2 targets are from the same purchase but from 2 different tins, I suspect that it contends 2 different mixed lots ?
I just rebuilt the reg so I’m back to paper punching for a wail, I’m hopeing it tightens up even better as it seats in.
That’s when a full mag looks like it’s only a 3 shot group. :biggrinn:

Sir Ville that TAG target is a great idea. we should do it with 25m and 50m so we can accommodate the guys with smaller shooting spaces.

The only way to know how your gun really shoots is to have it in a special vise (not your normal work bench vise but a gun specific , damped one) since one day you shoot better than the other,winds are favorable – or not, the neighbours Cats Health concerns you or Uncle :hoot: put a spell on your trigger finger (the one he´d rather have up in his ass) that´s now twitching.
The Gun – any Gun – more often than not outshoots the owner. Once you learn to know your Gun, how to hold it, what ammo it likes, what cleaning regim (the window of accuracy = when cleaned untill it Groups again till when it starts to spread) , if it shoots well from ie Bipod or it prefers bags etc, etc then, and only then you can say “the gun doesn´t shoot, it shoots like shit, something´s wrong” and so on.
That equation , of course , excludes Hatsans and other POS magic sticks but holds true to any good gun.
That´s why ie the BR comps are done with so many shots.
+1 on the TAG target. A 50m target thread would be very nice to have, I would gladly see what my gun can do when shooting a full magazine at that distance, gives you a better idea of the true accuracy and shows people what the shooter can do with the gun (because the gun probably outshoots the shooter)
The REAL challenge to any gun – and shooter – is to put together 10 consecutive 5 shot targets in a row. Every Bozo can muster a good group every now and then , myself included . Five shots is the norm. 10 shots hide the spread since every good quality gun is able to a seemfully good grouping. Why do you people think ie Anschütz , and many other makers , show test targets with five shots ?
Here’s two factory targets shot with my Vulcan. One 5 shotter and one full mag with 11 shots :
The range is only 30m but anyway. That’s the way to do it ( factory targets ) “money for nothing and Chicks for free”.
When the weather gets normal we should make our own specific TAG target and have a online competition.
This isn’t 50m but close enough……
Yes Mike I do teach CCW here in Ohio. I’ve been an NRA Certified Instructor for 44 years. We just lowered the hours required for the class from 12 hours to 8 hours.
