Ranger 45
Well I have a tracking number for the Ranger 45 that was assembled, test fired, chronyed, and shipped today.
28 inch barrel, standard stock and black crerakote finish, $1230 dollars including shipping.
To early to get the arrival date, it is not in the system yet.
Chrony numbers were:
Round ball. low setting 3000 PSI……1018 FPS
225………. low setting 3000 PSI……..877 FPS
405 shot 1 hi setting 4500 PSI………804 FPS
340 shot 2 hi setting 4500 PSI………843 FPS
These numbers will improve by 30 to 50 FPS as the rifle breaks in.

1 more shot would have been fine or 3 more would have been fine also, it just changes the basis of comparison. 2 shots untethered for a gun set to deliver 2 consistent shots is a valid group. A gun set to max one shot power ought to be judged on how well it can deliver that one shot. A gun set for two similar shots ought to be able to do something close to your picture. A gun set for 3 shots is only set for 3 if it can deliver a 3 shot group…
Some folks get bent double screaming about only 5 shot groups count or you really need ten shots etc. and they totally miss the point of accurate shooting. I’m fairly confident that you’re not going to put a group in an Elk! If you shoot twice, it’s because you screwed up the first shot or the Elk moved, a twig got in the way…. The point is that if you need to take a second shot, it will be just as important to be able to place it as the first attempt. It is highly unlikely that you’ll be needing to or have the opportunity to take a 3rd, 4th and 5th shot. I expect you’ll have the chance to refill the gun if 3-5 are required!
I’ve shot an assload of “trophy” groups from 3 to 30 shots but the only thing I know for sure is that someone will always have a reason to second guess no matter how good any particular group is! At this point, I’m convinced that the best “group” is a single shot that lands where the shooter called it, before the shot.
I had to resight my Ranger 45 in after sighting in for RB.
First shot was on the edge of the paper high right.
Second shot was lower but still to the right.
I over corrected the next shot and was a little to the left.
With a 4000 PSI fill, the corrected shot was right in there, so I fired another shot to see what a two shot untethered group would do.
Would you guys have fired another one or three shots for a 3 or 5 shot group?

The first barrel I had on my Sharps Borschardt was a 1-22 Douglas, I shot 430’s to 500’s routinely at 1100 to 1300 FPS.

That probably has more to do with the airgun and its components rather than the projectile. EXAMPLE: Taking bullets out of the equation…a HORNADY or SPEER roundball was designed for muzzleloaders and muskets with varying twist rates from 1-24 up to 1-48″ twist, and velocities from 1200-1800+ FPS depending on caliber and black powder charge.
I think these barrels are what?…………1-22″ twist rate? That might explain why airgun slugs like velocities at around 800-1000 fps. But, you are doing it right anyways, you try a new projectile and you shoot it to what it likes cause even though a given twist rate is supplied, the actual twist rate varies from barrel to barrel slightly.
But our airgun speeds are still safe for the design of the projectile with room to spare. IMO!
DAN, Don’t forget, You and Me and RC and Marv and Butcher are no longer shooting PELLETS. These are BULLETS designed for Powderburners. A 45-70 or 454 casull or muzzle loader is gonna push any of our bullets way faster than our HPA guns can and push them waaaay above the sound barrier. I don’t see an issue with the speeds we are getting. Especially with the 350-500 gr bullets.
OK ….i did find out when the gun was tethered up that at cirtain pressures , round ball ,and a few bullets shot better as the pressure and speed went down , the laser cast shot better at around 2500psi low power – 850 fps , of coures this is and effect while shooting with, and air gun .
There are shooters pushing lead over 2700 fps with out gas checks with powder . And to my surprise the grooves that we still have on our bullets will actually help stabilize the bullet at super sonic speeds . I did not believe this either but it is a fact . Bombs at one point had fins to guide them . Then they became bigger heavier and faster , Fins did not work so they put ridges on them and took the fins off . That stabilized them . The Nitro .46 that took down the first tree is not as powerful as your Ranger but is pretty damn stout. 100 yards on game is no longer a power issue for these guns, it is purely a matter of getting the shot and being skillful enough to execute it. Now, it’s the hunter, not the gun.
BTW, I’m glad the 340 did well, I hope the Casull does even better.

Thanks to you ,and Charlie for letting me test those out , those shot like a dam rocket out of my gun at the 950-1000 fps range , that sucker has killing range way out there for and airgun , 100 yard kills on big game for sure , in my opinion , that is why i had the casull accurate mold made up , that flat nose is a real SHOCKER ! 😯 on the casull blasting through 5 layers of 3/4 plywwod 😯 then sticking the length of the bullet into a half round .
this gun has even more potential for high power setting shooting on 4500 psi , i was talking with Dan Mcvey about it , we might just have to get a 4500 psi dedicated hammer spring to improve the high power 340-540 grain bullet shooting range , the current spring has to much valve lock at 4500 psi , at 4200 psi it shoots killer , the sping that is in the gun now is a great set up for low med high power it has great balance shooting all 3 power power levels really good .
one thing -i think we have to keep in mind is not shooting to high of speed for the bullet design , there may become a point of over shooting the design on some of these bullets , but testing well tell the story .
Thanks RC. Looks like the .452s arer the best choice and the .4535s are a good choice if one gets a barrel that seems to run a little big. That happens some times…

They were the first bullets I shot in the thread on your 45 caliber bullets.

They shot stellar groups at around 500 FPE. Knowing the undersized ones did not like my bore and that the 453 would still work, I sent the rest to Dan when I got the idea that you felt I had found the right size for my bore.
Dan like the 345 so much he bought a mold that duplicates it.
I think for someone that does not cast, the raptors and the Deltas would make a fine choice for deer and Black bear in the case of the Raptors and Elk with the Deltas.
Dan found that the 452’s worked best in his rilfe also.
I still ahve some of the Raptors that I am saving for special occaisons. 😎

Did you see my last post? I was hoping to get some feedback regarding deltas between the .452 and .4535 in particular. Accuracy as well as ease of loading etc…

That is a nice storage box.
You do not need a lot of 416’s, and at 16 or 17 to the pound they suck up lead fast.
The 340’s will probably shoot well and maybe a good mid power bullet.
I shot the RB’s on mid this moring, nothing spectacular to report, 5 shots into 1 3/4 inch, cast of pure lead, 3000 PSI fill, but the bad news is that they shot 15 inches high at 50 yards with the same zero for 416’s at 100 yards and RB on low at 100 yards.
So I dialed back to the original sight setting and will just shoot the RB at low pressure, get more shots and still have a fine plinking load.

Your right, every sport and every rifle has different demands and uses.
With my 45/100 Sharps Borschardt and my 45/100 Shilo #1 Sporting Rifle, I shot 10 shot groups.
The matches I shot in, I shot 2 foulers and 10 shots for score at 400 yards, 600 yards, 900 yards and 1000 yards. We cleaned between every distance, the two foulers were sighters and since we were using black powder, we needed to foul the bore, for a shot from a clean bore went high. The ten shot groups were not only a test of our rifle and ammunition, but a test of our bullet lube softening the black powder fouling.
So ten shots was an indicator of a match stage shot count.
A big game rifle is usually shot for 3 shot groups, because in the field hunting big game, that is a typical shot string.
Varmit rilfes where you set and shoot are shot in 5 shot groups, because shooting rodents involves more shots.
With my Ranger 45, where I fill to either 4000 or 4500 PSI fills, I get two and three shots respectively, so yes, that is an accurate account of what to expect.
Shooting tethered is a good indicator of your rifle and ammo quality and the compatibility of the two, but for real field hunting situations it just gives a few indicators, two shot or three shot groups give atrue indication of the effectiveness of your tune.
Can you just imagine, shooting two shots at an elk and missing, and having it stand and look at you while you dismount your backpack, pull out your Pygmee or Guppy bottle attach it and fill, then disconnect the bottle, reload and fire two more shots.
On second thought that should be stage one at a timed practical big bore air rifle match. 💡

My range, 50 and 100 yard targets.
